Where is my fish finderFollow

#1 Jul 27 2008 at 7:35 PM Rating: Decent
I have leveled fishing a couple of times in the past and always managed to fish up the fish finder scroll. Now on my alliance char I am level 275 and still haven't seen the scroll pop up. Is there a certain place that you need to fish? both my other fisherman were Horde so maybe i'm just in a different place. Any help would be appreciated.

Even with 2 years in game and a couple 70s, I have only seen the book come up twice. I got it out in the Barrens area on my main character and one other time I saw it fished up in STV. I think it's a pretty random thing bud.

The scroll seems to be a fully random drop , twice it dropped for me in the pools along from Ratchet , one while fishing for deviate fish and i know others have had it from pools all over the place and at all levels from what i can tell , i seem to remember i got one in outland from a pool as well but not sure if my memory is correct on that.As i have many characters most have eventually found it , the only thing i can suggest is invest a little time fishing schools of fish and the floating debris which there are many of .

I have fished with 5-6 characters and all have gotten the Weather-Beaten Journal before they were skill 225. You need to fish pools, which I do almost exclusively, to get the most trunks and crates. According to El's Extreme Anglin' at http://www.elsanglin.com Curious Crates have the best catch rate. These crates are found in the Outland.

I have gotten almost all my journals by fishing the pools in Hillsbrad (in the river by Southshore and Tauren Mills). These pools produce a lot of watertight trunks.

Every person I know who's gotten the book says it came from a pool of debris (the only exception is one like Prikker who got it from the fishing daily). I've never heard anyone fish one up from an ordinary school of fish.

Zangarmarsh is among the best places to farm for it, since you'll have the best return on your time from normal fishing before the book drops. Just keep working the pools of "Steam Pump Debris" that spawn along the edges of the lakes. If the mobs are too dangerous for your current level, then the pools along the coast of Tanaris would likely be the next best alternative.

You may be right about this. I never thought about the type of pool from which the trunk/crate came. I generally fish pools for 30 min or so then open all the trunks when I'm done, rather then open the trunks as I get them.

No, I'm sure you're right: if you can manage to get a box/crate/trunk/whatever from a fishing pool, it no doubt has the same chance of containing a fish-finding book. You would just need to go through quite a few schools of fish relative to the number of debris pools before finding the lucky crate.

Got mine from a crate from floating wreckage out in Feralas on the beach.

I've gotten one out of a trunk fishing sagefish pools in Hillsbrad.... Think I got my other one in Loch Modan, but can't remember if it was out of a pool of fish or debris... and I've gotten several from the daily, but didn't need it anymore by then--lol.

Anyway... the point? They do fish out of pools of fish, not just debris.

The Weather Beaten Journal only comes from crates or trunks (or, in the reward from the fishing daily. You can catch the crates and trunks in any of the standard fish pools, but at a pretty low frequency (something like 4-5%). The highest rate of catch for trunks and crates is from the floating wreckage pools and the like (e.g., Steam Pump Flotsam). If you want/need a Journal quickly, you're much better off fishing the wreckage pools. Looking at El's Extreme Anglin', the best bet is Old World wreckage pools, where the trunks drop at 60%. In contrast, drop rates of crates in Outland Steam Pump Flotsam is only 30%.

My druid (who was 375 when the book came out) got his from a box that he caught in floating debris/wreckage.

My lock (skill unknown - greater then 300 though) got his as part of his daily reward.

My hunter (280ish if mem serves) has yet to get it from anything.

Got my journal last night on my latest character. She is level 37 with 225 fishing. First wreckage pool I found in Dustwallow produced the journal from a trunk/crate. As I noted in an earlier post, I've never had any problems getting the journal. You just need to fish pools as much as possible.

I found one in a debris pool I think in Southshore or might have been wetlands don't recall exactly now but anyway the toon only had fishing at around 100~ so I don't think it's dependent on fishing skill at all. Just random drop.

Your best bet for getting the fish finder is to fish debris pools and DO NOT open any of the trunks with your other characters. Mail them all to the character who needs the fish finder.

I've gotten mine from Dustwallow Marsh to Stonetalon and everywhere between, and have 8 different characters with them, so they're pretty easy to catch. However in the past, if you opened a trunk with one in it on a character who had a fish finder, the book would remain in the trunk. That was "fixed" so that now you won't get the fish finder on a character who has one.

I just got one (this weekend) for my lvl 22 Shaman fishing the floating debris south of Auberdine in Darkshore.

Just as FYI, I got this while fishing in Zangamarsh at skill 303

To add yet another great pool fishing location I would like to mention the shore of Feralas. The wandering elite giants are no problem (get the q from the goblin at the ferry, then you can zap the giants if they should cause trouble). This place usually has 15 pools, usually Oily Blackmouth, Firefins, and Stonescale eels :) The occasional floating debris also turns up. I have gotten the book on all 8 alts leveling fishing here - just fishing the stonescale eels for money and the floating debris pools for trunks.

The location in Hillsbrad is also great - the mobs in the water don't aggro, if you aggro a mob you can jump into it and will have no worries. The pools are rarely fished. Just watch out for the Southshore guards if you are Horde :)

I fished mine up from Tanaris. There is a lot of wreckage along that coast, seems to be more than anywhere else that I have seen.

I just started questing in the Wetlands and saw a oily blackmouth pool near Menethil Harbor. Decided to fish it even though my fishing skill is just 92. First cast produced a crate containing the journal. Talk about luck. Now I have to level to 100 to use it!!

I originally got mine from Zangarmarsh from one of those Steam Pump Flotsam pools. Like everyone else has said, your chances are a bit better if you aim for Floating Debris pools as opposed to straight up fishing or schools of fish, since you're more likely to get a chest or case... plus you get cloth! n.n

I have it on 9 or 10 toons. All of them got it at Mirkfallon Lake in Stonetalon.

edit: if you fish it on a main with it already and open the trunk and it shows as empty to you but the trunk stays in your inventory, then it is inside and send that empty looking trunk to your alt.
