Making the Most of Your Low-Level Summoner
With more and more players getting into League of Legends, Senior Staff Writer Chris "Pwyff" Tom went back to being a level 1 summoner to experience it all again.
Take Your Time:
Nothing's worse than "grinding" at a game to get somewhere, but not enjoying the journey on the way. This is true for almost any MMORPG out there, and it's especially true in League of Legends. With each game you play, try to see if you can do something new, or learn something new. When I play ranked games, I like to win as much as anyone else, but in regular games with friends, I'll often play with the intention of using a unique build, or I'll try my hand at a role I tend to avoid.
In low level games, if you set out to have fun with each game, and you don't make it a priority to hit the level cap, you'll find that League of Legends is, simply put, a fun game at any level. In the old days, DotA had no stat tracking systems, no persistent levels, runes, masteries or summoner spells, and still millions (myself included) of players logged in every day to squeeze in a few fun games.
While MMORPGs have raised us with the idea that "the best fun is at the top," remember that low level games in League of Legends aren't so much restricted versions of higher level games as they are uniquely different games altogether. In low level games versus high level games, champion viability is actually very different, just because you don't have access to the masteries, runes and summoner spells that supplement any deficient attributes. Try playing your favourite mage champion at level 30 with a full rune page and mastery tree versus playing a mage champion at level 1, and you'll see how different it is.
As I've said before, with Season Two on the way and a whole plethora of new additions coming to League of Legends, now is probably one of the best times to check out League of Legends. And for you summoners who are running seven rune pages and own every champion you want, maybe you should try playing a low level account for a refreshing change of pace. Sometimes it's just fun to play some free rotation champions in a game where heal is a valid summoner spell, and nobody accidentally chooses their AP rune page for a jungler.
