Blacksmithing - Should I specialise?Follow

#1 Aug 09 2008 at 5:08 AM Rating: Decent
I have been level 70 for a little while now, and have a few thousand gold. It is time to look at my blacksmithing skill which was stuck at 269 for a long time :)
I spend 400g this morning getting from 269 to 283 but now I'm struggling for recipes to get to 300. Should I specialise? What will specialising give me or allow me to do? will it give me access to more plans?
Do I need to specialise in order to make the epic items at 375?

Thanks for your help.

You don't need to specialize to max out your blacksmithing and most people will tell you that the epics you can craft from either the armorsmithing or weaponsmithing take quite a while to not only farm mats for them, but you also need to be right around t5 content to get some of them, or pay outrageous amounts of gold.

My toon with blacksmithing has never specialized in either path and has been fine. From about 325 i think and up it's rough going since I think if I remember right the plans you learn from trainers run out and you're left either grinding rep with different factions or catching the sweet and rare deal on the AH for certain plans.

So long reply, but in the end, personally I wouldn't waste time specializing unless you have a toon, or friend that is in T5 content and can get you some of the items you'll need. Plus the badge loot, from what I've looked at easily compares and sometimes is better than the epic weapons/armor that you can make as a BS and the badges are relatively easy to get.

To make leveling blacksmithing a little easier, and maybe a little cheaper, check out lootables.com, they have a great leveling guide for any profession and basically give you the cheapest way to level any profession.

I don't believe that any of the weaponsmith/armorsmith plans will enable you to skillup to 300. You pretty much have two choices, and neither option is cheap. You can make gear from the Thorium or Radiant sets (plate and mail resistance gear, respectively) or you can make items from the Imperial Plate set. You should see Thorium/Radiant plans on the AH, or they can attempt to farm them as world drops (Un'goro Crater was fairly kind to me). You can buy the Imperial Plate recipes from Derotain Mudsipper in Gadgetzan, Tanaris.

Specializing will give you access to a small number of trainer-taught recipes that can only be made by blacksmiths with that specialization, including some epic pieces.

The tables on Allakhazam's blacksmithing site provide some info regarding which recipes require specialization to learn:

http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/skill.html?line=164&source=live&tier=artisan (pre-BC)

http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/skill.html?line=164 (BC)

Please note that many pre-BC items that formerly required specialization (as depicted on the pre-BC page) are now available to all blacksmiths. I believe that anything that is learned from plans (vice a trainer) is available to any blacksmith at the appropriate skill level.

It depends on what you mean by "the" epic items. Some recipes will require specialization. Many recipes at lvl 70/375 skill do not.
