ZAM at PAX: Hands-On Firefall Preview

Director of Content Cody Bye got his hands on Firefall at PAX Prime and was excited by what this free-to-play title offers both MMO and FPS fans.

With my new piece of loot added to my collection, Kern urged me to try my hand at a PvP match. Even though I'm a causal FPSer, it was still very easy to tell that these PvP matches were exactly what you might find in any modern day first-person shooter. Players from the other team (my own team was slaughtered frequently), did an excellent job using team tactics sending their assaults to draw out the opposing team then allowing their recon battleframes to snipe them down from afar. Medics would stand in the back healing up the assault battleframe that got shot up, and thus very quickly the tides were turned and my team was annihilated.

However, it was easy to see just how complex PvP matches could become. With the addition of different abilities to each battleframe, especially those that altered the movement of a character, some very different strategies were readily apparent. My assault battleframe was definitely trying his best to get as high as possible in the PvP map just so he would one shot a lonely recon battleframe who happened to be ignoring things dropping on him from above. The ability to fly adds so much depth to the game beyond what you'd see in a traditional FPS title that it could truly bring a novelty to the game that attracts a horde of FPS gamers.

Other things of note that I saw in my hands-on time with the game.

  • Resource gathering will be a major activity in PvE, but will include a ton of monster fighting.
  • Players are able to switch out battleframes at any time as long as they're near an appropriate terminal.
  • Each battleframe will level up independently and have its own gear that you swap in/out.
  • Players hold two weapons at a time that are easily switched between.
  • Snipers are still obnoxious, especially good ones.
  • Players start with relatively basic (but brightly colored) battleframe but can buy more complex patterns/outfits.
  • Team play is definitely a good thing to have in PvP matches.
  • Crafting is a part of the game with lots of crafting items dropping that are usable.
  • Looks fantastic and definitely has a “crisp” feel.

Without a doubt, this was one of the most surprising and satisfying games I played at the show. Fans of both MMOs and FPS games will find things they love in Firefall, and – if all goes accordingly – neither will have many complaints about the “newness” that the other genre brings to the traditional gameplay modes.

Great article. Nice balance of discription between Pve and PvP aspects of the game, and you did a great job capturing both. Nice attention to new ideas and spects that make the game truly remarkable. The game itself always sounds amazing when other people describe it and I can;t wait to try it out myself. Would like to know even though you are a casual gamer, what was your favorite aspect to the game?

Im hoping the ladders are done well, and are based on by a random groups that are put together from a pool, but instead based on teams. Each character should be able to have several teams that they are on, so that they can help figure out the individual skill they have, and how they best contribute to a team.

I think Im going to want to play medic the most because I think being able to be a lookout is important. I've been practicing with it in Team Fortress 2. = )

This is the second time I have heard crafting mentioned, lots of people asked for it on the forums but the devs never responded with a yes or a no so its pretty cool to hear an answer coming out of PAX. Its great seeing all these positive reviews coming out of PAX about Firefall, really shows that they put together a quality game that thousands of people will enjoy. I cannot wait for my shot at playing it.

I've been tracking this one since pax 2010, I had the good fortune of playing a ton of the game at this year's pax, and am really looking forward to this game when it comes out. flying above people and slamming into them never gets old :)

The game play you described was sweet. I have always had my reservations about FireFall but I just can not find any bad feed on this game. It is as if Mark Kern came out of the woods and started selling the new drug in town lolz. At any rate I hope this gets out to more people as the game moves forward to its December release and we can all frag our socks off ;)

Like warstratigier, I've followed this game for a while, but this is the first mention I've heard of crafting. If there's any more info about that, I'd love to hear it.

Specifically though, I've played Global Agenda, another FPS MMO, and the guns shoot a very slow laser bullet which requires a ton of lead even at close ranges.

Are the guns in Firefall mostly hitscan? Or close enough to it, a la Bad Company 2? That sort of thing isnt super obvious in vidoes, but you can tell immediately when you are playing with it.

Like the fact that you picked up the game so fast. They really did a stellar job on the controls and making them obvious for starters. Easy game to pick up (as a F2P should be), but hard to master (they want this to become an e-sport).

Be sure to keep an eye out for this game, beta should be launching soon-ish ;-).

I've been following firefall since last year's pax prime it has been great seeing the huge difference between the demo the devs showed last year to the game play showed this year. It seems they have lived up to everything they had said so far. I'm really looking forward to this game and I hope I have chance to get my hands on it sometime soon.

Also I just wanted to point out that while snipers may be obnoxious the only class they can one shot is another recon with a head shot. Even with that I still feel like they are going to be a pain, but it should help.
Firefall looks amazing

This is a really good preview. Firefall looks really awesome, I can't wait to get my hands on it. The Firefall closed beta starts at the end of this week by the way ;).
Jetpacks look really nice in this game. I've heard from several people at PAX that firefall plays really fun and smooth, so I'll definately try it out.
Not just an FPS

Excellent write up, thanks for sharing your experience! I haven't been this excited for a game in years.

One thing that I noticed is that you referred to Firefall as a FPS. It's important to note that you can seamlessly switch between First and Third person perspectives, so the game caters to people who enjoy both game types :)

Good preview, I liked that "other things I noted" you did. Great to see that you enjoyed the game :) I hope I'll get my hands on it ASAP

I'm always interested in hearing gameplay elements I've never heard before. I've heard of crafting in this game from some Firefall community members, but this is the first article I've read that made mention of it. There's also been various accounts of details on some mods as well, enough to wonder just how many different mods are out there. Sounds like so many. I'm quite curious about the ability that was used to ram enemies, it sounds like the ability Afterburner. If so, I've heard you can use it for a nice boost in the air and that even more skillful people can use it to make the dropping ability, Crater, much more potent. Now that'd be something I'd like to see.
This is just the beginning for Firefall!

Great article. I think that the guys at Red5 are doing a great job advertising the game. Without any massive marketing campaign they already have hundreds of thousands of gamers waiting for the beta to be released in the next few days and eager to try the game for themselves (most of us could not go to PAX this year and there are only a very few videos or reviews available until now). Mouth-to-mouth advertisement is doing a great job for them at the moment, but I think this will change as release date approaches; they've already stated they want us to play Firefall for many years, this is not going to be another UT or Quake, but a game that is going to expand continuously... so I expect the popularity of the game to grow at the same time. Firefall will possibly be one of the most popular games in the next few years.

Also, I hope there's much more to do in the open world than resource gathering. Firefall will grown significantly after game release in December and they've already announced there will be PVP in the open world (including territory control) at some stage after game release, so this is just the beginning. Using the open world just for resource gathering and a few quest would not be very wise considering the potential this game has; I hope to see more MMO in the future.

@Manuito - Yeah, I never meant to give the impression that resource gathering was the only thing people could do, that was just a "focal point" of what Mark was talking about.

@mcgrif - A lot of people were in your boat.
Wonderful

Previous to now I'd heard little of this game. What seems to be most attractive is the slick art style, and fighting robots! Enjoyed the writeup throughout. I am becoming hopeful for the success of this game.
