have been reading a few sites about the excellent new profession of inscription and found something about researching both major and minor inscriptions. All I can find about it is that you can do the minor ones from trainers, and the other it was a little vague. Both require some type of reagent to do and have a 20 hour cooldown much like any of the other big transmutes that alchemists and tailors do. But what I don't get is if I do the "research" either for a major or minor, am I guaranteed to discover a new glyph?

Desperately needing any info thanks

That's an interesting question...I hadn't heard anything about this until now.

Frankly, I had been wondering about how the more "valuable" glyph recipes would be obtained. The thought of them being purchased through rep vendors is enough to make me shudder, since the last thing I have time for between now and the patch is grinding rep.

Edit, because I was curious:

Scroll down to the "Abilities" section.

From what I can piece together, Decipher does function like Disenchanting in a roundabout way. Scribes will get two abilities: Northrend Inscription Research (requires 400 Inscription skill) and Minor Inscription Research (requires 125 Inscription skill). Those are the abilities on the 20 hour cooldown, and when used, will create random scrolls. You would then most likely apply the Decipher skill to those scrolls for a chance to learn a new Glyph recipe (minor glyph from scrolls acquired through Minor research, major glyph from Northrend research scrolls).

Also, take a look at the item in the bottom middle of this screenshot: here

It's impossible to tell whether that item ("Floral Foundations") came from research, or whether it was one of the odd results reported by some folks while milling herbs.

Either way, it sounds like Blizzard is doing their best to make Inscription more interesting than simply "get recipes from trainer/world drop/dungeon boss/rep vendor, mill herbs, make Glyph, repeat". Kinda cool so far.

So if I'm reading that decipher skill right, its basically a disenchant/prospect that can be used on scrolls?

Sigh - and here I sold/burned all of those trash scrolls that dropped in the last few times I ran friends through lower level instances... >_<

Rusttle, it more appears that Decipher is more like a lockpicking for scrolls. There will be different scrolls that you will need to decipher in the game, and some scrolls you know what they are up front (locked chests vs unlocked chests).

I just tried the Minor Inscription on the PTR and learned a druid minor glyph as well as got a scroll of stamina. It will be interesting to see what the proc rate of learning lesser inscriptions is, though. Hopefully pretty high, because at 20 hours per it will take a while to learn them all.

Decipher, from what I read, can't be used on your standard Scroll of <stat> <tier>. It's for use on specific "encrypted" items that come about as a result of Research and possibly rare results from milling herbs.

Ah, kk - fair enough.

Not to come off as one of those "An orc would never say that" types, but it doesn't make all that much sense to me from any perspective that one would discover an undeciphered scroll from grinding up a bunch of herbs...

Click on the second link in my first response to the OP and look at the item in the middle on the bottom. It's not a scroll, but it's "encrypted".
