We've restored as much of the site as we can currently can. Most of the pages are there, we're just missing almost all of the site's images. We'll give status updates as we fix more.
This might get my account banned, but here it goes...
Doesn't Allakhazam keep nightly server backups on tape or some other media that can be used to restore the sites in the case of failure? Obstensibly, you should be able to pull the previous night's tapes and restore the site with only minimum loss of data...
If the site is too big for nightly backups (which may just mean you need a bigger backup system), why not cluster your systems so that one system failure would not devastate the site. If one system fails, you can automatically fail over to a secondary system while you fix the primary system.
I'm not ragging on the admins. I'm an admin myself. But "server hardware issues and NuNet routing problems" should not take weeks to fix...
BTW, Before you give me the "no money" excuse, let me say that will be hard to accept given that you charge for premium services and have advertising on every single page. This is one of 8 or 9 Allakhazam related sites, each with millions of posts (each post meaning at least on page view each, meaning revenue from those ever present ads). You use Perl, Apache, and Linux (all free), and even the bandwidth and server don't cost as much as everyone seems to think...
For my part, I will not rate you at all neither because you just give your true opinion and I am not the one to decide if you have to be banned for posting such an opinion.
I am as well an admin of a small website and I know that Allakhazam must be hosted on a big dedicated server that still costs a lot of money.
The server crash was on April 7th, we are on April 14th and most of the site works normally. It a very descent work that has been done.
You must know as well that it is not as easy to have daily backups anyway.
That is why I think anyway that you are a bit severe in you post.
Um... cannot decide wether I'll rate you down for criticizing admins of such a good site, that prolly do their best and bring us amazing help... or rate you up because you seem to be right (as far as I can juge at least).
Finally I wont rate you at all, though your post was interesting to read ^_^ Hopefully it won't start a war of flaming though, it's prolly not worth it.
(had to say something after reading this, sorry if the post didnt bring much...)
When I do browse monsters/NPCs by area I do get a list (lets say Selbina), but when I am trying to click on particular NPC, I get page not found. URL is http://ffxi.allakhazam.combestiary.html?fmob=2558
changing that to http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/bestiary.html?fmob=2558 fixes the problem.
When I tried changing the skills on one of my character's profiles (this one: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/profile.xml?63685), his jobs got all messed up.
This is more a word of warning than anything else. The character database appears to still be a work in progress.
I really appreciate having this site. It's been a great help throughout my entire FFXI-playing career. ^_^
im happy your back up cuz sum sites dont even have jeuno quests muchless rabao quests i had to spend an hour just to find the teleport altep quest and even then half the next was japanise
I am a bit worried with the character profiles... When I discovered this website on FFXI, I flashed on the character profiles. That is one of the most interesting aspect of this website for me, having the ability of inputing here all information on our characters is fantastic...
I hope this can be restored soon. Please let us know!!!
