Plague or Treat?

DAoC Halloween

Plagued if you do, damned if you don't!

One of the most amazing things about these fantastic games we play is the storyline. All too often though, as much as players are told they can influence and affect the world around them, they're relegated to the position of audience instead of storyteller.

The Lich King, Arthas himself, brought pain and suffering to the people of Azeroth this last week flinging zombies upon the world to create havoc and chaos. It seems that while some players embraced the opportunity to become part of the event, others found their play times disrupted. However, for every player that was frustrated by the invasion, as many found themselves enjoying Blizzard's creativity.

Players fought the zombies mercilessly, but succumbed to a zombie curse themselves once they found their target slain. While normally factions can not fight each other, the zombie plague allowed anyone zombieified to attack any non-zombie player. This led to griefing, in some instances by higher level players on their own allies.

The frustration, for most players, came from the fact that they were forced to participate, whether they consented to the battles or not. Participation came with sky high repair bills for armor and equipment, after multiple deaths in many cases, adding to the angst and defeat of those who wanted no part.

Those who embraced the event found themselves either infecting zombie-ism across the land, or curing zombies to bring them back to their normal state. The battle raged on across the lands, and, in a twist that excited almost everyone, players of Alliance or Horde were unified in their zombie state, and were able to communicate with each other!

So why the hate? Well, for the most part people despise not being able to play the game they're paying for without being hindered in manners they can't choose. It's perfectly understandable really. You log in every night at 7:30, after a long day at work and playing with the kids. You hit the auction house, grab your buddies and head out for the night's adventure.

But before you can even make it out of Stormwind you're attacked and killed 12 times, or turned into a zombie and attacked by others. In fact, it was rumored that the worst issue came from higher level characters sweeping through low level areas and devastating those who couldn't fight back. What fun is that? Trying to buy or sell something? Sorry! Your auction master has been defeated in the plague and will respawn shortly, only to be killed instantly once again.

The call of "I play on a PvE server for a reason" became the calling card of all those who found their playtime disrupted and unenjoyable through no fault of their own. No one enjoys being forced to participate in anything that they don't want, and the great thing about MMOs is that you can always go find something else to do...at least, unless you were playing WoW last week.

For the other folks though, the event is being called the most well put together, implemented, story driven, chaotic, fun event - ever!! There's no way that WoW players don't know that the arrival of the Lich King is imminent, and isn't that the idea behind a "story driven" world? Those who became zombies, or helped fight them off found themselves banded together in common cause and enjoyed a fantastic event that honestly blew everyone in the genre away with creativity and fun.

These folks had a taste of the storytelling that Blizzard is famous across all genres and games for. Who could ask for more?

I guess, in the end, you can't please all the people all of the time. For those who play on PvE servers for a reason I know that Blizzard was only trying to give you a different experience and, obviously, it wasn't appreciated. For the folks who spent the last week or so constantly zombied or healing their fingertips off, know that you took part in an MMO experience that no one has matched, and few are likely to ever try. A true tragedy, honestly.

When events are staged in most MMOs, either by volunteer staff or game masters employed by the studios, carnage and chaos often ensue. It is fair to say that most MMO events call for mobs that are un-killable, and players being killed mercilessly. Oftentimes zones or areas where the event is being staged become overburdened by the amount of people and action and often crash or become so lagged that it's impossible to enjoy the event.

While those who choose to participate could have fun, more often than not those who do not want to participate are sometimes forced, and those who wish to have trouble gaining access to the zone or mobs required as players flock to events.

It's good to see we've moved past that time. Technology and tools are providing events in MMOs much more often now, but the fact remains some players hate some events, and others love them. It's not that much different from tastes in game play styles.

But even now, another WoW event is going on - It's Hallow's End! Trick or Treat, and enjoy the fun - until the next controversial event comes around!

Happy Halloween!

I liked the event

World of Warcraft has always been a very "care bear" MMO. Everything is easy and getting easier, nothing bad really happens, and there are very minor penalties for death. That being said, when this event started, I wasn't sure what to make of it. By the end of the event, I loved it. It was fantastic. It forced people to actually pay attention and it made people have an actual concern of safety. I hope/wish this even would continue in some zones of the expansion, but I realize it's unlikely.

I do feel the pain of the newbies though. During the invasion I was attempting to level both my alts and my wifes alts. I could be frustrating at times, but one thing I learned was that most of the people complaining about it, were people who just wanted to make it harder on themselves. People who were either brand new to the game without preconceived ideas of how it should play, and people willing to roll with the changes, had little problem avoiding major cities and just doing their quests. In fact, it added a level of excitement that the game had started to lack after the first few years of play.
Plague issues from my point

My late 2 cents worth

I had a couple basic issues with the event that could have had easy fixes.
I have vast experience as a dungeon master for other games and other realms but am relatively new to WOW. So far the Devs and staff of Blizzard have far exceeded my expectations and have done an awesome job. With that said here's what I saw and what may have been a fix for each, just offered as food for thought for when the next breakout occurs.

1. If you were one of the unfortunate players that had just purchased the game and logged on you were Zombied before ever getting any real taste of the game or server. Once a zombie you had a choice, die and try again or play life as a zombie. Not really worth the price of admission if you have no indication that its temporary. Fix by limiting the effects to level 5 or higher, allowing a person to get thier feet wet before hitting the respawn circuit.

2. Although a real outbreak would have no boundries there may need to be some, for instance if I go to Darkshire I expect to see zombies. If I go to the city with the best protection in game such as Shatrath I tend to expect that things would be safer. Same with Aldor and Scryer points where guards are posted to keep the unwanted out. Simply allow some of the NPCs to resist and fight back rather then fall victim as easily as they did.

