FFXI to Receive HD Graphics Overhaul

One of our readers sent in this gem: A magazine scan announcing an HD graphics upgrade for Final Fantasy XI!  Adventurers will be able to traverse Vana'diel on a number of new platforms, including PS3 and Nintendo Wii.  There's also a short blurb about "hikky," a Japanese term for shut-ins who play online too much.  No need to translate that as our users are all such socially well-adjusted people here on ZAM.

I picked up Famitsu this morning, but apparently this article is from a different magazine.  I'll keep my eyes out and update you when more information becomes available.

I'm sad because the day I actually read this is April 2nd. NOT april fool's day. So I was extra fooled. And now I'm sad. Because my PS2 is on the fritz, so to be able to play on my PS3 would be amazing.

Eh? The screenshots look exactly like regular FFXI to me.

April Fools

Here is a small article from USA Today. having to do with some April Fools jokes.

Starbucks, knowing no bounds, has introduced a new beverage size, the Plenta, which rivals a bucket of chicken and takes two hands to hold.

Conceding that it might be a huge headache for municipal dump sites, th eSeattle-based company suggests re-purposing as a rain hat, lampshade or yoga block.

Or, you can just try out their new tiny Micra -- also issued on April Fools' day -- that could serve afterwards as a soft boiled egg cup or paper clip holder.

If you buy that, you'll also probably believe that Google's announcement that it has changed its name to Topeka.

Or take a look of possibilities opened up by a new app for the Nokia N900 that allows ground-based cellphones users to control a helicopter. (Not recommended for use after downing a Plenta.)

The spoofs, however, pale beside offerings in Britain, where April Fools' Day is a cottage industry.

Google's British home page, for example, announces a new service, Google Animal Translate, promising to let you know exactly what your pet is thinking.

The British press, as usual, weighs in heavily:

The Sun reports it has developed the world's first flavored newspaper page and invited readers to lick a square of newsprint "to reveal a hidden taste." Just below the spot to be licked was the fine-print warning: "May contain nuts."

The Daily Telegraph says an Internet service provider plans to use tunneling ferrets to deliver broadband services to remote areas.

BBC radio's Today program ran an item claiming William Shakespeare's mother was French.

So far, none have reached the heights hit by the BBC news program Panorama in 1957 that aired a story on the unusually bountiful spaghetti harvest that year in southern Switzerland.

Straight-faced and convincing, the Associated Press (really!) calls it a classic April Fools hoax.

PS3 version I would have fallen for... it's after all possible on SOME PS3 with PS2BC, SquareEnix has been re-releasing FF7&8 and a considerable amount of PS2 players (mostly JP) had to convert to a PC or 360 when their PS2 died...

A PS3 version might even been partially funded by Sony...

What, no Hello Kitty Online this year?

Or unveiling the tier 5 VNM- Krabcake, a giant crab with a 3 layer cake on its back, or Queen Behemoth, with pink skin, a magenta mane, and lipstick on its snarling lips, or the Headless Hydra, a lol-hydra walking around with no heads.
Now it's gonna happen.

In before SE releasing a graphics upgrade sometime in the future just because zanier crap used as April Fools fodder has actually happened (I'm looking at you, level 99!).

More like knowing for a fact that it's already hogwash, than being lazy. FFXI related April Fools might fool people outside of FFXI, but it doesn't us.. not most of us anyway.

Pretty much that, yeah. That and posting it at midnight/close to midnight. That the Wii would be incapable of running regular FFXI(due of course to lack of a hard drive), let alone an 'HD' version(lack of power), kills a lot of potential for this to catch anyone.

Not to mention Nintendo's online policy makes MMOs basically impossible anyway.
