My Idea
# May 02 2005 at 6:49 PM Rating: Decent
I dont know about the rest of you but i think that SE could get a boost in accounts, if they made it possible to transfer characters from one account to another. I have a character on a friend of mines account, and I would definatly get my own, if I was able to play my character that I have been playing for months now. To me it would seem easier to move character, than to bring back accounts that have been deleted. Just my opinion, what do you al think?

It's a nifty idea... and my brother would have loved it. (Although I'd be out a warping chocoable mule ^^)

There's a huge downside though...

Can you imagine how many sold accounts we'd see floating around after this?
Makes me wonder . . .

I wonder how many people are leaving FFXI. It seems SE is launching several campaigns to bring people back, recruit new players, or get start new characters on different servers.

FFXI is a good game, don't get me wrong, but with all the rampant inflation and such . . .

Who knows? I'll be playing it for a while, at least. I still haven't settled down on a job.

This actually sounds kind of nice. I started playing last July; I'd love to be able to play with my best friend, and he's expressed interest in joining once he starts getting a regular paycheck. I wanted to be able to party with him, but the fact that I've been playing for a lot longer means that most of the jobs I enjoy playing are already leveled a bit. Having an item that means we could always play together as whatever jobs we wanted would be wonderful. :D

SE getting desperate?
# Apr 29 2005 at 6:07 PM Rating: Decent
Maybe they are hoping for fresh blood from the people they screwed over continuosly. Maybe they are hoping to recoup losses from the MMORPG exodus from this game to others *cough* WoW *cough*. I see this as a cheap way of passing the buck. I've seen this thing in the Military. SE is getting desperate, but they won't admit it. Maybe now we'll start seeing more changes in the game.
Can I?

I have a friend on my server who is levels lower than I am, and I would love to be able to play with them using these items.

Is there anyway to get these berets, even though they already have an account?

As far as the item gain for recruitment goes, the player recruited actually gets 12 chocopasses right from the start (which works for all lvls!!), but, yes, the recruiter has to wait a while to get anything. *shrug* Such as life.

As far as the idea that the big SE is doing the recruitment plan b/c they're having problems...I doubt it. Does AOL do advertising? Yes. Are they the largest dial-up provider? Yes. Why do they do it? Because they want even more money. I have a feeling it's much the same way for SE.

Thus is the capitalistic society. Though it makes sense that they would give the new characters stuff right away and make the recruiter wait a long time before getting stuff, because a person could recruit a lot of people and get lots of free stuff right away. They want the people to stay for a long time so they can get money from the new people, and reward the recruiters for bringing them long time paying members.
Missing information

There's also a fun little ditty that you'll find if you read the whole update anywhere. If I read correctly, you don't even GET these gifts until forty days of game play. So that's your free month plus ten days. Then one hundred days of game play (one free month, two months and ten days) you both get more presents. Same applies to a year after subscription.
Still Profit

That was my first instinct. I wouldnt say not cutting a profit though. After all, we only pay for the game then the subscription. The subscription price would be determined by not only value and competitiveness of price, but also what sort of fee will give them a profit considering the maintenance of servers and new work plus other overheads to running the game. They may for example make $3 profit per month per content ID. the extra $1 people pay for extra characters would be all profit i would assume, that is why it seems so "cheap" to us. therefor if you consider the fact that there are something like 500 000 content ids (more than that probably) and each person has on average 2.2 characters (according to that playonline census in the developers section. i dont think it is very current data) then you would for example be making around $4 per account per month. so you are looking at about 24 million dollars profit. and that is just for the year with your overheads covered. So you can see how a small amount of profit per subscription would easily make this profitable. Keep in mind as well that the costs would no increase in a linear fashion. it would likely jump in blocks so the idea would be to maintain the lowest amount of cost per customer.

As an example, consider that the cost per month per account of maintaining a customer account comes to $9 if you have 300 000 content ids. now this may drop to say $6 per account if you get 375000 content ids. However it may jump a block when you go up to 400 000 content ids because you may need some new servers to handle it and then the price goes back to about $9 per account per month. These are just guesses at figures but the prices are likely to behave like this because of economies of scale and how they impact virtual services can benefit so greatly from it.

My guess is that the rate of new content ids isn't growing but perhaps decreasing. it could also be that the growth rate (lets say 3.2% per month which would be alot) is dropping (so it is heading to 2.8% or something like that).

Thus their idea would be to leverage the large customer base they have now in order to boost this growth rate. If even 1 in 10 people bought a person to the game it would be an incredibly profitable venture considering that it costs them nothing to give virtual presents.
To Be Clear...

So I have to get a friend to buy an account in order to recieve a Guide Beret and my friend receive the Sprout Beret..... So if I convince my friend to buy an account before May 10th, we won't get the items because "Recruitment" hasn't started?? Does this mean that NO current players get Sprout Berets even if they are still little newbies?
How do we get this
# Apr 28 2005 at 9:20 PM Rating: Decent

Unless you joined recently, haven't you already tried to convince and failed or succeeded with all the friends you have to play yet? =P

Yes, yes we have [failed]. As of yet, anyways. I'm offering a friend to use my second or purchase a third content ID. Until then, only one friend has played this game, but he quit before I found out he even owned this game...

The Sprout Beret and Guide Beret are a fantastic way to party with your friend at their own pace, without having to level a new job.

This is done with enchantments. Both berets have infinite charges, but long recast times. The user may switch headgear after using the enchantment.

The Guide Beret contains an enchantment that causes the user's level to be restricted to the Sprout's level, so that they can party together! Recast: 30 hours.
Restriction: Sprout must be level 50 or less.

The Sprout's Beret allows the user(low level friend) to remove that level restriction. So if your XP party takes a nosedive and there is a terrible link, high-level friend to the rescue! They won't have full HP/MP, but a level 75 in Valkurm Dunes is near invincible any way you slice it.
Recast: 10 hours.

Again, the idea here is that the low level friend can XP as much as they want, whether their high level friend is around or not. They will always be able to party together.

edit: the high level player doesn't gather XP, but they might get conquest points. Thank you Aniane and Anonymous

Oh, and lest you forget, the high level's XP will go towards his fully leveled job. This is similar to Promyvion XP.

According to PlayOnline:

*Players who are under the level restriction effect of the guide beret cannot gain EXP.

however...they imply by omission in the "note this is not going to help you xp" bit that

*** you will be able to get conquest points while under level restriction (free stuff yay!) ***

So,the point of the Guide and Sprout items are to allow a more experienced player (with Guide Beret) to help out a less experienced player (with Sprout Beret); and additionally, obtain some of the event items that other players have missed out on.

Very nice! ^^

Wow SE does listen...I made a suggestion similar to this long ago but it wasn't for new players but rather players that are already in the game