Lastly yes I was one of the people that hated the event, not because of the event but because of the players that used it as an excuse to grieve lower levels and totally disrupt any gameing effort by the lower levels. I was able to log a higher level character and get on with my game. While those new to the game or those that were forced onto a new server after thiers crashed found themselves spawned as a level 1 with no gear no talents and no hope into the middle of a zombie infestation. Give newbies a break now and then, they pay the same as anyone else and will become the future of the game.
How to beat the Zombie Event 101

How to beat the Zombie Event 101

1. Stay the Hell OUT of Ironforge AND Stormwind... Darnasass and Exodar were both like a 1000 times safer. (if you need to use AH or w/e)

2. TAKE YOUR GEAR OFF!... (if you're a QQ'er about repairs)

You people who QQ about world events are unbelievably boring imo.

Could have worked but Blizzard forgot there are griefers

One night towards the end of the plague, when you would only have 60 seconds til turning after infection, I was battling just to stay alive in stormwind while attempting to post a few auctions. I was about lvl54 or so and while I could have happily done many of my quests and avoided the cities, I chose to stay and defend stormwind and in particular its bank and auction house. Being a priest, I was lucky in that I could heal myself. Only on a couple of occasions where I was aboslutely swarmed was I killed or couldn't heal cure myself in time. I started a raid group and advertised regularly on the trade channel for "zombie haters" to join me in defending against the zombies. After banding together and fighting off the swarms of zombies with some success, we realised that at times there were individuals who were hanging around the infected crates, infecting themselves, then attempting to infect the entire AH (I think much of the AH could be infected by a player exploding in the alley beside it, which was a bit dumb really). I took it upon myself to follow the people who did this and constantly cure them when they infected themselves. In our raid group we would mark them with stars and skulls etc. so we could identifiy them faster. One of them put me on ignore. He kept telling me to stop following him but I would reply that I was simply helping him. As I was doing this I briefly had the feeling that I myself was becoming a griefer. I was attempting to ruin the fun for the griefers. I found it very amusing that these high level players were getting frustrated by those following them curing them - giving them a taste of their own medicine! :) Anyway, enough of my story...

What bothered me the most was that the event gave the griefers a tool for inflicting a lot of frustation on low levels (40 or below). I suspect Blizzard had not anticipated this. During the plague time I only played my priest - all my other characters were too low level and too vulnerable to get any use out of playtime.

Overall I can see some merit in the event - I personally found it interesting but only because at the low 50s levels as a priest I could reasonably expect to survive and it was a good challenge at that level.

I liked someone's suggestion that there should have been more guards on duty, and that you couldn't be infected more than every hour. Heck even 10 minutes would have been ok - that would have at least made it more boring for the people repeatedly infecting themselves.

The lesson Blizzard need to learn from this event is that you should always assume the worst of some players. Any event where you can affect other players really needs to be well planned to ensure the rude and selfish actions taken by a few do not ruin the game for many. For a while the event was not about fighting a plague, but in fact fighting off bored level 70 griefers who'd been given the perfect tool for bullying lower level players even in their own faction. In online games you can't rely on the common decency of every player because of the anonymity and the fact there are little to none consequences for behaving in an antisocial way.

If Blizzard were trying to lose subscriptions and send people in search of other games, then the event was a success, account cancelled, lost $5 deposit on WotLK, and bought a new game to go play.....woo hoo Bliz, wtg.

Not that they will care, I am 1 person amongst 11 million, is just too bad about 9 million won't follow suit.
My Take

I have bee plying under a year and my highest level character is 60. I did not find the event too bad, except for once. I flew into Ironforge to drop a quest and *BANG* before I had fully rezzed into solidity I was a zombie and 2 seconds later dead. I never had a chance. It took 45 minutes ofr working my way out of the city so I could hearth and get away. I did go to Goldshire and help by healing the <15 crowd and had fund doing that. But I did stay away from most towns.

As to whether it was a "Good" event I have nothing to compare it too. Was it chaotic and seemingly random? - Yes Was it tied to the Lich King - Nope. Mostly because once Zombied most people seemed to attack a few folks and cause them to go down. Herds of intelligent Zombies wandering around made it difficult, but not impossible to get things done. It was inconvenient, but nothing more I know I paid like 10g to repair my gear, but I did help other out.

I am not upset about not getting rewarded, but I must admit, I was not liking not being able to dodge the conflict. When i was running around healing, then I was a target, but when i was attempting to turn in a quest....i should have gotten a warning. It seemed on my server the very first thing the Zombies did was gang up and kill the Healers. Then I could not get healed, once in the city I had 30 seconds until....*BANG* Welcome to Zombie ville.

Also, no matter what we did it was not a factor in the outcome. The AH came in and solved it. But overall I did not stop playing or file a ticket. I just found ways to work within the boundaries and make it work.

I too play on a PVE server, and fortunately for myself I have 4 70's and was leveling a hunter during the event, but he was in the low 60's at the time so I was able to escape what pained many lowbies. I personally think that Blizzard was trying to give us something new to do, and with the expac coming up I suppose they saw the need to give some reason for going to Northrend in the first place. While I have played Warcraft 3 and the Frozen Throne in the past, and have an understanding of the back-story, many people who play WOW do not, and from that standpoint I think I understand why Blizzard did what they did.

However...

If I were new to WOW, this event probably would have made me stop playing the game. I at least had the ability to defend myself, or if things became too annoying, I could run off with guildies to some instance somewhere and be unaffected by the plague for a while. Many lowbies and new players, especially those who are playing the game for the first time without knowing anyone, did not have this ability. During the event I was trying to go get the candy buckets for the Halloween event, and found myself stuck in Sepulcher where 4 level 70 members of another guild were running around the town turning everything into a zombie. The fact that the flight master was dead was an annoyance to me, but there were several players levels 15-20 just standing around unable to do anything, while several others ran up to either grab or turn in quests, only to immediately be set upon by these 4 70's. When I attempted to fight them, I was quickly surrounded and zombified, and was then forced to blow myself up since there was not any way anything in that area was going to kill me. After rezzing , I looked for the 70's but they had left the area, but the flight master being dead, I resolved to start towards Hillsbrad on foot. I ran into them along the road, and by use of my fire ele and some luck, I managed to down all 4 of them, though I was turned into a zombie in the process. I was unable to kill myself before the first of them came back to his body, so I decided I was going to walk to the coast and drown myself rather than let these guys get infected by me and thus start the process over. The only thing I got for my efforts were a constant barrage of very negative messages from the individuals who had up to this point been ruining the game for others who could not defend themselves at all. Its sad that such people delight in doing things to players who can't fight back, yet berate a player for standing up for those who can't stand up for themselves.

