A little disappointed by engineering @ level 24...Follow

This is sort of a rant, but more tradeskill oriented than general, hence why it's here.

I powerleveled my engineering on my new priest, who is now 24, while waiting for my friends to catch up to me in levels so we can run instances. Now, prices on my server are a lot higher than the last time I leveled engineering (pre-TBC), so I was surprised to find myself paying 4 gold per jade and 2.5g per citrine, etc. Iron would go from 4g a stack (which was a steal!) to the more common 10g a stack.

Anyway, my plan was to level my engineering up to 215 to make the Gnomish Goggles. I checked Allakhazam's engineering page on it, and saw it didn't require any gnomish training, which was great, because I planned on going Goblin this time around. So I got to 210, made the prerequisite fire goggles (+17 FR), then burned 10 gold getting the next 4 levels (making mithril bullets... ugh... mithril is very pricy). Then I looked around for the recipe for the Gnomish Goggles. Went to the trainer (who is, coincidentally, the gnomish trainer), and guess what?

The trainer won't teach you any recipes until 30.

Sigh...

So I looked around for my level, seeing what fun stuff I could make. I settled on the Gnomish Cloaking Device, which although useless due to various details, is at least a trinket in a slow that would remain empty until my mid-30s. I also wanted to make a Mechanical Dragonling, but it requires level 30. Doh! The Gnomish Net-o-Matic Project is unfortunately also taught by the gnomish engineering trainer, and thus requires level 30. Gnomish Rocket Boots? Same problem; need to be 30.

It's just a little disheartening that all these fun items, which I have the skill to use (and all of them have drawbacks), I can't use until I get more levels... even though they aren't technically level specific. Sure, other crafts require levels on their items as well, but part of the fun of engineering is that inherent risk: you can use the stuff early on for fun effects... but some of the time it doesn't go how you want.

At least once I hit 30 I'll have a ton of stuff waiting for me, huh? :-P

/rant off.

Two things:

1. Yes, I have checked the AH; I realize the Net-o-Matic is BoE and I could buy it is if was for sale. No dice so far. Same with the rocket boots, although, yes, I need 10 more skill to get them.

2. The Gnomish Cloaking Device is worthless except in one scenario I can think of. That scenario is if you got jumped on a PvP server out of combat. Fire up the cloaking device and run like hell (or hearth). I play PvE, so this scenario most likely will never happen to me (outside of BGs). The device has an hour cooldown (ouch...). It provides invisiblity, which is nice because NO ONE without detect invisibility can see you, but which bites because you can't see anyone either (ie, no getting the drop on people). Finally, if you're in combat, you will stay in combat and keep getting hit by the (now invisible) enemies. Furthermore, if you were jumped on a PvP server while in combat, your opponent simply needs to follow the mob as it follows you.

As I said, pretty worthless. But it's still fun to disappear in front of your friends for 10 seconds every hour :-P

I still use the Gnomish Cloaking Device in battlegrounds at level 70. Can't think of many items you craft at that level and still use in endgame. Swiftness and free action potions are still used, I guess.

Anyway, you'll feel better when you're wearing a Green Lens of Shadow Wrath and a Death Ray at 35, Power Amplification Goggles and a pair of +45 stamina trinkets at 50, and your T5-equivalent metagemmed Powerheal Lens or Hologoggles at 63.

Also note that Rocket Boots Xtreme Lite + Levitation can get you some very interesting places in an awful hurry.

Get a Gnomish Shrink Ray (BOE) to console yourself in the meantime. And when possible make grenades, not bullets. More expensive, but much more useful and fun.

Edited to explain: The cloaking device is useful for covert movement. For example, use it to slip into the flagroom in WSG, or to get past the enemy chokepoint in AV. Also great for mount + levitate blitzkriegs from the BS to the stabs or farm.

And don't forget the best reason of all to take Engineering: The Zapthrottle Mote Extractor !
http://thottbot.com/i23821 (sorry, I don't know how to link stuff properly).

I easily get a Primal Air per loop of Nagrand, and after a few times around, you get a pretty good idea of where they will spawn. Netherstorm, Shadowmoon, and Zangarmarsh don't seem to be as reliable, but if you keep your goggles on while questing, they pop up often enough to make it worthwhile.

Admittedly, you do have to get to 305 skill first, but this gadget alone will pay for everything you spent on Engineering.

Oops...here's the Alla link, my apologies for the other one : http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=23888

Awesome, awesome post. The shrink ray is definitely a good thing to keep an eye out for, and putting it into perspective by seeing all the goodies I'll get in the future warms my heart. Thank you very much :)

(And looking up the rocket boots + levitation is AWESOME on youtube, lol).

Errrrr, that's all fine and dandy... except that I'm, you know, level 24. There's no way a mote extractor is going to help me any time soon, lol. Especially since I'm waiting for my friends to level with me... and they're all newbies.

I like the Green Lens of Fiery Wrath, the Deepdive Helmet, the Power Amplification Googles, the Gyrocopter, and yes, the mote extractor. There is so much to love about engineering!

Run Gnomergan to get the discombobulator ray plans. Turning the PvP opposition into leperous gnomes with a big stat nerf is tons of fun. You can get lucky with a Thermaplugg drop as shown in that link. However there's another way to get the plans. Roughly once a run in Gnomergan, a security delta access card drops. Its BOE. Have whomever picked it up, pass it to the engineers in your party. Only engineers can use that card get the discombobulator plans from 'terminal D', deep in Gnomer. The delta card also allows you to get the minor recombobulator plans from 'terminal B', though these plans aren't very useful and can also be bought these days. Delta cards can sometimes be found for sale in the auction house also. I typically see them for 1 G.

Yeah, sorry Locke, I got a bit ahead of the curve there. It's always that way when I start thinking about the Extractor. Now...let me tell you about this Flying Machine thingie...
