Gamescom Interview - Details on the Open Beta

What's going to change for the Open Beta?

4Gamer sat with Final Fantasy XIV developers Hiromichi Tanaka, Nobuaki Komoto and Sage Sundi to discuss the big changes coming for the open beta.  Check out the details below:

Source: 4Gamer.net

  • Many players are still requesting faster battles and quicker action, and the developers are working on fulfilling their wishes.
  • So far, players are very happy with the ease of solo play.  In FFXI, players complained they couldn't get parties, but in FFXIV, they don't even mind not joining one.
  • New types of Guildleve quests will open up for players as they increase in level.
  • The open beta phase will last about 2-3 weeks.  Tanaka believes they will be able to handle several hundred thousand players.
  • The game currently has 10 servers, with more possibly planned for when service begins in September.
  • The distance between each city-state is very far, allowing players to really explore the vast landscape of Eorzea for the first time.  Getting to and from Limsa-Lominsa will require access to a ship.
  • Once the open beta is complete, all data will be deleted. However the developers are hoping to allow players to retain their names for the release version.
  • The game has been designed in a way that players cannot monopolize certain monsters in an area.
  • A new version of the benchmark software is under development.

So everybody wouldnt care about making party? i dont think so unless conceptor would be really dumb, all solo thing work just fine in an all PvP game, i find it boring and sensless but a lot of peeps get hook on, but the thing is if there is no party/community and no PvP, well there is nothing left.

I mean there is really no point of making a MMOrpg with no interaction between players. What the other players would be there for?

Thx for reassuring me, i was commenting the main article that
Litteraly says "but in FFXIV, they don't even mind not joining one."

Quite shocking and disapointing if you would believe that, my post was to point out that if that would be trully the case there would be no point of making it a MMORPG if youre going to play alone in your corner like a loner

Party vs Solo
# Aug 19 2010 at 4:31 PM Rating: Decent
Before they go off about people not grouping maybe let the game go live, its still beta and closed beta at that. Everyone is running around looking at all the new stuff and things to do. Let the game go live and give it a little while. I really liked FFXI but at higher levels (above 20 or so) you almost had to have a party. I like the idea of being able to solo, not to the point of WoW but it should be possible. Definitely give bonus for group but I don't want another FFXI where party play wasn't optional it was absolute.

I would like to see incentives to grouping, yes I understand this is not XI but I don't think the same level of community can be achieved without a focus on grouping

i like that solo play is better than in 11. partying in 11 was sometime horrible if you played a job ppl didnt think was useful and sometimes you'd get a party that once the leader lvled hed break it and take off. but i still hope that forming a party will still be needed just not as much as in 11

some ppl might disagree to the difficulty of getting a party in 11 but those are the ppl who probably had a big linkshell or alot of frineds to pull from or a job like red mage or bard that everyone wanted
benchmark better work

as for parties, i believe part of the success for XI for me was the fact you had to work together with people. it didn't allow you to be a ****** (there is a clear difference between ****** and new.. you can work with new but you cant fix ******) because if you were then people wouldn't take you.. and the failure of WoW was that you really had no benifit to a party to exp with a few exceptions... i like having to party it allows you to see how effective certian setups can be that would otherwise not be good for soloing. soloing is boreing, redundant and monotonous.

i just want the new benchmark to work. i could never get the first one to run properly. it would just shutdown and windows would try to give me some bs about it looking for a solution. i'm still waiting. i want to see how my build works with 2x 1gig graphics cards and an i7 processor.

Amen. If people want forced party play all the time they should check out this cool little game on the market, it's called FFXI.

People are not bothering to get parties? Why are they bothering to even play an MMORPG then? I could just turn on my PS2 and play some RPGs if I wanted to play alone.

New benchmark might alleviate some concern when it comes to peoples current scores. Perhaps it you are able to select the different city states.

I like this!

Faster battles/Quicker action - I think the pace is good even now, but if it makes the game more fun for everyone else, I'm all for it!

Solo vs. Group - I really like the fact that the game is playable solo, but I also would like grouping to have slightly better benefits to make up for the time and effort of forming a good group.

New Guildleves - I think I'll love the guildleve system so more guildleves is sweet.

Open Beta will be 2-3 weeks - So, that gives us an approximate date when open beta starts...so maybe it'll start around the beginning of September?

Long distance between city-states - I think having a realistic distance between them just adds to the epicness factor.

Saving names from open beta - This would be great, though it's highly unlikely someone will have my planned first AND last name already taken.

Can't monopolize "certain monsters" - Remember HNM camping, anyone?

New Benchmark - I guess they heard about the current benchmark not being so accurate?
Yay!

Yep, I'm thinking end of August or a little after will be open beta. I guess we don't really have to be that worried about the beta key delay. . .

Great news, great news, I'm getting real excited now, like when I first heard of FFXIV.
Yay!

I can't wait to try the new benchmark. I did have a problem running the current one but that was easily fixed by reinstalling my directX and updateing. I'm curious to see how my low/high res scores will change if at all.

EDIT: ok, here's a stupid question but what's a 'open' beta mean???? ^.^;;;