The other major problems I had with the event were that for one, my computer crashed 4 times during the event I am guessing because it couldn't keep track of all of the dead bodies in Shatt. Secondly, I hope I am not the only person who did not like the fact that I could not kill the players who were running around infecting Shatt. I mean seriously, if I saw a zombie running around a city I was in, I would blow it apart, whether I was in an area that did not allow violence or not.

Others have offered ways to have made the event better for everyone, and I do not have much to add. I admit that it was fun to kill other horde for once, but on the whole i think Blizzard completely blew what could have been a nice change of pace. Maybe next time they will realize that there are plenty of people who will abuse an event like this one, and that safeguards need to be in place to either level the playing field, or protect those players who can get nothing from the event but frustration.

And as a side note, I have yet to see someone on this forum write to say that their only characters were below level 40 and they loved the event. Some of us have had 70's for so long we are bored with most of the game, and many of us have probably forgotten what it is like to do things for the 1st time. Remember that before you go and start ruining the game for those who have yet to experience the best of what WOW has to offer.

The obvious "sanctuary" problem in Shattrath was very likely a factioning issue Blizzard chose not to rectify during testing mostly likely due to insufficient time to get that working. Zombies weren't protected considering whether NPC or player, the zombies got blown to kingdom come if they got too close to A'dal by an Argent Healer. As such, it was not a particularly good point to ignore IMO. I suppose there was some consolation in it if you got converted in Shattrath as you'd have time to work out your buttons and moves. But seriously, if you really wanted to be a zombie, you'd figure it out sooner or later.

I suppose it's too bold to say I'm speaking for all PvE so I'll state the scope of my observation. Whenever I'm online, Shattrath appeared to have no more than 4-5 active zombies doing the malicious zombie things. And they managed to **** off every member of my guild of about at least 30+ of the 100+ I saw online. As my guild isn't the only one frequenting Shattrath, I'm going out on a limb in saying that the ones "enjoying" the event was FAR fewer than those who were put out.

From about halfway through the event, I began hearing stories about bank alts being decimated in addition to the many (important) NPCs. Loss of Auction House personnel and Flight Masters rate as the highest qualms. It was like this when bored (could say more about them but it'd be censorable) level 70s raid a 20-30 town, ganking lowbies and stranding people hoping to fly out on the respawned FM. They are there. They are, as far as I can tell, have ALWAYS been there. For Blizzard to ignore this element of the player base in Shattrath I consider to be poor judgement. All the other cities functioned reasonably well IMO with the formation of "lynching" raids to cleanse and decimate the zombies in town. During phase 4? our guild master got so peeved he had us all rock up at SW Trade District just before our raid and we just whalloped the zombies and their infection left right and centre, forming a small green zone.

The inconveniences caused can be easily likened to calling in a bomb threat, hijackings, and run-of-the-mill terrorism Al-Qaida is well known for. The mentality of those who find joy in constantly doing such things should be examined. For if they didn't vent it onto WoW, one would wonder where they'd end up.

Oh, as a small point of note, I did my bit killing the zombies, player or not. And I did my bit... small bit, comparatively, I guess, spreading it around on the odd occasion I got the "rash". It was fun to play the 2 sides at the pop of a debuff. But that one thing of not going full PvP in Shattrath spoilt it for me where I spent most of my time in between instances, dailies, and stuff. I would have much preferred to have the situation in the Old World where zombie players were fair game in-town where I had most of my fun, brief as it was compared to my time in Shatt.

My characters were a raiding 70, 60-70 levelling one who was somewhat safe, and a 30-ish one who pretty much spent the entire event filed away. I'll have to agree with the other posters here and say that there were some tweaks and protections that should have been applied to increase the level of participation of the lower levels without their dying every few seconds.

I play on a PVE server, I used to play years ago and quit due to lack of time and just started playing again, my highest level toon at the time was 15, my wife also had lvl 15 at the time and while it was sometimes very annoying to try and get things done I have to say that I enjoyed this event and participated to the best of my lowbie abilities, when zombified I would wander through the city and try to attack anyone that got near me and then explode, when not zombified I tried to help kill off the zombies. My wife and I were just saying to each other last night that we missed the event because the random zombies made trying to go to the bank a little more intersting.
Amazing feat, but I bowed out

I loved it, admired it, was impressed Blizz would even try it...but, it wasn't a good playing time for me. I chose to bow out...hunt distant places to work on other things (which didn't work very well). Finally, I gave up and logged off until it all went away.

I agree, it was creative, and a lot of fun.

however for those of us that DONT PVP it was FAR more headache than it was worth. I am one of the ones who wants to play and interact when I want to (which is quite often but not always). I quit playing my two low levels and stayed away from the places that were supposed to be safe zones. Much like the example given. Stormwind was a joke. I'm happy to be on a RP server, where the storylines rule, and people have the option of flagging themselves if they CHOOSE.

But people intentionally forcing everyone else to be involved is cruel and stupid. To those people, I agree that the storyline was unique and inventive, but get off of my server. Go to a Normal/PvP/RPPvP. Thats exactly what they're there for, so you don't bother those of us with a different style of play. (And note, thats to PLAYERS, not BLIZZARD. *knows someone will be a moron and try to flame me for the wording, it's meant EXACTLY how it's posted.*)

Story-wise, I thought it was great. It could -- should -- have been an interesting and fun world event.

