A Buyer's Guide to League of Legends: Urgot!
This time around, we checked out the incredibly aggressive Urgot, champion of early lane pressure!
Unfortunately, where most Urgot players (and I) ended up running into problems is really near the mid to late game of League of Legends, when Urgot's poor scaling and low range come back to haunt him. In my first game as Urgot, I ended up grabbing a pile of kills (around eight) within the first ten to fifteen minutes, but unlike my caster-carry champions (Annie, Annivia, Morgana), who can transform a lead like that into some overwhelming damage, I could only barely keep up with damage, and it felt like I needed more kills just to keep up, damage wise, with the other powerful damage dealers.
Many Urgot players have surmounted this problem fairly easily by building Urgot as a high damage dealer early in the game, and then transitioning to becoming a "tank" sort of champion at the later stages. Unfortunately, as any player will tell you, League of Legends tends to reward those who build "pure" builds (as in, straight damage forever, or straight tanking items forever), rather than those who sample a little bit of everything. In this way, Urgot unfortunately suffers from what many are calling a "meta-game" problem, as top League of Legends players will simply choose to make a "pure" tank who can control the flow of the battle (Shen, Galio and Amumu are great examples of this), and then supplement themselves with powerful damage dealing champions, like Katarina, Annie or Tristana. Sadly, in a meta-game that focuses almost entirely on "blow everything up as fast as possible," the potential for an off-tank diminishes because even the hardiest of tanks will find themselves wilting under the incredible firepower of a well-built Gangplank.
In the end, however, don't let these identity problems inhibit you if you happen to be a big fan of lane dominance and early pressure. Urgot certainly does reward players who are capable of playing aggressively, and his later game defensive presence can be a powerful asset for any team. I believe that Urgot's position swap ultimate could certainly use a lot more range (I remember VS having a massive range on her position swapping ultimate!) so that he doesn't have to run very close to his opponents in order to swap, but for those of you who really want a champion with a strong lane presence, then Urgot may very well be the champion for you.
