An Orcish Trinket
Tonight I was just surfing the DB a little and saw a quest that was badly in need of updating, so I decided to do it myself and see what was involved. Wow! Even with a few glances at "The Other Guys(tm)" to fact check it, it took me almost an hour before I was satisfied with the results.
Needless to say, being both a programmer and a UI designer, I thought of about a hundred ways to improve those db UIs...
Instead of using lists to hold every entry in each of the DBs that relate to the page being created, use a single text line for each, let the editor type in the word and hit a send... this verifies it against the DB and then displays it in the example page at the top of the screen as an existing link (yellow on EQ2) or a redlink (orange on EQ2). If orange it would have 4 buttons next to it, Lookup, Create, Verify and Remove. Lookup or Create opens a new browser window to do what needs to be done, and Verify rechecks the links existence. The Update button at the bottom of the UI will not accept a page that still has redlinks.
Not only would this significantly decrease the bandwidth needed to open a UI page with filled lists, it would improve the completeness of most entries on the first pass!
