Another night, another failed attempt at playing this stupid game. Log on...D/C...log on...D/C...over and over again. Didn't this all start on April 9th? April, May, June, July, August, September....it goes on and on and on and on..........

Guess I'll go read a book. Rate me down for the negative post if you like, I don't really care. If you can get on, good. I'm truly happy for you. All I wanted was to log on, cook some Jack 0'Lanterns for a friend who needed them, solo Bard to lvl 7, and go to bed. Is that so much to ask? Blah.

DDoS Attacks Target Final Fantasy XI

Attack on Square-Enix, Direction for Online Terrorism

Final Fantasy XI under attack

It's not BS. It's not 'just' a DDoS. It's a concentrated ATTACK on Square's servers, probably not just the ones that run the game - it's also apparently affecting some other Japanese companies, but they're not Square so I don't care about them.

Most companies go down faster than a prom date under a DDoS. Props to Square for bringing it down to the level on inconvenience, and I hope they bring down the bastards responsible.

Thanks for the links. Those are worth reading and I hope SE overcomes this. They're doing a decent job so far since some of us are able to get in (my husband and I had no trouble yesterday) but the problems are far from over.

ah i got on. Try a few times everyone. we are just going to have to deal with it for awhile. Weither or not its Ddos or not there is going to be problems. Seems like if you really want a perfect game u will have to lose ur service for a bit so they can completyly fix it and change a few things. But wtf do i know.
Ddos! wtf!

ya thats great and all what you said.. but its just a buncha BS man.. they arent telling us anything its just so generic..... there DDoS attacks everyday.. you would think at some point as much money and resources as they have.. that they would be able to have a good fighting system against these hackers..... and something in place that would prevent them... i mean come on SE and play online are huge companies.. with a but load of money and a but load of geeks workin for them...
jeez

# Sep 08 2005 at 3:13 PM Rating: Decent
Does anybody actually send there ideas to SE, or do we just talk about them here. Its not going to help us at all talking about it here. You do know in the Support part of POL u can snd your ideas to SE. If we flood there box with ideas that sound very simalar it might just get what we want. My idea is each months a 1-2 day maitenance. that will give them plenty of time to fix our problems. I also think that when they come back they shouldnt put up all servers but 1 at a time so the servers dont get flooded and we go back to the horrible lag and such.
I think when we finally get a few minutes on there we should tell them this. Not to add more things to it. Not to raises the cap. But a sceduled maitenance. So we can expect it. That would make it much easier. Yeah I'm mad too I was going to get my RSE today. Only day I had time for. Oh well...

you know it used to be like that.. when i first started playin this game a few yrs ago... it used to be tthat they would do like 2 or 3 servers on one day and continue on like that over like 3 days or so....it worked out perfectly... and then once a month they would do a complete maintenance over haul on the whole system... but lately things are so screwed up .. they do maintenance like once everyother day it seems

PlayOnline Login Difficulties (Sep. 8): Follow-up 2

This is a follow-up to the previous news regarding PlayOnline login difficulties.

As we stated in the previous news announcement, DDoS attack from the anonymous third parties is still continuing. However with the counter-measures taken by our technicans, login difficulties have been gradually easing.

We will continue investigating the issue and consider all possible measures to bring this matter to a speedy resolution.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

'Rather surprising that such a short maintenance time period from *yesterday* (an hour and a half)could still be causing issues the next day. Or perhaps something else is up? Regardless, the PlayOnLine site says the servers are up and running, but like others, I can't sign in either. An updated message from SE stating what's going on would be appreciated. SE is normally fairly good about communication, but that hasn't happened in this instance yet. Here's hoping we here something relatively soon...

BUILDING a computer, and ENGINEERING a network are about as different as Water and Alcohol.

The only valid point you made was about SE's resources.

I play for a few hours everyday, logging in in the morning to AH, and leveling / questing / crafting in the evenings. I have not DC'ed (other than being kicked out of Fullscreen becuase I keep forgetting to roll back my Video Drivers) since early July.