Play-wise, it proved a massive failure on multiple levels. The griefing. The forced PvP on PvE servers. The insane repair costs. The fact that you got abso-fraggin'-lutely NOTHING for all the hell and hassle. As pointed out below, there is no other world event for which players gained NO rewards for their (in this case, forced) participation.

But...! What I found utterly intolerable was the addition of such a incredibly "busy" event on top of an already-known game fault: the new latency issue. The zombies made play almost impossible whenever they showed up. That Blizzard has refunded 3 days of my wasted time helps a bit. However, they still need to FIX whatever problem they created in that patch, because it is still causing problems in battlegrounds and instances.

And before someone snottily hands out the let-them-eat-cake suggestion that I upgrade my system, I will note that tracert hops along quite nicely until it hits LA, then it dies. Blizzard has acknowledged that this is a problem on THEIR end. Correct application of the "7 P's" principle would have helped matters all around.

I agree whole heartily. I was not anti-event. I was anti-griefing. Really, those who would care the most about this event would have been the RPers and the PvEers (not to say PvPers wouldn't have appreciated it, but in general a great majority would be in those two brackets). Yet the event was exclusively rewarding to not PvPers but griefers.

From a gaming perspective there was NO point to the event. There were no rewards for killing zombies. There were no rewards for being zombies. Nothing for cleansing. Nothing for infecting. There was no point to it other than supposedly pissing off people so they'd go after Arthas. Which made no sense because the only people who would really appreciate the "Lets go kill Arthas because of the plague!" mentality were the very people targeted by the griefing and frustrations and forced into a play style they don't like.

Then after a week of constant griefing and a final two days of near hell in capitals we get a forum post that ends it all. Not a series of quests. No roving bands of Argent Dawn riding across the countryside massacring zombies. It was PATHETIC storytelling. As far as lore is concerned and involving us in the story it was downright PATHETIC.

Give an achievement for cleansing/killing zombies/infecting non infected. Give some kind of reward. Give a weapon to fight it. Give us some grand display of the Argent Dawn that gives us who were griefed some big finale "HA! DIE UNDEAD SCUM!" vindication. Don't just end it. Seriously.

We were involved only in the griefing and the only people who really benefited from this event were people who were bored and just wanted to kill stuff aimlessly. As far as the story progressing it was sad. The Scourge Invasion was a redo of the original. The Headless Horseman was a repeat of the same old, same old. The Zombie Invasion was really a half-assed cheap attempt.

The only thing BIG about it was the fact that they designed it so griefers could affect and **** off as many people as possible.

Zombi-fication!!
# Nov 02 2008 at 1:22 PM Rating: Decent
I am one of the people that loved it. The first few days or so i spent helping a few guildies try to take over different cities. Then the last of the week i spent trying to stop the very same people from "controlling" SW. I enjoyed it because it was a chance to stop the normal boredom of dailies or alt leveling. It was something cool to do, that had to do with the wow lore. I understand all you guys that hated it (my boyfriend and his brother included as well as my guild leader). I wish i could say Blizzard should have allowed only the zombie npc's to attack other players, but that would ruin the event.
In my opinion, the point was to show everyone what havoc zombies can cause. Think of the plauged lands you had to level in, think of all the quests you did. Think of the little girl (pamela) told to stay in her home, left alone by her family yet despite it all the entire town was destroyed, ghosts left wandering. We play a game, and most forget there is lore all surronding the game. This was a little snipit, allowing us to "live" thru something like that.
The zombies were removed, now we can play like we always did. I agree the repair costs were terrible. As well as having to wander exodar and avoid stormwind.
All in all it is a game we pay to play. When we log on we are letting blizzard control our game surrondings, seeing as how they are the game. A warning would have been nice, but hey surprise is half the fun :) You could always go play Runescape or something after all

I usually just read through these forums and do not respond. Generally because everything I would say has already been said much better than how I would phrase it, but because of the scale of this event I figure my two cents won't hurt.

I play on a PVP server. I love the server now. When I first started playing, I hated it. Basically because I started so late in the game. So I consider myself somewhat of a professional of taking two steps outside of a camp/town/city and getting killed, nothing new there. I like what Blizz tried to do here. They tried to bring a whole new aspect to the game, and it was a great idea. I think, as many other has stated, that they did not put enough thought into this. The biggest complaint that I heard from most of my guild members on the server was in relation to your lower level zones. I even saw it on this forum mentioned a couple times, and even described with vivid detail from a person who chose to be a Zombie, of ripping through the low level towns on their way to a capital city to hold a bank hostage. I tend to see both sides of the argument and found myself having some sympathy for the people who did not enjoy the event.

The pros:
Running around as a Zombie and speaking to the Alli/Horde factions was fun. It was completely different and unexpected. Being able to stroll into capital cities and take on the elites and 70's who wanted to fight the plague was also fun (the first day). Experiencing game play that will probably not be around for quite some time was great.

The downside:
Large groups of 70s taking hostage of banks, auction house, low level quest turn in points. People who claimed they were living in the "spirit" of the event, but in reality spent their entire day ruining low level players fun.

