Letter Discusses DCUO Update 3, New Game Director

DC Universe Online Executive Producer Lorin Jameson has written a welcome back letter to the community following the recent hacker attack, and it's full of important information. Not only does Jameson outline what's coming in Update 3, but he also confirms that Mark Anderson is DCUO's new game director. The position was previously held by Chris Cao, who is not mentioned in the letter.

Here are the highlights of Update 3, which does not have an official launch date yet:

  • The featured character is Ra's al Ghul.
  • There will be a new Oolong Island Hard Mode Alert.
  • A new Two-Face Duo will take players into The Penguin's underground smuggling operation.
  • A spring event will pit Poison Ivy against Swamp Thing.

Jameson also hints at Update 4, which will "have a couple of new alerts, with one taking place in the Batcave. We will also be kicking off a new Raid series with new high level gear and a somewhat crystalline location."

DCUO Servers to be Merged Into MegaServers

Right before Sony Online Entertainment went offline following a hacker attack, the company announced that it will soon be merging all DC Universe Online servers into four MegaServers: PC-US, PC-EU, PS3-US and PS3-EU. "This will allow for more opportunities to queue and participate in other group related game mechanics," the team said.

Now that the game is back online, Executive Producer Lorin 'DeadMeat' Jameson has answered some questions about the upcoming MegaServers. It looks like the servers will use phasing technology to keep PvE and PvP players separate in the world while still allowing them to queue together for Alerts, Raids, Duos and so on. You can read the FAQ below.

To coincide with today's launch of DC Universe Online's Update 2, Senior Producer Wes Yanagi has written a letter to the community that hints at Update 3 and explains how the team was affected by SOE's recent layoffs. Let's start things off with the good news:

"Update 3 is well underway, but doesn’t have a target release date yet.  However, I can say that Ra’s Al Ghul, Swamp Thing, and a very intimidating version of Chang Tzu will make an appearance.  We’ll definitely provide more info over the upcoming weeks."

As for the bad news regarding SOE's layoffs, Yanagi said the "the team was impacted and we lost some great developers and friends, but rest assured that we will still deliver *super awesome* new content and updates on a regular basis. And, we appreciate your support!"
