Should I drop Skinning and pick up leatherworking?Follow

#1 Apr 21 2008 at 10:13 AM Rating: Decent
I have a level 41 Troll Hunter with skinning(296) and mining(261) as my two main professions.

As you can see I almost have my skinning maxed out and mining needs a little work but it shouldn't be to difficult for me to accomplish.

I would realy like to keep Mining as it is making me mad amounts of gold, it helped the most in buying my mount, and I can use this toon to help bankroll my alts allowing them to take up other proffesions that could aid my main and guild. Skinning helps suppliment my income but not so much that it'll be missed.

My question is would it be a good move to drop skinning and take up leather working?

If you must switch, you would be much better off with a new profession that complements the one that you're keeping. For example, blacksmithing, engineering, and jewelcrafting all go very well with mining. If you prefer, you could also drop mining and go with leatherworking.

While some people can make a rational decision at end-game to switch their main character to two crafting professions, it's generally a terrible idea for anyone to do that sooner. In all honesty, the best advice is for you to continue what you've been doing so well thus far. Get both gathering professions to 375/375, fund your epic flying mount and then buy mounts for all your alts. There's little that you need from a crafting profession that you can't get in exchange for cash (which you'll have in abundance!).

I agree with Hoyadin. If you feel you must change, you would be better served by picking up a crafting profession that complements the gathering profession you keep. In reality, you're probably better off keeping both gathering professions. Crafting professions are costly and time consuming to level. You'll probably find all that mad gold you're making is being eaten up trying to level your new craft.

First, why do you want LW?

I don't ask to be snarky. Instead, my answer somewhat depends on why you want LW.

If it's to make money, then don't bother really. LW isn't very good money compared to some other professions.

Alternatively, you'd take it to make yourself gear. I'd say LW craftable items are decent but nothing like must-haves.

Either way, if you're taking LW, then I'd say having skinning is necessary. Otherwise, you'll have to buy mats to level it and you'll have to buy mats for the duration for anything you want to craft. Unless you're rolling in money, that can get expensive.

If you're willing to buy skins to level and want some of the crafted items, then maybe take up LW. But, if you're looking to make money off LW, don't bother.

Overall, though, my opinion is no, don't drop skinning for LW.

edit for typo

The reason I was considering it was so that I can get some of the Tough Scorpid armor that seems as though it would compliment my armor best at the current level (silly I know), but i was also looking at armor for future use.

After browsing some of the other posts, it seems more sensible to farm the mats for the tough scorpid armor that I want and ask around in the capitals in-game if someone is high enough in LW to craft it for me.

Thank you all for your advice, it makes more sense to continue to use both professions that I have now to save money for the higher level mounts and buy my armor at the AH as I've been doing.

Once you start getting thick and rugged leather by the boatload, skinning will also net you more gold. You're right near the level where it becomes very profitable. Rugged leather is selling for a gold a piece on my server now (thats 20g per stack).

keep both. that way you can save enough gold for your mounts and other upgrades.

crafting professions are only meant for items you can equip but with instance drops and pvp rewards etc., you can replace your crafted items.

to be honest, LW hasn't been all that useful for my hunter. (I have skinning and LW.) the riding crop and armor kits are the only things i make and use with regularity.

it seems you get more mileage with blacksmithing or engineering.

LW has been great for me. Not terribly hard to level and lends quite usable armor to your leveling travails. Additionally, I've been able to make a decent chunk of gold from selling certain of the items that I've crafted as a part of normal skillups. Rogues, hunters, and ferals love all the Nightscape, Wicked, and Thick Draenic gear. That said, I don't know that at level 70 LW's worth is equal to, for example, Tailoring to a priest/mage/lock.

My understanding is that the best thing about LW at 70 are the drums, which I'm actually quite looking forward to. Actually, leg armor kits (clefthide, nethercleft, etc) are a nice bonus as well, though they are BoE and you don't have to be an LW to apply these to the armor.

Drums of Battle = Only reason needed to level Leathorworking, armor kits are an added bonus.

Blacksmithing sucks, sorry, someone had to say it

I am going to say keep mining, drop skinning, and pick up engineering. Not only will you have more fun with it, but it will make you money once you get it high enough.