These were really the only things that I saw that stood out to me. I have several 70s, so it was not a frustration to me; however, a friend of mine who recently started playing again, and hates pvp (and only is on server because of his friends) was unable to get anything accomplished in TM (which is usually bad enough for ganking under normal pvp circumstances). So I loaded my hunter up at first and took a trip down to TM to see, upon landing there was one member of the Horde who felt it funny to infect the entire town. At first I just kept running around killing the NPCs when they turned after killing the player first. The guy rez's and runs straight for a Zombie to turn (wearing no gear of course). I spend a good amount of time doing this in TM, your basic wash, rinse, and repeat sort of thing. I evetually get tired and log off for a while. By now my friend had left the area, disgusted that he was not able to turn anything in because of this. I log on later and decide I want to check out TM, so I decided I would take my Pali down there. I land and the same Horde player is still down there doing the same thing. This time I kill him rather quickly, no joking, no playing, just a few holy shocks, exorcism, and holy wrath and no more player Zombie. I then commit to running around and cleansing all the NPCs that could be cleansed and killed the ones who could not. While killing the left over Zombies, the player tries to get infected again, so I cleanse him. Finally after an entire day of this, the guy leaves TM, and wow, no more Zombie problem. Later in the day, I log on with a Priest I am working on in Hammerfall (I think) and the whole town is infected, and the root of the infection, not mindless NPC Zombies, or Alli/Horde, but the same person who was destroying TM earlier.

I was amazed at the way this had gone on. I understand the concept of the Zombie event, and when I got turned, I played pro-Zombie. Unleashing mangle upon all, but I did not take my Zombie and go infect low level zones where there was no defense. Sure the plague does not care about level, but it also was controlled by mindless Zombies, not well thought out griefers. This was what changed my mind about the plague event and was where I saw there could/should have been some improvements. I do not think raising all players to a level 70 Zombie would have accomplished anything except made for more greif to be handed out. I think the AD healers were a good idea, but why with the rampant plague spreading did we not see cities on alert, raising the number of guards? I also agree, there should have been more relevance to the Zombie event. Something that made people want to participate. I eventually gave up and just would go to places where the infection was not so rampant. For instance Silvermoon City seemed almost untouched by people wanting to be Zombies for some reason. So my auctions would be listed from a toon out of there. I leveled a lower level rogue in Hinterlands as no one seemed to care about infecting that region. So, there were zones you could go to that people did not want to mess with, so the event could not stop your game play, but proved to be a bother because it forced us to go outside where we were comfortable and try something new. So in that, I believe there was success, but I would have enjoyed more had there been some sort of reward system for both Zombies and Zombie fighters.

In closing, I am not sure what the original intent was for this event, If it was to make me mad, it did not work. I found it interesting, but it did not set me wanting to destroy Arthas. Playing a Blood Elf, gives me that incentive, seeings as he destroyed half our town and destroyed our way of life (speaking from Lore standpoint). If it was to frustrate me, it did not succeed as I was able to play my lower level toons, just required me going to zones I usually skip or more to the point don't go to because they are out of the way from where I want to be. It did, however, make me take time out of daily's and battlegrounds to go and look over what was going on and visit some areas I do not usually go to, which in turn sparked my desire to complete some of the achievements which were released with the last patch. So I still give Blizz credit that they did not ruin the game (they may not have accomplished their goals), but they did bring that creative side out and put it on display again and show that they are constantly looking for ways to make the game better. So I think we all need to just sit back and take the event for what it was and realize soon we are all going to be running through Northrend and this will all be behind us..........or will it?

I enjoyed reading your post. Just wanted you to know that. I also rarely even read posts let alone respond to them, but I was so enveloped with my emotions over the Zombie plague that I had to read the article that I saw on the home page ... which brought me to your post.

After reading, I feel that you and I pretty much had the same experience overall with the plague.

The only difference (besides being on a PvE server) was that I was totally against the plague and fought venomously to crush it ... like you said, "(the first day)" ... I did not embrace the zombie infection when I was turned from being human, however ... I role-played for myself that I still had some of my own thoughts in my brain left which allowed me to fight my way to the nearest graveyard to blow myself up, harming noone, and then rezzing, buffing, and back into the fight. Level 70 zombies in Theremore Isle, or in the dwarven village near Loch Modan ... I blew those players up with a vengeance again and again and again. I spent maybe 3 days fighting before I lost interest and just, like you, found places away from the plague to actually play the game.

The Zombee attacks in WOW were fun and a good diversion from the daily grind. Some were not happy about being Zombee'd by a group of attackers for only going into the Inn, but they missed the fun and alignment to the Halloween spirit.
By the end of the week I was running into the inn only to be turned into a Zombee to see how many others I could turn into being a Zombee. It was fun and surprising, something that is hard to obtain in a well structured game (like WOW).

I hope that WOW will do similar events, but I guess they will need to provide sanctuary for some (pun intended).

I loved the event, give me more now! Since the event ended i can dream of nothing else, and wake in uncontrolled laughter and joy. Ahhh the days of gathering fellow guildies, all of us 70s pinging the meeting location on the minimap..."Gather here my brothers and sisters! Dread is upon the land! Let us feeeeeed!!!!!" uncomprehensible zombie battle cries for flesh and brains bellowed over vent. Gathering at the Eastvale lumbercamp away from the do-gooders we diseased or killed everything that moved. "On to Northshire! Stay tight stay in the healing cloud" Low level players running for their lives. Muahahawha! it was the funniest thing watching a L5 male paladin and a L4 female Mage slightly back up, then turn and run inside the abby, we laughed as we realised by their names slightly matched probably some relationship. We chased them into the abby taking them both instantly, she was still running when he turned and swung at us. Did he wonder what she thought about him not being able to protect her? How did he feel about that?...bah maybe nothing. What if this was their "day 1 hour 1" and they thought this is how this game is all the time. Hmm i like to think they stayed...By the time we hit Goldshire we had to start a 2nd raid just with members of our own guild, and we took out goldshire like a high tide takes out sandcastles. The defiant L60-70s charging in, multiple hits turned them instantly into one of us, only to abandon the swarm and be voluntarily cut down by the very ones they chose to defend. It was glorious..Goldshire was on fire from the HHM event...man it was total chaos! We marched strait to Stormwind. "Take out the healers first!! Stay tight!" The argent healer may have lasted 6-7 seconds...maybe. Wished we had tracked the kills and conversions. So many low levels, so many brave higher level players..hehe that T6 pally is definately looking at an instant 6g repair. we learned early that naked 70s seemed the same as geared 70s so we were gung-ho. We hit a hard pocket in the second turn of the gatekeep but managed to hold together, we took a left just after the visitors center. When i say everything up to this point has died or been turned i mean everything. There was 40 in my raid and 28 in the second all tight together, not including a dozen guards, another heaping helping of players that just joined up to be part of it, and any npc that had survived this long and not wandered out of the raid-swarm. We bled into the bank killing everything from the gates to the Innkeepers. We made a controlled retreat into the bank holding it hostage and turning it into our "crypt" Killing our respawned members instantly when they returned, as we did anyone that tried to enter. Noone and i mean noone made it into that bank for a half hour, infact from the outside all you could see was green plague smoke and skeletons on the steps. Boredom killed the zombie raid, we had too many, killed too often and far to easily to be of much more interest, challenge or fun. We slowly bled of eventualy falling victim to a patrolling L80 guard or small 70 band. Those were the days..and i was there. You may not like me right now, but with all that happened... it was different, it was dramatic, it was emotional and you will miss it.