Mornings = peak log in time for Japan
Evenings - peak East Coast USA

Kill off all mules and give characters more storage space for items. Beit Storage, Mog Safe, or inventory (leaning more toward Storage). Case in point, the average player has at least 2 mules. Meaning that the 66% of all characters in the game are mules. 66% less characters in the game, would be a huge relief on lag issues. But I know there are gonna be flames cause some dumb ******* has been selling Cantarella for the last two months and no one is buying, yet he continues to Bazaar the stupid ****...
RE: Solution
# Sep 08 2005 at 11:36 AM Rating: Decent
Honestly, I do not see how removing mules is going to effect lag.

Characters need to be logged in to create lag.
Do you honestly think that my 6 mules create lag on the server while my main is out XPing???

The only possible way for a mule to create lag is for those few people who actually have more than one IP address. Most of us do not. They can be logged into more than one character at a time.

Also, even having people stay logged in and their bazaar up isn't going to create all that much lag.

Its the people logged in and moving around, XPing, chatting, shouting, searching the AH, beginning/completing quests and missions, viewing Custscenes, etc. that are creating lag.

So your idea isn't likely to help much at all.
RE: Solution
# Sep 08 2005 at 2:21 PM Rating: Decent
I actually know several people who have multiple systems inhouse just so they can bazaar on a mule while they play the game. And yes, they purchase multiple licenses and copies of the software to do this. Just the other night, a player in my party was playing his melee character while PLing us with a high level WHM. So yea, it happens.

But I see your point about it not helping the lag as much as I thought it would. However, I still believe it would do a noticeable amount of good. Not too mention the amount of stress relief in Jeuno.

Same here with the d/cing. It really hurt my xping last night since I got booted 3 times, our SAM got booted twice, and eventually our tank got booted and never came back. Even after we gave up partying I got booted and after trying to log back in I couldn't even move before I disconnected again. Couldn't even make it back to the moghouse. I sure hope this gets resolved soon.

I'm glad I wasn't in a party last night. Everytime I D/C I will log back on and I will D/C again immediatley. Then, when I log back on again It will be fine and my Recieve will jump up to like 600+ and 30 minutes later I will begin to D/C. Luckily I was lvling my NIN last night so noone felt the effects of my D/Cing.

P.S. I'm atleast kinda glad its not just me having the problem though I am sorry you are going through it too.

Well, I'm happy to report that I had no trouble logging in last night. My husband was also on almost all day and never disconnected. I'm sorry for everyone who can't but SE is doing everything they can. If they weren't no one would be able to log in. These DDOS attacks are serious and not easy to deal with. There are certainly a lot of people out there who would like to see Square Enix hurt and this is one way they can really hurt them.

Scattershot responses:

Can't have maps on the hard drives; PS2 doesn't have enough room and the PC players can't be trusted.

Lvl 1 mules is where the real gil - I mean cash - comes from. Constantly d/c'ing bazaar mules would be like shooting themselves in the foot. With a cannon. There ain't no profit in it. Besides, they're just sitting there - the good mules, anyway. It's the morons who shout their bazaars that need to be beaten. (Hey - we can SEE the bag! Be quiet and let me shop!)

A central location for the AH? So that at one shot a buyer could wipe out not only the stock of a specific item but set the price history for it at one shot? You didn't really think that through.

Well, that's not really true.... You fail to consider all sides of the problems, mainly the sides that are ripe for exploitation and evil intent.

And as for any idea that depends on player responsibility, just drop it. These are the same players that invented casinos, charge people to lot on rare/ex items, developed fishing bots, speed hacks.... the list goes on. <extremely cynical comments deleted>

As far as a bulletin board for bazaars, that actually is an excellent idea. But in order to make a bulletin board worthwhile, your mule has to be somewhere where people can find it!
My opinion
# Sep 07 2005 at 5:34 PM Rating: Good
Everyone,

I mean this post just as a mere opinion of a hardcore gamer since he was 10 yeas old, I've played all FFs and have had the chance to play many SE's titles that although not the best of the crop they do tend to be entertaining and quite appealing to any RPG fan out there.

