Question about matsFollow

I am leveling up a mage alt with tailoring and enchanting as the professions. I have had one heck of time leveling these due
to what I consider to be ridiculously high prices for certain mats; mageweave, runecloth, and illusion dust. I can't speak
to the illusion dust but the two cloth mats were pretty high 4-5 months ago when I was leveling another tailor so this is
not a new problem. Can anyone shed some light as to whats causing this?

Second some of our mats such as netherweave, arcane dust, some primals, etc. have dropped a lot in price recently. Did
anything like this happen to the top of the line mats in the weeks before BC came out? If so I am going to not burn through
a lot of things just to make space for something newer.

Very simple answer: supply and demand.

Most people don't linger long in the 45-60 level range and don't run very many of the instances. Therefore, the green/blue drops to DE are less common and the cloth doesn't pile up as much. There is a limited supply, so the prices go up. People that need the mats to get through profession leveling will pay the prices because it's faster to run dailies and buy them than farming the mats themselves.

The TBC mats are going down in price because people just don't need them as much right now. People aren't as interested in taking the time/money to craft high end pieces that will be made obsolete by WotLK. It's also at a point where the supply is huge. There are just a lot of high end crafters/gatherers that are flooding the market. My suspicion is that these things will bottom out, but then become expensive again as people progress to 80. As people get more and more into the Northrend content and use the new mats for professions, the supply of Outland mats will decrease. So, the situation will eventually be like that of the old high end mats from pre-TBC stuff where demand is greater than the supply.

That's my take on the situation.

As there are changes going on it is not so easy to level Enchanting but Tailoring i usually farm my own mats with my main.

About 2 months ago i stopped buying cheap Armour/Weapons from the Auction house as i had got my Enchanting to the max level for my alts level , profits from the excess mats left my level 42 Mage with 6000g and Tailored some nice gear she cannot yet use.

This is the way it was last time before BC came out , some prices went crazy then as well , but as has been said its all supply and demand , some are trying to profit from the crazy economy but i do expect it to level off again as that is what happened before .

All we can do is wait and see what happens and i am trying to guess what is worth collecting before for the Expansion or perhaps waiting until after to carry on getting mats.

Another things that's killing the price of outland mats is the fact that people have been stuck in outland long enough that there's a glut of stuff left over - my chanter has a bag or two of dust alone while my bank toon is practically drowning in netherweave.

Mageweave and runecloth are fairly common drops. Why are you buying instead of farming? Illusion dust is the same way. I always have plenty on hand from disenchanting, which I get from farming the AH while getting phylthie riche.

Because I have four characters that still need stuff and there is a shortage of time;
1) Two seventies that need more PvP to finish their welfare epics.
2) Another 70 who needs only to raise up his LW 10 points and some Cenarion faction.
3) Dailies for cash.
4) A 52 alt that I want to raise up to 70 and max out her skills of Tailoring and Enchanting b4 the X-Pac.

I just don't have the time to farm as you are suggesting. YMMV.
