Yesterday I have the day off -- UPDATE DOWNTIME

Last Tuesday I have the day off -- MAINTENANCE

The Wednesday before I have the day off -- MAINTENANCE

Today -- MAINTENANCE THAT ENDS JUST BEFORE WORK

Everyday -- Chinese gil farmers getting paid $2 an hour swarming all over every good farming area in the whole game 24/7 as their company characters are run in shifts. DIE! =/

I understand very much that no matter what time this is set for someone will be inconvenienced, but I would like to know why the F*CK I AM PAYING MONTHLY FOR A GAME IM NOT GETTING TO PLAY!?!?!? They don't care if they inconvenience you but the customer is always right, therefor I am right when I say that these pricks are fine with shutting off your access to the game if your payment is a day late do to mailing problems, but when it comes to letting us play the game we are expected to pay for, we can't.

If you have an opinion about this, I'm interested in hearing it, however whatever I say is right and whatever you say is wrong, unless of course you agree with me.

wow .. you've never, ever gotten to play? .. man,
i'd cancel my account if i were you ;D .. how did
you become a pearlsack holder without ever having
gotten in-game?

all in good fun mate ;) .. i share your frustration
but i'd rather they fix the problem, whatever it
is, than let it fester like certain mega-giant
tech-monopolies ( *cough* M$ ) we all know and
'love' and simply tell the individually affected
customer "sorry, nothing we can do"

as for the customer always being right, heh ..
i've been in the tech field for a looong time ..
the customer is almost always *wrong* .. your
average schmoe off the street doesn't know how to
fix cars as well as a trained auto mechanic ..
the problem with doing tech work is you have to
mollify the customer. square at least apologizes
for the inconvenience.

i don't like the frequent downtimes, either, but
the game is freakin Huge .. how could they test
all this stuff thoroughly enough for it to be bug
free and still give us frequent new stuff to do
in-world?

I love reading all these whining posts from PS2 players that must have never experienced real maintenance nightmares in any game, ever... It may be trite and overused, but there's no doubting Everquest was/is the king of the 9 hour maintenance + 5 1-2 hour emergency patches... Comparatively, FFXI is a very stable game with minimal issues that pop up even after extensive changes/additions, and an 8 hour maintenance once, maybe twice a week that actually starts and ends when it's supposed to seems almost a blessing in comparison...

C'mon, let's hear "this isn't EQ and I PAY $14 A MONTH FOR THIS TIHS IS AN OUTRAGE"... You aren't going to get incredible performance on a console that costs roughly the same as a top of the line graphics card for a computer, and if you can't handle updates, patches, and server maintenance regardless of reliability, then a persistent ever-growing ever-changing online game is probably not for you... If you're looking for a one player Final Fantasy game that never needs bug fixes and new content but you can play online and cyber with 100 other people with variations of the name Sephiroth, you can always just cancel your account and hit up MSN chat while playing FFX-2 :P

First off, we're not whining, some of us players would suggest that SE should do maitenance at 10:00am-6:00pm one day and switch to 10:00pm-6:00am the next. We all pay the $12.95 a month for the game and so do the Japanese but I don't see them ever having to experience downtime during their peak hours. Only the Americans are made to suffer...

When the Europeans join us next week they'll get screwed to since 10:00 PDT is like 17:00 or 18:00 GMT.

And finally why would you want to Play X-2, FFX is a much better game IMO. :)

Happy Crawler Hunting!

I have to agree with Sturme on this one. EQ was HORRIBLE for extensively long updates, many with very little notice, and almost all ending at the schedualed time. I must say, I find it refreshing to pop on here and see an update will start at Noon til 8 my time... and at 8, I can actually get the update and log on.

Ya, I do have to agree with one counter point, it would be really nice to see SE do an update during JP peek times instead of NA, even if it was every other time, or alternate each month. But, I can't battle the reliability of the game and the common sense of the company. 2/3rds of the players are Japanese. If an update is going to cost SE customers, put yourself in their shoes. 1/3 of a pay cut... or 2/3's. Not a really tough decision.

Besides, it gives me a reason to hop on my bike for a nice long ride instead of sit in front of my computer. Some poeple get WAY too attached to a game, and others take it to the extreme, pissed off that they can't go on, even if they weren't planning on it.

The way I see it, if once a week (on average) there is a day I cannot play, I'd feel pretty worried about myself if I got upset, wondering if I needed to go to some sort of group therapy to help my addiction to a mere game that has no baring on how poor or well I do in my actual life.

And to argure the 13 dollars a month we pay... it might shock you to hear this but... we're paying FOR the updates. If there were no updates, there would be no monthly fees. But, why on earth would anyone want to pay for such a thing? Keep the game interested, new items, new things to do. You're paying for the game to change, deal with it.