That said, here is the point to my post. Yes SE needs to be part of the "corporate" commmunity and give their share olders what they ask for: Money. However, as said in a previous post they have no obligaion what so ever to keep updating and increasing the content that we so happily enjoy every single day that we spend as our FFXI Avatars.

I know somewhat about developing software and a few more about corporate networks, and believe me when I say that not even the most wealthy companies in the US have the infrastructure to withstand the load of thousands of members using their services. The purpose of adding content can and should be viewed from two perspectives; 1. To keep the gamers hooked on the game and trying to get everything; 2. Keep the gamers playing and as already mentioned get the cash flow going. This in turn becomes a cycle, neither virtous nor vicious, for everyone is a winner since we (gamers) get more playtime (replay value) and the investors (whoever) gets their cash.

Now, we have to be honest with ourselves, how many other real-life services have we thought of improving (telephone, DSL, Cable, subway, etc.) and still paying and using it even though we know that it's not the best and we hardly ever see any improvement. Yes it may sound odd to compare a game to a real life service, but look at it this way, you pay for the service (access to their servers) in order to be able to enjoy their fun and exiting (sometimes frustrating game). this same reason may be the purpose of why we get so upset when we come from a long day's work and launch our Playonline Viewer just to be about to click the play button just to read "Gameplay is not available during maintenance". It is frustrating, however when I think of the possibilities that this game has and all he time that it has lasted with new content ever so often, I say "Downtime sucks the big one, but heck, if I'm going to be able to get improved gaming, 1 day of maintenance and updates is more than worth it".

All in all, SE may be percieved as a people's company even though they sometimes make mistakes, they try to make up for it (everyone who knows me, knows how disturbed I was by the Sunbreeze's music...), Let's all just keep brainstorming on ideas and who knows maybe someday we'll be surprised at how the things we've come to talk about become part of OUR game.

Take care everyone, and thank you for taking the time to read this. If you ever see me around at hades and need some help let me know ^^!
Idea for Bazaars in Jueno
# Sep 07 2005 at 4:35 PM Rating: Good
Here is my idea:

1. Make a new part of Jeuno solely for bazaars. Then all bazaars would be in one place and upper junco and wherever else wouldn't be so bad.

2. Make separate areas within this new part of junco, or even buildings where each type of crafting bazaar could stay. While a lot of people have various items, there could be a misc. category and others this is just a rough idea. This would make it easier than randomly searching bazaars hoping one has an item from the craft you need. Would narrow down your search at least.

3. D/C anyone in other parts of junco once they are idle for 4, 6, or 12 hours.

4. I think someone mentioned something like a bulletin board that you could look at and see which bazaar was selling it the cheapest. That would also work within the areas designated for each craft. You could perhaps, go to the alchemy bazaar building, look at the bulletin board and see if what you need is selling and for how much. Then either buy it off the board, or just find the bazaar in the area.

Ok that’s all I can think of for now. Numbered them for easier responses to certain parts. Not a computer person by any standard so I wouldn't know if these were possible or extremely hard to program in to the game. Just a way to help the lag in parts of junco and organize the bazaars for easier viewing.

First post, so don't be too hard on me :)

I agree that 1, 2 & 3 would be great and could work... not jus in jeuno tho... but in all the main Cities. It would cut down the lag around the AH in general. And to be honest everything we do in the game is our responsibility anyway, so it'd be great to see ppl actually being considerate of others

your idea about setting up areas for different bazaars is good, however, by using the bulleting idea, you are literally transforming it into another auction house. I think their purpose of having a bazaar is to make it work like a market-you can go around buying stuff when you see it. If you were able to oversee everyone's bazaar and their prices in some sort of bulletin, then competition would be too strong because everyone will try to be the cheapest. Also, you'd lose the "market" way of selling and buying.

I would love for ideas 1, 2, & 3 to be implemented, but it leaves an awful lot of responsibility on us users to be in the right building for the right craft etc. Just imagine how many naked Galkans named Noobsmule or OMGWTFBBQ selling sushi would be in the woodworking bazaar building. Just like most things IRL, leaving it up to us to do things in a specified manner won't achieve compliance.