Not every little thing you do merits a reward. You change nothing in this game except your level your possesions and your reputation. You will continue to kill Hogger, little timmy will never age, there will always be orphans, and King Wrynn will always look strung out.
You are not buying a service demanding an outcome, your renting time in a virtual world where you create and advance a character blizzard owns, and you agreed to it. Its fantasy..its not real, and the sooner alot of people snap out of the dreamstate they are in the better. This is not your world, this is the World of Warcraft and the story has already been told, your just reliving it. When you emotionalize a GAME with anger instead of happiness, you get confusion instead of focus. Dont come here to escape your reality expecting it to respond to your reality, its simply not coded for it. Come here expecting nothing by doing something, and if by some very bad luck and circumstance log off empty handed, you have only lost time, you weren't obviously doing anything with it anyways.

Epic fail
# Nov 01 2008 at 11:47 PM Rating: Decent
It could have been a great event but it was not well done. There needed to be some rewards possible. There are no other events in wow in which no money or gear can be attained. I think a single point of Argent Dawn rep for each zombie and some level seventy Argent Dawn gear would have made people a lot happier. The other thing was that it was not possible to attack player zombies in shat because of the no pvp rule. That was idiotic, because you could not even fight the zombies. The event had no balance, felt like it had not been play tested. With no rewards and no way to win it was irrelevant at best. It was not at all well linked to the lich king at all. The story line was very very weak, almost no connection at all. There should have been several quests for a cure, and after that limited immunity to the disease, something with a cooldown so melee dps could fight zombies and not be instantly infected. Then players who didn't like having Stormwind destroyed could do something about it. How low level players could fight level 70 zombies is a problem. Anyway it's over and it was a rare epic fail for Blizzard, hopefully before they do something this major again they will make a little effort.

My only problem with this event is that you have high level zombies attacking safe cities/zones where my baby toons were playing...send a 70 against a 20, gee...what fun that was. Next time maybe scale the invaders to be a challenge to the targeted baby toons, not instant death.

The article was interesting but seemed to imply that players either liked it or didn't. I was one of those players that liked it in moderation. The idea was a good one but it bombed due to Blizzard's lack of foresight. They basically gave a bunch of kids a loaded gun and told them to have fun. They should not be surprised at the trouble that would ensue.

I read some comments in-game and here that stated people should stop their whining because it is part of the storyline. That statement is nothing more but an excuse for bad behavior. If it was all for the storyline tell me what part of the storyline has players asking to become zombies or those who do get infected complaining if they're healed? Zombies are mindless creatures who have no concept that they are infecting others and yet in the game we had players plotting to kill npcs in the AH out of some sick desire to create trouble. Blizzard should have set certain limits like if you turn into a zombie you cannot become infected for another hour. This could add to the storyline and yet do so in a moderated way so as not to encourage bad playing.

If pvp is so great why are these players on a pve server to begin with? They can do the same thing constantly on a pvp server, but they probably had done that already and decided it was way too frustrating to enjoy and left. Another thing that is ridiculous is they want to wreck your game play but they don't think you should complain about it. It's like they want their cake and eat it too, but kids it doesn't work that way!

Final comment to Blizzard: In the future any guns you give to kids please make sure they are only water pistols!

The vast majority of the complaints have been rooted in sound logic and reason and although you may not agree, the complaints are hardly reminiscent of the crying and complaining of a child. Calling those opposed to the event children doesn't automatically trump or invalidate their complaints although it does call into question your own integrity and ability to accept criticism.

First off, I will say some things COULD have been better with the even. Such as certain NPCs being immune, and any zombified instantly "becoming" level 70, with set stats, so all are equal.

Agreed.

Quote:
...As stated before, the whole POINT of the Zombie Invasion was to make you feel the same way the characters in WC3 and WC3FT "felt". You can see Blizzard succeeded in what they were going for just by reading this forum. They WERE trying to make you mad. If you can't handle an evolving, realistic (very loosely applied term, as you don't see dragons flying around, or great big elementals) then GTFO, go play some Oblivion or something.

And as I've stated time and time again intentionally pissing off your players is idiotic business practice. "Go take out your frustrations on Arthas in Lich King!" That whole line of reasoning works great for those totally immersed in the game with little or no ability to separate it from reality but for those of us who come home after a long day looking forward to spending a few hours to play and spending our hard earned money getting griefed for hours on end...doesn't work.

Quote:
Be imaginative for a moment. If a plague such as this were ever to occur in REAL LIFE, what do you think would happen? You wouldn't be able to say "No, I don't want to participate! You can't turn me into a zombie now! Ha!" You WOULD be forced, whether you like it or not! If your life was disrupted by hordes of zombies killing off everything, what do you think you would do if you couldn't log out? You'd either A. Run and Hide or B. Stand and Fight. Those are pretty much your only choices.