New update idea
# Sep 14 2004 at 1:38 PM Rating: Decent
Have any of you played other MMORPG's before this one? Come on, complaining about downtime will do nothing to fix the problems. Wait! Just leave the problems be, I wanna play! Who cares that if you happen to talk to the wrong NPC the game freezes. LET ME PLAY!
/endrant
Therefor I propose the following alternative to the downtime. The process for updates on the client side (our side) seems to follow a pattern.
1. Check for new update
2. Check all files for which files need updated. (This step is important, as it also helps prevent hacking)
3. Download the files needed
4. Install the files

If I am even close to correct on this, then it should be possible to delay the action between step 3 and 4.
The new steps would be
1. Check for new update
-2. If 1 is present
2. Check for time of demand
3. Check all files for which files need updated
4. Schedule download time (default to when logged out)
5. Download files
-6. (at time of demand) server goes down 30 minutes
6. Install files

This should allow most people to only experience the 30 minute server down time away from the game.

If (Time of demand) has expired then reguardless if downloaded and installed, it would be required before you could log on.

This should also help eliminate 500,000 people from trying to download the updates at the same time.

SE sends messages out starting from 1 hour to the logout time, then a half hour, then 20, 25, 10 and five minutes usually, as well as the one when it is time.

This does not stop the steady stream of "Will my character get damaged if I don't log out?" "How many minutes is it before log-out?" "Do we have to log out during the maintenance?" "Is the maintenance today?" Shouts, in fact, they pick up right after they send the log out messages.
SE screwed up
# Sep 14 2004 at 1:35 PM Rating: Decent
I think the bottom line is that they screwed up in their update yesterday. Granted, they were probably rushed, lord knows had they extended it again i would have been out for blood. Beyond what has been mentioned here (BLM scythes, nomad moogles, etc), there were other problems, such as signatures on items getting screwed up. They messed up the inscription on one of my ls members wedding ring, they were quite upset. I'm guessing it was much more widespread to warrant maintenace again.

I think they are going to mess up the economy with this new updated version. The drops i noticed are much faster...i went to go get the sub job quest items for a friend...i did it in less than15 minutes.... the first ghoul that i killed dropped the skull. =/ (its a good thing though of course.) But i have noticed that the rarer items are also harder to find. Which makes cheaper items cheaper, and rarer items more expensive than ever before. Especially with all these people whos used to use bots just got f#$ked over. People will most likely not be able to afford anything over a mill or 2. ...just my opinion

I was doing the same thing on Saturday and we grabbed one of each mob we needed and we got the right drops on the first try. Actually we grabbed 3 ghouls, not in a row, but they all dropped the skull. We had 3 peeps get all their sub job items in less then an hour and a half. It only took that long cause we had to find the right mobs. I havent seen a change in drops, just my opinion too!

There are lots of other ways to make gil. Nm's, mining. Not to mention fishing bots can be made in other places besides rabao. In fact, the place I fished at yesterday had the same catch rate for Rusty Caps as it did before. And I sold them all for the same price that I would have in Rabao in the AH within minutes of putting them up. You just have to find the right item to sell. Everyone has their own ways.

The scythe is as follows:

Mandibular Sickle: DMG 67 Delay 501 Lvl. 46 War/Blm/Drk/Bst

And the +1:

Antlion Sickle: DMG 68 Delay 490 Lvl. 46 War/Blm/Drk/Bst

Geez, thanks for replying. This is the most negative forum ever. I have an idea, go outside, do some work, clean stuff up. Call your grandma, or your mom and tell her you love her. Let the game rest for a bit while they work on it. Stop flaming jp's, stop flaming SE. Things have to be updated people. I dont know what the big deal is.

Tonight, when I get off work I will go home, fire up my super pc (with a 20.1 flat panel), grab a beer and watch the install, smiling happily the entire time. AHHHH, life is good.

personally i want to know if higher lvls exping in the capped areas will get decent exp, but without the massive exp loss from dying. i can imagine lvl 75's getting their merit points this way.

There's an expansion coming out as you should all know unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months.. what SE is doing isn't something that should be new or unexpected.. yes I know it's annoying but don't explode over the game not being available for a few hours - We have people playing in what.. 6+ different timezones? Soon to be more when the European version is released, no matter what time they pick it's gonna be impossible to make everyone happy. So just sit it out while they prepare the servers for the new release and when it comes out and gets up and running we'll all be so happy with all of the new things to see and do - these rough times will be forgotten. Think about the future of the game :)

Well, I don't think you can blame me for being upset... yesterday and today were my days off. It's like they timed it like this on purpose.
Lmao, actually the main reason I'm upset is because I do HQ synthesis on Lightsday in order to make gil, and I've missed the last 4 Lightsday now (missing the 4th as we speak) due to either maintenance or a long frickin download and probs with POL... sheesh ppl!