Great idead tho!! Rate up!
Benchmarking

If the true heart of the discussion here is the quality of the game then what SE truly needs to do to make it better is one word. "Benchmarking".
For those of you non-business buffs, benchmarking is a process where a company first looks at itself and its quality and then compares itself to how other companies in the same field work and their strengths. The goal is to get ideas from other places to increase the quality and value of the product. In this case the product is FFXI, and the serious problem is the "lag" issues.

I've seen an very simple and effective way to deal with it in Arenasoft's Guildwars which has only 1 server. Yeah that's right 1 server for all those thousands and thousands of people. The way it works is that all the maps all the things in the game are on your computer, not the server. Therefore significantly reducing memory usage. Also every city is divided into districts 1-30 or so depending on how many people are in that city. And then there are foreign districts for Europe and Korea. Now you can manually select a district and even visit foreign ones if you like. Whenever you would enter, the server would select a district with a lower population to keep from crowding. Also if there is a max person limit too, so everyone cannot manually select district 1 thinking that's where everyone will be.

In my opinion this has proved to be brilliant, I play Guild Wars as well (seeing as its free) and find that SE could learn a thing or two from them.

Another idea to clear the monotony of equipment is to add "dyes" to the game to change the color of armors and weapons. Further allowing you to customize your character to the way you would like. Dyes would also stretch the economy further and provide low levels another thing to farm in addition to crystals. And when sold at the AH would revert to original color just as signitures dissapear when sold on the AH.

The best thing you can do really is to flood SE's comment/suggestion with e-mails about how you feel about the game positive or negative. Writing here is ok, but it really doesn't mean anything seeing as the only people reading it can't really change the game. I can't tell you how many rants and discussions I've had with SE peeps whose job is just to answer e-mails and send stuff to their higher ups for consideration.
The more you talk about a specific thing the more likely it will be considered. If 70% of the people playing the game suddenly flooded the SE mailbox about wanting chocobos and an AH in Selbina/Muahara, the more likely it will be considered.

SE will do things to appease the "masses" not 10 or so people. So start sending to them, start flaming them for the stupid **** they pull, and all that stuff. If enough people do then it will make a difference, if not then ******** here isn't going to do a damn thing.

As for this additional maintanence...yeah, I wish they'd get their ******* act together, this is getting a bit old...
/sigh although, we did agree to all the crap that comes with the game when we signed on and game them our creditcard numbers, so we can't legally tell them to do anything. Hang in there, at least this shows they are maintaining the games more than other companies and that they are making an effort (even though its a half-assed one) to improve the game.

Well luts see ....i was reading this in a book ... Ah yes they dont want to be like other RPG' online today, or be another tipical clone off of everquest. i dont see myself ever playing Final everquest 11. hell no. no doubt Guildwars hasa few cute lil features. and everygame on every network does lag ether you like it or not, Luts use another onliner for example. Medal of honor Series. The series builds in detail and grafs and more features you may share your dirty stick at if you wanted. Its like saying Halo didn't Rip off Doom (it really did back in 1993) (bungue shame on you) You see to make a game Better then the rest you gotta color in the lines of your own coloring book. Add your own colors to that lil teddybear with the balloon if you will. Yea i know benchmarking. old skool talk. square wants to do nothing but give you a new fresh style of gameplay with passing month, and placing that classic style of FF you guys remember that sparked magic in nintendo. They oh course tryed to outdo Phantasy star in the long run or any other grand title of that time (like dragonwarrior *drool*) so before you all make this game into another freaking everquest. please just stop while your ahead lol i refuse to fight a Hnm without a Escape route its bad enuff i loose a good chunk of exp doing it. oh course that is like you win some you lose some. but not my cup of tea.... well luts look on a more + note ....i saved a horde of gil by switching to Choco!

yea i agree on that note. but their is a choco in la teiene or canyon, if you want that real Everquest feel goe outrun a few gobbies baby.you actually do a little close to what the other big brands do, but in Team format (for all you counter strike junkies) "i can quit anytime i want but i wanna sniper this guy by looking threw the wall!" I mean i love Team format gaming it gives me a chance to bond with others, other then caping him in the kull and saying "so how are your Children?" *FRAG* " oh nice shot Ikilledbill4525" i mean i dont wanna just kill other people quite like that. i love the teamwork you may do in this game like the <sky> or <Sea> or what not. i know you all love doing that without the maintence. I am not trying to rock the chain of the fans of guild wars, everquest, or whatever is your fetish but i just dont think making ffxi a mere copy of the other games will fix anything big. that open server thing is somewhat of a ok idea but i think there is a limit for players on teh servers thats why they do drafting every few months. well enuff of my talk if you got any comments or questions or just wanna chat about it in a calm fasion just leave me a buzz you FFXI junkies.