Your reality card doesn't hold much ground. If this were a REAL plague you wouldn't see fellow citizens intentionally getting infected then running through our malls, schools, and grocery stores trying to get as many people infected as possible. Dying. Then coming back to life and whining at the CDC for killing them. Reinfecting themselves and doing it all over again.

Taking into the game world, you still wouldn't see large quantities of citizens intentionally infecting themselves. It made no sense having crates sitting around in cities for days that were obviously the source (especially after the first 200 people getting infected instantly from touching them).

Those who intentionally spread the plague would have been burnt on a stake outside the city gates and their corpses still hanging there as a warning to anyone else who dared think of killing fellow players.

The event also wouldn't have instantly ended with a forum post.

Quote:
How would you feel if someone INTENTIONALLY unleashed it on the world? I would be FURIOUS, and I would want to kill the @$$ who did it. Wouldn't you?

Things WOULD get bad, you WOULDN'T be able to go into towns, for fear of catching the disease.

See previous two statements

Quote:

Oh, and to people whining about not being able to level:

During the course of the event, I leveled my Draenei Shaman from 62-67 In Zangarmarsh and Terokkar Forest. Seeing as these areas are close to Shattrath, they too were being overrun by zombies. Yet was STILL possible to level. The game wasn't at all unplayable (unless you were low leveled and higher levels were being @$$es (back to the insta-70 and set stats), or had no wits about you).

On most realms Outland was nearly completely unaffected outside of Shattrath. In most realms 99% of the griefing occured in areas level 30 and lower. An intelligent level 60+ could combat a zombie. However a level 12 no matter how geared or how intelligent could not kill a level 70 zombie if their very life depended on it.

Again, your statement holds little or no weight. Most of the players who have submitted complaints have already mentioned in vast numbers the ones who were affected the most were those under level 30. Most areas 30 and higher saw little or no signs of the plague.

Once again addressing the issue that this all powerful zombie making plague was intentinoally targeted at players who had no chance of doing anything about it.

Quote:
Although it DID force you to participate, doesn't the game FORCE you to level up? To get better gear? And to finish off that pesky enemy you're fighting? It is (was) just a part of the game and for now it's over. It's in the past, so just enjoy the game.

There is a difference between spending two hours corpse walking and spending two hours leveling. There is a difference between walking two steps, dying, guard killing you, corpse walking, two steps, dying, etc and getting better gear.

I dare say that if you started playing in the middle of this event you wouldn't be continuing your subscription. Its very easy to say "Well I have five level 70s and I leveled from 62 to 67 so there isn't any problem for anyone". That's a very narrow minded view point. But when you spent every evening incapable of doing more than being the grief target of a bunch of level 70s in westfall you wouldn't classify that as OKAY or FUN or EXCITING. And there was for those players absolutely no possible way to "just enjoy it while it lasted".

Since although YOU could play I know of many players on my realm who were completely incapable of doing anything for the duration of the zombie event and Blizzard's only response has been "have fun. we pissed you off on purpose to make you excited about buying another product of ours".

I'm sorry, but that's just purely idiotic.

What a lot of you are missing is THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!! Blizz created this loathsome Zombie Plague to cause the reaction most of you are feeling. You are supposed to hate the zombies, you are supposed to get mad. It's part of the game! The Lich King is coming! See the "awesome power" of the Lich King! Now you have a reason to hate him, now you have a reason to attack Northrend. Blizz has now set it up for almost anything. Are the zombies just the first phase? Will there be more? Who knows, but it's one of the reasons I play this game, the constant addition of excellent material and new game challenges.

So some players got out of control and "zombified" everything and everyone....that's the point. Blizz knows people are going to do just that, what better way to renew the Horde/Alliance feud?

I for one am glad that Blizzard put so much thought and time into the Zombie Plague, I loved it.

That was a large part of the problem, at least for me: I DON'T hate the Lich King. I have absolutely NO feelings towards him at all after this event.

The people who made me the angriest during the event were NOT members of the opposite faction. They were griefers from my OWN faction. If the goal of this event was to renew the animosity between Horde and Alliance, or to create a new shared menace which could force both factions to put aside their grievances, then it failed miserably.

I somehow highly doubt that Blizzard anticipated that so many of its paying customers would suddenly, after this event, LOATH the game designers at Blizzard. This even made me take a serious look at what it was that I DID like about WoW. And this event was not it.

I got so fed up with it and jumped to another mmo until the stupidity was over...Id check back in every couple of days and in 1 min of city chat i could tell if it was over or not...id log back out and go someplace that i could REALLY play. I felt that what was happening was intentional rape sanctioned by blizz. I lived thru that and survived it in RL...I have no need to pay someone to let it happen again! If this is what lich king is going to do when i buy it and install it, i may have to decide if i want to spend money, buy an expansion, and pay every month to live thru that hell again! rape is never fun...except for the stupid twisted rapist! I'd also like to point out that the Scourge are a common enemy of both the Alliance and the Horde. It makes no sense that a Scourge invasion would renew any feud. If anything it would have bolstered a united peace between the two. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend..."

*As others have already posted, I play on a normal server for a reason. I tried pvp when I first got into online gaming, back when the first muds came out; I found I didn't like it, to I didn't do it. I resented my game time coming to a halt to a point where I didn't just put in a ticket, I called em directly. My first forced participation was in darkshire on my priest who is about 28 or so now. I was attacked, automatically turned into a zombie and flagged all in the same second, no chance to try to block it. I try to get cured of it and I get killed by the AD healer. Now someone pls try to explain how I would find that fun, especially when it was happening multiple times?*

<snip>

Exactly. I LOVE the Wow game, but the mixture of world pvp abuse, and poor conduct by a growing majority of players has soured me on the whole retail experience. I am fairly sure that the bad behavior, and general disregard for other player's gaming experience will continue, mainly because various documentation and interviews I've read by Blizz employees, lead me to believe that, although insanely talented, the Blizzard game designers as a whole are the type of people who LIKE the idea of node stealing, corpse camping, using various cheezy tricks to get PVE players to accidently flagg themselves while trying to quest, etc...

