Valve Announces Linux-Based SteamOS

Steam will soon have its own operating system you can stream to and more.

Valve had left us with only this teaser page over the weekend alluding to today's announcement. They have now revealed Steam OS, which will combine Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.

As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself. SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

Four major features which will be available soon in both SteamOS and the Steam client include:

  • In-home Streaming: Play your PC and Mac games by streaming to your SteamOS machine!
  • Music, TV, and Movies: Valve is working to bring media services to both Steam and SteamOS.
  • Family Sharing: Share games easily with the Family Sharing program.
  • Family options: Have control over which Steam titles can be seen by whom!

SteamOS will soon be available as a free download. The next Valve announcement will be at 10am PDT on Wednesday, September 25. Keep your browsers locked to ZAM for more information!
