Ahhh, i see paulius well thought, except for the magic aggro part. If im correct having a spell cast ON you doesnt get you aggro. So i'm still a bit hazey as to why they need that... but according to another poster (which i cannot confirm as i've never dont HNM's or anything that would wanna be stolen anyways) apparently if you cure someone while fighting it unclaims the monster... allowing for it to be claimed/stolen by another person/party??? i dont kno thats what i gathered from his post... tell me if im wrong, although since the game is back up i dont think anyone else will be reading this ^^. /wave and <see you again> on Alexander!

- A new command "/blockaid" has been added.
"/blockaid" has the following effect:
Magical assistance (such as "Cure" and "Protect"), trades, party invites etc. from non-party/alliance characters will be blocked.

I was thinking maybe they did this to stop people from killing others. Like when there is a mob that agros magic, the person casting the spell may be well out of range but the other person who lets say has sneak or invisible on is close enough to catch agro, someone could easily cast a spell on them and bam they would catch agro and possibly die from the monster.

- Players will no longer be able to use spells or abilities to claim a monster as soon as it appears.
If players attempt to use spells or abilities to claim a monster before a set amount of time has passed since it appeared, they will not be able to use those spells etc. again for a certain duration.

As for this it said spells or abilities so if you are in an exp party like always you can just use a ranged attack to pull since everyone does anyways. A ranged attack is not considered a spell or ability. I have a feeling a lot more people will be pulling NM's with ranged attacks now heh.

Umm... hmmm... maybe i havent dug deep enough into this (i didnt think i should have to) but i havent seen any posts about the actual changes. So i was wondering what yall thought about some of the "fixes". Like the set claiming time on monsters... i mean that sounds like it would be good for camping NM's and what not but what about XP mobs... That timer could be just enough time for that faster/higher leveled group to finish thru there mob and meet you there... and possibly pull it before you... i kinda see this change as a double edged sword... and since i have camped all the drops that i would be needing IE: signa/moldavites and what not i dont care much for the NM part of the equation. Wonder what the rest of you thought. And what about the blockaid. What sense does that make? Not allowing others to cure/protect you??? i can see the trading thing, wouldnt want annoying people sending you trade invites over and over. But i dont see the practical uses for not allowing someone to cure you or protect you. I dunno maybe i'm overlooking something >.> tell me if you see this as useful at all.
RE: About the actual changes...
# Aug 01 2005 at 2:24 PM Rating: Default
also, being protected while crafting screws up the synth, so... not being protected when yer trying to craft say, a haubergeron or scorpion harness, or cursed beverage.... might be juuuust a bit of a plus.

PS

aw you poor baby, couldn't cut in line that other people had been waiting 2-3 hrs for? my heart goes out to you, cry me a river.
RE: About the actual changes...
# Aug 01 2005 at 1:36 PM Rating: Decent
Its unclear if they mean the mob increases strength the longer it walks around unclaimed, or if it gains strength as you are fighting it. The latter would obviously make it harder for extended NM soloing, and harder for parties to barely take down a NM by kiting it around for awhile while the rest of the party heals.

The new blockaid command will come in handy if someone is attempting to stop you from doing something by spamming cures on you.

Someone can prevent you from, say, go into the NPC-fellow BCNM where there is a line of people waiting before you. They spam cure, and you lose focus of the Hut Door you need to examine to start the BCNM.

Even in this situation, cure-spam is considered harassment, and is against the TOS.

Just how much clearer would you like them to be...?
RE: About the actual changes...

Since being claimed, as in:

a: last claim was 4 hours ago and no one has claimed them since, or

b: was just claimed and is currently engaged in battle.

That would be clearer. Or course, b is more likely.

If players attempt to use spells or abilities to claim a monster before a set amount of time has passed since it appeared, they will not be able to use those spells etc. again for a certain duration.

- The notorious monsters listed below will slowly grow in strength after a certain amount of time has passed since being claimed:
King Arthro / Simurgh / Roc / Serket / Capricious Cassie /Lord of Onzozo / Behemoth / King Behemoth / Adamantoise / Aspidochelone / Fafnir / Nidhogg
*This time period will vary for each notorious monster.

- A new command "/blockaid" has been added.
"/blockaid" has the following effect:
Magical assistance (such as "Cure" and "Protect"), trades, party invites etc. from non-party/alliance characters will be blocked.
The "/blockaid" effect will be canceled if the player temporarily logs out to the PlayOnline Viewer, logs out, changes areas, or is KO'd.
Command/Subcommands:
/blockaid on
Activate the blockaid effect.
/blockaid off
Cancel the blockaid effect.
/blockaid
Display current blockaid status.

Daaaaaammmmmmmmmmm. Just think of all the differences in HNM now... no insta-voke supposedly, gets even stronger as you're fighting it.... no stealing through cures etc.....

There has been a number of issues noted recently which this is probably fixing. Take for example the latest quest - there's known issues there. Yeah it s a pain, yeah it's 3 hours of gameplay lost but OMG I've never known people to complain so much. What is the age of the posters here? Under 15?
As for the update times it's simple: SE is in Japan - they work through the day sorting out the update (and other job related stuff like normal people) and leave the system to auto update/install/defrag/etc during the night. (Just like a home user would).Personally I wouldn't want to work through the night just so some EU and US players can have continous play time so why should they?.
Geeze, it's only 3 hours stop whining! There's a lot of MMORPG's out there that are down more often for longer hours!