This year's Halloween event is yet another example of an Idea with enormous potential, being implemented poorly, in such a way that people who DIDN'T want to participate were crammed into it. Some people undoubtly loved it. These people are probably the same type who like to squash low level players, trick people into getting flagged, etc... Basically the type of people who have wrecked Wow.

In the recent words of my Wife, just after one of the above experiences, she said: "I can't believe I'm PAYING for this kind of abuse." She closed her account, which included multiple 70's, and intends forget about Wow forever now. I don't blame her for her decision and have done the same.

WoW: and amazingly awsome game gone bad.

As others have already posted, I play on a normal server for a reason. Now someone pls try to explain how I would find that fun, especially when it was happening multiple times? I get challenged to duel alot, and most of the ppl doing it understand that when I decline it, that I don't want pvp; and I am fine with that. But as has been mentioned previously, there are those who think that pvp is a must do on any server regardless of it's status, and these individuals have kept at it... 5 of these idiots I am sure have a macro set to keep the challenge going until their victim accepts it. I of course reported these idiots, yet so far as I know nothing has been done.

I have no problem with the basic idea behind pvp being an option, I just want a way to not have to be prodded/poked/smothered by it. I have yet to find a way to set a flag that will deny automatically any duels sent my way; I don't like it, and I will not accept being forced into doing it just because someone else does like it. Anyone who has paid for the game and the expansions and played it for any basic length of time has every right to play the game world for everything that it offers that is of interest to them; all I am saying is that while I am respecting your choices of participation, I feel I have the right to believe that you will be respecting mine.

I further agree that this event could have been done better by restricting it to the play areas of those lvls that are affected by it, or scaling down the effects to reflect the lvl differences alot better. The other suggestions that have been made by others already cover pretty much everything else, so there is no need to repeat them here.
Zombie event

The big issue that troubled me was that Shatt still remained a sanctuary for the players who turned into zombies. This meant they were able to run around taking out all the NPCs they wanted and have them mob everyone while we were left with the only choices of leaving the city, becoming a zombie, or killing all the npc zombies. If you choose the third option then once you had killed the mass of zombies the npcs would respawn only to be instantly be turned into zombies again by players camping their spawn points. If you decided to leave then the only point of safety was way out in the wilderness since most towns were crawling with tons of zombies too. You couldn't even go to the Isle to do dailies there as people went out of their way to infect the mobs that needed to be killed for them. Need to free some murlocs, tough luck, they're zombies; need some dawnblade dead, nope they're zombies too. Just want to get razorthorn root, sorry all the flayers are zombies too. People went out of their way to target quest givers and quest objectives so they could get enjoyment not from the zombie event, but from the fact they could ruin the game for people just trying to play. At one point I couldn't even fly from one place to another without being turned into a zombie since people were standing there waiting for people to land. Instead of making certain people immune Blizzard should've just set up small areas in certain places, (flight masters, innkeepers, banks, and auction houses where the zombies could not enter. That way you could still play and retain the functionality of these places without having wave after wave of zombie come in and overwhelm the Argent Dawn healers so that the only cure now comes from a player
Zombie event

It seems like every post here has been anti-event. Personally, I found the whole thing an exhilarating experience. To be playing a game where the environment was changing day by day was amazing and made the playing experience so immersive.

I'm struggling to understand why everyone is making out like it was impossible to do anything for the duration of this event. A few flight masters and quest givers getting killed briefly was not so much that it made the game unplayable. Getting killed by a higher level zombie player was not such a big deal either - how is that any different than getting killed by a higher level mob anywhere in Azeroth? All this event did was bring some fighting into the cities.

As for the argument of "I couldn't play the game that I'm paying to play" - well, what do you think you're paying for? You're paying to play in a living, breathing game that evolves and changes. This event, or indeed any changes, new items, new quests etc that Blizzard introduces, are exactly the things that we are paying for. Otherwise, it would be a one-off payment to play a game that stays the same all of the time.

And as for "playing in an enjoyable way", that's quite subjective. How you couldn't enjoy watching and being part of a zombie invasion is beyond me, but if you enjoy, say, questing, why not res at the graveyard and leg it to the next nearest quest-giver. That town's infected too? Then keep going until you find one that's not. You're turning finding a quest into a quest itself.

The participation issue I can empathise with. It would definitely have improved participation if everyone turned into a level 70 zombie when infected. As a level 70 myself, I didn't encounter this problem, but I did find that there tended to be plenty of other zombies about, and you could quite easily get yourself into a gang of NPC zombies and let them take most of the aggro, which was key to survival as a zombie. If a similar event occurs in the future, it would be good to see more opportunity for lower levels to participate on a level playing field.

I think that too many people fundamentally dislike change. Everyone feels like they should be able to play the game in the way that they want to, which is fair. When I turn on GTA4, I want to be able to cause a 20 car pile up and blow it up with a rocket launcher. However, with the nature of MMORPGs, it's not just your game. If GTA4 was the same, I shouldn't complain because I log on and find that someones already had the rocket launcher and another player has run me over in one of the cars that I've parked in the middle of the road - that's the point of these types of games. My point is, if you've got a bee in your bonnet because something in the MMORPG has changed not to your liking, then maybe these types of games aren't for you. Either accept it, or find another type of game to play. Complaining about an event in an MMORPG is like complaining about getting wet when you go swimming. Events are an intrinsic part of MMORPGs.

Embrace these events people! Stuff like this is exactly why we play this type of game! So what if the game was difficult to play for a few days? Bring it on! I want to see what would happen if Stormwind got levelled to the ground, or if Varimathras and Lady Sylvanas announced their engagement, or if the Alliance found a way to cure undead and convert them to humans, or whatever. It's more than just a game, it's a story, and I'm glad to be playing a part in it.
