Q&A: Nate Birkholz, City of Heroes' New Producer

Paragon Studios recently announced that City of Heroes Producer Jesse "Ghost Falcon" Caceres would be moving to a different position at the studio, and with that announcement also came the introduction of the game's new producer, Nate "Second Measure" Birkholz. Immediately following the introduction, Birkholz came busting out the door with some of his plans for the future of City of Heroes.

Now, with DC Universe Online already out on the market and tons of new MMOs on the way, Senior Staff Writer Chris "Pwyff" Tom decided to sit down with Birkholz to talk about how City of Heroes plans to compete in the market, as well as some of his views on the MMO industry in general. The new producer also reflects on the game's seventh anniversary, which will be celebrated in April.

Champions Producer Reflects on Free-to-Play Switch

Following our recent adventure in Champions Online: Free for All, we decided to sit down with Producer Rob Overmeyer to get his thoughts on the free-to-play switch. He talks about the response from the player base and future plans for the game, including the upcoming release of the Devastator Archetype and some new PvP maps.

Gamer Day: Roundtable Discussion with Trion Worlds

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend Trion Worlds' third Gamer Day event at their office in Redwood City, CA to get a closer look at Rift before its official launch on March 1. During the event, I participated in a roundtable discussion with members of the Trion team, including Russ Brown, vice president of development; Scott Hartsman, chief creative officer and executive producer; and Design Producer Hal Hanlin. With several other fan and news sites in the mix, we learned many interesting tidbits and took a peek into Rift's future.

Chris Cao Sheds Light on the February DCUO Update

Leading up the the launch of DC Universe Online, Sony Online Entertainment promised that they would regularly add new content to the game in the form of monthly updates. They weren't kidding. We had the opportunity talk about the comic MMO's first major update with Game Director Chris Cao, and it's safe to say that players have a lot to look forward to this month when it goes live in mid-February.

The update will include a new Catwoman episode, a Valentine's Day event, the launch of the auction house, the second part of the end-game Batcave raid, some chat system fixes, and much more. “There is literally something for everybody in all of this,” Cao said. Jim Lee Reflects on DC Universe Online's Launch

Jim Lee is a legend in the world of comics. He's earned many titles throughout his career: artist for Marvel Comics, co-founder of Image Comics, founder of WildStorm and currently co-publisher of DC Comics. He's also the executive creative director for DC Universe Online, which just launched three weeks ago after five years in development.

Editor-in-Chief Darryl "Togikagi" Gangloff got the chance to sit down with Lee to reflect on the game's release and why he enjoys interacting with players. Lee also hints that lucky players may get the opportunity to have their characters featured in the pages of the upcoming DC Universe Online Legends bi-weekly comic, which comes out in early February. While it's not a confirmed plan, he hopes to make it a reality.

ZAM Discusses TERA Westernization with Brian Knox

In the latest edition of En Masse Entertainment's Race and Class Series, the team briefly touched on what it means to Westernize TERA for a North American and European audience. Basically, the short paragraph explained that En Masse wants their players to feel like TERA was made for them.

We wanted to know more about the Westernization process, so we decided to go straight to Senior Producer Brian Knox to discuss the similarities and differences between the Korean and NA/EU versions of the game. ZAM's Q&A with Need for Speed World's Eneko Bilbao

Updates for Electronic Arts' Need for Speed World MMO have been racing along at a steady pace. The game went free-to-play in September and recently received a new performance customization system that added more depth to the game. To top it off, EA studio Black Box announced earlier this month that NFSW has surpassed three million registered users.

ZAM Talks Game Writing with BioWare's David Gaider

If you've been keeping up with our Dragon Age 2 coverage over the past week, then you know that I visited the BioWare offices in Edmonton with a few other journalists to check out what all the fuss was about over BioWare's latest foray into the fantasy RPG world.