You really have no idea what you're talking about. First of all, FFXI is the closest to an EQ clone already compared to other MMO's, WoW & GuildWars for example have made leaps and bounds in thier own directions.

Also, the recent lag problems are due to them securing the network which they apparently screwed something up with the connections. The previous problems had nothing to do with the player count, it used to be much higher and plummeted to WoW and GW releases. It has to do with the ******** out there that have staged the DDOS attacks against SE servers and hurts the game, thus why they tried to secure the servers.

And Halo a rip-off of Doom? Pull your head from your ***. Just because Doom was the first FPS doesn't mean all the ones after it are rip-offs. Halo is more like Marathon (which is also a Bungie game) and make nice revolutions in FPS multiplayer. (Grenade trigger, regenerating armor, melee.)

You Compared HALO to DOOM?!?!?!?! and even Implied that DOOM is better! All games fall into certain Genres and all the games withing those genres most likely share some characteristics. But, you can not say that anygame is a rip-off of another (Well, not until you find two games with matching story lines). Plus when ppl say Benchmark they just mean that the newer game has some really cool new features that will probably be included in many future games.

Marathon = MACS DOOM. SAME concept. Same type of gameplay. Halo. Oh look the main hero is a Green Space marine. and his Visor is Gold oh look. Blah you guys are not even trying to insult me. EQ period was the first type of its kind yea. FFXI was totally differnt from EQ. Not knowing what i am talking about? DOOM IS BETTER. Ok luts compare monsters in halo. Flood, a floating green piece of ugly. Campared to the One eyed sucker from doom 2. Both release undead creatures. Why would i wanna skrew around with a Xbox controller to play a rerun of doom wannabe then i can pop in a autoplay verison of Final doom and injoy the same crap (without the warthog or whatever) only thing halo is is just a souped out verison to doom. Marathon Same thing. Know your routes. Halo Alien race hostal. Doom Sapce hellions/space invaders. Same bloody thing. i think alot agree on that. I played Marathon 1+2 during windows 95 years (yuck) when it was release for the pc. of coruse this angered mac fans compaining it was their baby not pc users. Bungue wantedto make the quick buck so eh they poped it on cd rom and shiped it. yea Marathon was a ok game, halo 1 was a ok game (if i dont have to Xbox control it) halo2 was dry from the first one. a lil more concent just a sucky storyline. 360 halo3 is released along to the pc too rumored. Online maybe. i might pick it up. Even usethe controler from my friends old xbox for a paper weight too. Kthxbi
Let's talk about the business ramifications.

There are great suggestions here. Unfortunately, Square probably will not be doing anything to hurt their bottom line. The current system is set up to...

1) create more time that you have to spend in the game to go from Auction House to Auction House, thereby spending more months in the game than you normally would (meaning more monthly fees for SE).
2) have you create extra mules so that SE can rake in the extra real-life cash (if you use the multiple mule AH method like I do).

I'm not saying that SE doesn't care about your game experience. They do. However, they also care about bringing wealth to the shareholder (which is their number one priority, of which customer satisfaction is only a component). As a result, these suggestions will take a back seat any day of the week. Square is not a private company, and the Nikkei analysts will almost always prevail in these matters.

All this being said, I hope SE does listen to us at some point, makes a customer-first decision (for once), and allows for a one-world auction house and bazaar system...

...and I hope SE will rent more login servers during the impending massive October update (those IT n00bs).

