GOG.com Starts to Sell DRM-Free Movies
If you're a fan of documentaries, gaming or both, this is just the spot for you.
Not in the mood to play a game or watch one on Twitch?
Grab some popcorn – or a keyboard-friendly snack of choice – and head to the new GOG.com movie portal. They've started to offer DRM-free movies at a decent price point. The catalog starts with 21 titles: 19 are $5.99, two are free, and one (a special edition) is $7.99. Most movies will stick at that $6 price, and will be the main price going forward.
"Our goal is to offer you cinema classics as well as some all-time favorite TV series with no DRM whatsoever, for you to download and keep on your hard drive or stream online whenever you feel like it."
Here are a couple points they mention about their new offerings:
- Most movies are 1080p; some are 720p. They also offer 576p versions if you so choose.
- Since GOG.com is "famous for its bonus goodies," they'll try to include as many as possible.
- New releases will be coming "each week," apparently!
Valve also offers movies through Steam, but only a handful so far. Rumor has it they're gearing up for a bigger multimedia push – but that's yet to be seen. In any case, the trend of offering a wider array of game-related entertainment is not unwelcome.
Movies we'd like to see in GOG.com's selection:
- Free to Play (2014): Valve's own creation, a free documentary on Dota 2 and eSports.
- King of Kong (2008): A classic gaming documentary on a classic arcade game.
