question

question:

last july, i deleted my char before unsubscribing from POL. Will i be able to recover that char? Its a 50NIN/WAR, and it would be great if I could get that char back.

When reviving a character, will you be able to choose a new realm/server or will you character relive in the one you left in the first place?

Well, I went to boot camp to join the military, and had to cancel my account beforehand. I didn't get my computer and/or an Internet connection until 5 months later, so I was basically screwed.

Finally, I had everything set up and decided to just re-register with a new account and start over. Then I found out that you can't use your old PoL registration codes. I got screwed again.

That's why I'm glad they're doing this, however cheap a tactic it is.

I've ran my own servers for several different online games, though I haven't set one up for FFXI, and this sounds like at least to me a mess up. Generally when doing maintnence of servers a back up is created for obvisous reasons. Once maintence is complete and tested to ensure all files are compiled and synched up then back up is deleted evenutally. But I could image someone finding an old back up files copied into the servers files or somewhere and extract the player log files to make these characters availible..... OR they planned it due to WoW coming out and saved these files delibertly.

I told a guy in my LS (who knows a few others like him) who deleted his char and who was very exicted when I told him about this program.

He's a high level RNG who was scared he'd have to do it all again...and even though he's started a new char with the old name...he's thrilled at the prospect of being his awesome self again (less work even though he has to re-buy/re-quest a lot of his old equipment).

And yes, I can confirm that this program is for people who left FFXI for WoW and found that it quickly became boring (as my RNG friend found). Almost all my pals who left FFXI "permanently" and then showed up a month later with a new character in FFXI were playing WoW and got bored and returned to find that their characters had been cancelled too long/their POL was cancelled.

So yes, this is for them...and there're several people like this who I know so it's definitely a good idea -- and if their jubiliant responses to my giving them the POL site link are any indication, they're glad to be coming back.

I had a character last year ith whom I had completed all the "Front end" crap to get to the actual game, leveled various jobs, amassed quite a bit of gil, etc. It got cancelled.

I recently restarted and just now made it through the front end crap, have no advanced jobs, etc. So basically, if I can restart my old character, I just wasted two months of my life. Thanks SE.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I mean one day some guy from S.E. came to my house with a gun and made me play for like a week straight!!

Oh wait a minute. That never happened.

And it didn't happen to you either, so STFU.

Wait, let me make sure I understand this... You're complaining because SE is letting you get your old character back? How much sense does that make?

Even if it was SE's fault that your character got cancelled (you don't specify how it happened...for all we know you did it yourself) I'd think you'd be happy that they're finally undoing their mistake.

Seriously, folks, this is an opportunity! I'm sure most of us have friends who've quit and regretted it. Time to bring them back into the fold.... /cackle
Homecoming!
# Mar 29 2005 at 10:54 AM Rating: Decent
To me this sounds kind of like a FFXI homecoming. A tempting invite for players of days past to relive their Vana diel adventures. Great idea!

/clap

So i guess character info ISN'T deleted after 3 months.

I was wondering why SE has insisted upto now that they cannot re-activate pol subscription after 3 months with the same set of discs? Its clear they can and always could have. This should be standard to anyone who has purchased the pol and ffxi discs who want to re-subscribe after 3 months not just for a period of time. OK maybe not the content id's but the pol registration should be always open to anyone who has purchased the discs.
RE: con
# Mar 29 2005 at 11:56 AM Rating: Decent
Reactivating FFXI has nothing to do with the discs themselves, and I don't think that's what SE was saying to begin with. Rather, SE used the term "copy" or some rubbish, inferring that the player must purchase a new box with a new, unused *manual* inside (provided that they are still printing the codes in the back of the book). If you notice the guest option in POL, that's because the game discs have no record of the keys that came in the book. POL doesn't care one way or the other which code you use to login, as long as it isn't expired/rejected by the server (and obviously matches the given syntax requirements).

I agree with asuraversion about the POL registration always being open, but if they did that, then this event would be more difficult... They should just keep our old data available in a database to begin with, instead of having an event such as this one as though it were some great favour. I've always thought the idea of losing your priveledges after 3 months of non-payment is ridiculous BS to begin with. SE is made up of money-whores, just like every big corporation.

Nah, they just see the potential of WoW ;)

Dozens of people who've switched from FFXI to WoW are quitting during these days, because they've reached everything WAY too fast. The only thing that might be holding them back to do so are cancelled accounts; no one wants to buy a game twice or start from the beginning while they had a nice char before.

Now they have the opportunity to come back, with another free month even. Of course, SE doesn't do that out of the pure goodness of their hearts ;) But it's definetly not desperation.

I've got to agree. People were hitting the level cap in WoW a few weeks after the game came out. Grinding exp is necessarily the greatest, but you can do a lot more in FFXI.
I'll be coming back
# Mar 28 2005 at 11:28 PM Rating: Decent
I'll be back for the second event, because my account is not cancled but no characters are on it. Come back for a month and see if the flaws have been fixed(seems like most of them have been patched).
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 28 2005 at 9:45 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i wonder if this means they might put away the charge soon. . .

*The following players are NOT ELIGIBLE to participate:
-Players who have unsubscribed from PlayOnline but have never purchased a FINAL FANTASY XI Content ID.
-Players who have been banned from PlayOnline due to violations of the PlayOnline Member Agreement, FINAL FANTASY XI User Agreement, or FINAL FANTASY XI Software License Agreement.

etc. etc.

I made the same mistake when first reading it as well...wondering why banned accounts would be allowed back. A quick re-read assured me they ARE NOT.
Yay!

Maybe with this my pals who came back from WoW/another server but had deleted their old chars/POL can get their awesome characters back...hope so! Poor guys had to start from scratch...and they definitely want their gil/equipment they left on their old characters (one was a bard and another was a ranger...lots and lots of expensive stuff that they would probably not want to buy again) even if they don't want the old chars back.

I can't wait to see what they think!

As a side note, this could possibly be used to re-name a character.. though it sounds somewhat risky.

Process:

1) Delete your current character (eep)

2) Create a new character with the same name

3) Apply to have your character undeleted (and hope everything works out)

4) Enjoy Vana'Diel with your new name!

no, when you have a char undeleted, you MUST have an open content id, or it fails and you have to reapply

Seems like SE isnt making enough money. Or is it that they just want more money? Well only question I have here is what if you had an account with the same name you currently have (It would be nice to get the 50k off my old character), how would it be named/renamed?

I don't think its a question of making money or not making money but I do think its that they trying get MORE money in the sense that they wanna give people a window of opportunity in hopes that they get readdicted (for lack of a better term). SOE did a similar thing with dead EQ accounts about a year or two ago gave all unsubscribed account a free week in hopes that they would resubscribe

People are quitting for a reason, why would they want to stick around for more?
RE: I'll be the first to post

Because they realize the game they left for isn't as good in the end?