Well on Gilgamesh, many people tend to neglect the Auction House in Upper Jeuno near the Chocobo Stables (Near the Chocobo Lisence Quest and Beastmaster Flag/AF quests.)

I find it a nice alternative to Lower Jeuno, and Ru'lude Gardens.

On the note of the maintainence (Again. -.-) I agree that they need to just get it right the first time. BUT hey, they're doing the best that they can, I hope. We can only be glad that they're still developing the game, when so many other MMOs are going down the dumps thanks to no love from the designers. The plain fact is...In the face of so many other MMOs, we're spoiled rotten. And I think we look past that a lot.
Auction House and Lag

I find that lag is bad in most areas due to the population such as Jeuno. We call that "Lag City" and yet I fail to understand the idea of a 'central' Auction House {since I have a mule in every city accept Norg and Rabao} and really do find it rather nice to break away from my main chara and go to a mule to just get away from all the stuff that is going on where my main chara may be at.

Jeuno has always had lag and always will. With people casting spells and crafting at the Auction Houses that makes things works for the other cities; atleast in my humble opinion.

I have never seen a reason to stand there at the Auction House and craft like a mad person then get upset when someone casts magic around you and you fail. It is just as much your fault for crafting at the Auction House as it is for those that choose to cast magic so close to the Auction House.

I have been in Jeuno going by the Main Auction House late at night United States Eastern Time and seen the same characters standing there as were standing there {without bazaars} that were there in the morning I signed on.

The main reason there is so much lag in places like Jeuno and other places like the Jungles of Kazham is that SE's servers are not adequate to handle all the traffic. SE really needs to update their servers so that they can provide us with better connections and less lag.

What will happen when the new part of the game comes out in November? Prolly more and more lag *le sigh*.

Well thats my 2 gil and 1 Goblin Mask worth but then again it is just an observation of a Mithra with insomnia. Be well all and have fun in your adventures!

To cut down on the lag of people going to sleep and leaving their characters logged in for bazaar, what if they made a place where you could sell items, but make it so that people browsing it could see what u were selling it for? Like, have everyone sell their stuff on something like the AH, except you can see who is selling it for the lowest? This might defeat the purpose of the AH, but it would be interesting.

Also, make it so you can sell as many items as you want!! I never really understood why you can only AH 7 items at a time? Maybe someone could explain?

As far as my bazaar idea, the only problem I could see is undercutting would become horrible probably :-/ But anyway, what do you guys think?

Undercutting shouldn't be an issue ever. The economy is based on supply and demand, so people willing to accept less for items would help reduce the retarded degree of inflation on almost every server.

They had this in EverQuest. It worked rather well for the fact that you could find what you were looking for Very Fast and efficently. However it did nothing for the lag due to the fact you had an increased number of mules who could sit in 1 zone under specfic locations. So anytime you went through that specific area it would get really laggy. I did like the function, and used it myself. Tho it would only fix the ability to find what you're looking for easier, instead of taking hours to search through each persons bazaar, and you know you still miss some with the amount of characters that show up on yer screen.

If they want to fix the lag issue they should make the game time out after a maximum time limite. I would say 60 min is generally log enough that if you had to run to the store you could, and come back to where you were. However if they don't want to constantly have high amounts of users, they could cap it @ say 8hrs?. This would be more practical then them actually purchasing more survers to support the bandwidth.

Anyone with no activity for 60+ minutes should be booted from the game. If they aren't at least chatting on LS or telling people, they're just taking up bandwidth better enjoyed by everyone else.

Sounds like the old system in Star wars galaxies you had the option of sell for X amount or you could auction it. i couldn't remember if there was even a limit on it but it did work eitherways.
why the hell not?

i never really understood the valid point on making different AH places. why not just use one AH to control them all? keep the jeuno AH tax but apply this to all regions. i really hate having to ask LS members or going from mule to mule to find an item or where it would be stored. (thinks of buying armor & weapons from norg/kazaam as an example) there might be relevancy to not doing it this way, but it would sure cut down jeuno lag. although jeuno is still the main center as far is /shouting for help in. i thought of a message board in game, but there would always be **** on it. as well as someone posting something and not doing it anyways. (reason why people get LS's)