Time Zone
# Aug 01 2005 at 11:40 AM Rating: Decent
Seriously, if you can't figure out what time zone California is in...go back to school/stay in school/quit cutting class. If you are in that mysterious time zone, this means that from 10 am till 1 pm (roughly) you won't be able to log onto the game. Most of us, being over the age of "I don't know what time zone PDT is" are in work anyways. For me, being on the East coast (that's EST) the whole thing will be over after I come home from work. It's a three hour maintenance....omfg, get over it. Flame on [Bio]tches.

This is not a whinge about maintenance, cos, having worked on large servers, I know about maintenance.

But... what's PDT?
I have no idea what time zone that is.

Could someone put up a list of time zones that SE use and what they mean? And where they are... and how far behind/in front of GMT they are?

Thanks!

Here's a little tip: log on to POL. After u entered ur username and password (and TABbed to the OK button, somehow a simple Enter doesnt do the trick ^^) above the menu where u choose Games there is a message u can click on. When u do this, u get the Latest Info. Any information about time in those messages is nationalized: times will be translated to the closest Standard Timezone near u.

In my case, being eurotrash, its in GMT. If ur from the East Coast, it will prolly spell EST. Makes ur math a little easier.

Pacific Standard Time (PST) is GMT -8

Daylight savings time generally adds one hour from the first Sunday in April at 2am until the last Sunday in October at 2am in the United States (a few exceptions)

Therefore,
Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) is GMT -7

Actually, beacuse in the UK we also change our clocks we move from GMT to BST (British Summer Time), but since most people still call it GMT we are always 8 hours ahead of PDT/PST.

Just to make it even easier, 1pm PST/PDT is 9pm GMT/BST.
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 01 2005 at 3:52 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) here's a bug... Fix Ranger! Don't get me wrong.. great idea to have different dmg at different ranges. It makes it more challenging. But what i dont like about it is we lost alot of pleasure in our solo work. Yes i understand there is a certian spot to stand for best dmg..... but the mob just don't wanna stay there when im soloing! lol Hate to say it but i dont like the new 'nerfed' ranger. If theres a bug to fix.. well thats bugging me. And to all you smart *** players waiting to comment on my grammar, spelling, or tell me to quit playing ranger...or to quit complaining.... STFU and find something better to do....I'm trying to make a point here. Ranger with different damages at different ranges is a good idea...but soloing is **** now.. thats all I'm saying. My suggestion: maybe decrease the wait timer on shadowbind so we can use it more often in our solo work. Theres my 2 cents.

I find it rather funny that you tell us *Smart *** players* to stfu and find something better to do, but, correct me if I am wrong, you are the one posting your rants on the new Ranger *fix* on a server maintenance announcement. I mean you have about 100 different posts in the general topics forum about the new rangers ><; Take your stuff there because there is no reason to waste space on other forums just so you can cry about your new ranger.

Dear Squeenix,
I have been a loyal paying customer for a little over a year now. Never have I sent you last minute notices saying that my credit card is undergoing maintenance and you will need to wait until your next charging period to bill me. With this in mind I would like to make the following complaints:...

LOL, thank you so much for putting things into perspective.

FYI I am actually gratefull for this time off to do:

1) The laundry - ppl get suspicious when I show up looking the same.
2) The dishes - I hate eating out of pots.
3) Vacuuming - well ok, so I don't bother with this, hate the noise.
4) Shopping - hmm leave the house and miss the chance to get in first, maybe I wont go out.
5) Get a tan - omg I'm not a ghost anymore.
6) Get a massage - and why not? If I had to choose between a massage and sex I chooose massage because I can't give one to myself!

There's a few more, but these are the one's that miss out the most during my ongoing forever gameplay.

thanks for giving all the whiners some perspective. it HAS to be done. They do it right now because a majority of their market is Japan, it would be really stupid of them to do it any other time, from a business perspective. personally, I think it's great that they run maintenance. it's only three hours. Watch a movie, THREE hours. Yes, I understand. Some people are only allowed so much time to play, at certain times, and with them I can sympathize, but really, it's only once every few months. This was a huge update, and things will go wrong, at least SE has the commitment to you to fix them.

In short, be grateful they care enough to fix the problems, and take the three hours to take a shower and get some food.
Server Maintenance
# Aug 01 2005 at 12:31 AM Rating: Default
You guys un Defrag your drives right? Well I shouldnt say defrag because its a crock, but you all run utilities to check your drive data right? Im sure squre has to do the same thing. I have a server and I know if even one file gets funny, a good chunk of the site can go down. Much of that is only repairable if the server is ofline and not trying to read those files. If you run Windows defrag like that its starts over so much nothing gets done!

But in a server theres a lot more to be done not just drive checkups, and Updates. The hardware is often redundant to keep the server up longer. If a component fails, we probly never know. But they do need to replace that part, and that does mean shutting down the server.

So dear friends,
I know the Maint. Downtimes are frustrating. But know this, they are probly quite necessary in order to prevent interuptions later... For this reason Im totaly tolerant, and besides I do have a life out side FFXI {[Happy Face: Toung sticking out!]}

You know when ever I see people complaining about the time of updates and how somethings suck it sorta upsets me how much people take for granted. Sure it is annoying when you have some sparetime and the game that we all love and charish is unavailable. We should be greatfull that we have the opportunity to be able to play such an awesome game at all.
But when this happens I like to take advantage of the time to do other things like clean the house, do some reading, spend sometime with my friends, maybe volunteer at the local homeless shelter..... WTF am I talking about!

I HATE YOU SQUARE!!!

Well I could never hate you.... I'm sorry.
