Changes to Dragoon Job

In the next version update, major changes are scheduled for the dragoon two-hour ability. The development team does not consider the dragoon to be particularly weak when compared to other jobs, but we are aware that a large part of a dragoon's strength depends on the presence of his or her wyvern. After taking into account the wyvern's tendency to be quickly defeated in heated battles, and the dragoon's lack of a powerful special ability for use in missions and other critical situations, it was decided that improvements were necessary. Simply raising the wyvern's HP and defense to increase its survivability would cause balance issues in other parts of the game. However, it was judged that improving the dragoon's two-hour ability would have less of an impact on overall balance, and so the following changes have been planned for the upcoming version update: -New two-hour ability The dragoon will be imbued with the strength of his or her wyvern for a fixed length of time, increasing the dragoon's power and adding special effects to "Jump" abilities. -Call Wyvern The recast time for this ability will be reduced to twenty minutes. This ability will only be available when the main job is set to dragoon. -Wyvern Wyverns will now have the equivalent of the job trait "Subtle Blow," reducing the amount of TP gained by opponents from the wyvern's attacks. More details will be announced at the time of the version update. FINAL FANTASY XI Development Team (11/22/2005)

I don't see a need for this change, I have never had problems keepin my Khocha alive xcept in bibiki bay with gobs... they were fun eh? any who, I think this will be an interesting new experiance for higher lvl drgs to get used to, we are going to have to learn how to best utalize the new 2hour and I am really hoping that people realize that this has the potential to change our job quite a bit in non exp situations. Also a friend of mine who has recently started lvling drg (he is now lvl 40) mentioned something to me and I really hope that he is mistaken. He was concerend that with Drg gaining a new 2hour that we will become more hated by some than we already were, "couldn't use the 2h they gave ya in the first place eh?!" and also that fourms will now be spamed by other jobs that want new 2hours. btw personally I see alot of use in Nin 2hour.

As a (currently) on the shelf ranger, I just want to say it's nice to see SE boosting a jobs playability to redress the balance for a change... /salute to all you Dragoons to whom christmas came early : )

btw, it has been confirmed in an interview that SMN is due to recieve some lovely new blood pacts... who knows, NIN's might get what they're wishing for too.

I have played a Dragoon damn near since I started playing close to 2 years ago (Feb. 2004). I love Dragoons, and I am proud to say I can outdamage most melee players I party with (this is before this upgrade). Though, I found myself at a loss if I already used my 2Hr. and hopped on a Chocobo or got killed or anything along the lines. Dragoons have always been bad ***, but its hard to play one properly, choose the proper sub for it, etc. This will help make Dragoons what they should be: Bad *** Always. It sickens me to think people look down upon DRGs specifically on the fact that their Wyverns arent their. Thanks Square-Enix, for finally doing what should have been done in the first place. Now if only Chocobo Mazurka was a little lower level ;)

I completely agree. It seems like some people think that wyverns aren't that big of a deal and don't do much damage. Others seem to feel that unless a DRG has a wyvern out, they aren't worth having around.
I don't know what some of the other DRG are doing that are complaining, but unless I chocobo, I almost never lose my wyvern in combat and I'm lvl 68. Even if I do lose my wyvern, I still can out damage and out TP many players out there.
As far as subs go, I have SAM and WAR subbed, and I perfer the WAR sub for the ATT skills and Double Attack. Meditate is cool, but getting an extra 60 TP every 3 minutes and an occassional extra 1 TP on melee doesn't compare to getting tons of Double Attack melee hits and a Double Attack Jumps in. Even WHM sub is good with the right party. You dont seem to lose that much attack, although you lose the attack abilities/traits. But you can't beat a Healing Breath 3 for 200 HP at a cost of 6MP.

I am looking forward to this but i havnt been playing for about 6 months. only problem is that when i played dragoon i opnly got to lv 24 and then i had to quit the game
i am worried that i might not have the skills required to to look after the wyerven and that i meight negect him and stuff. but surely DRG/WAR is a good combo right?

Finally fixed the time in 2HR...well er ability, good job SE.....But really IMO "Call Wyvern" Should be lv.30 (<-- DRG Main) and should also be subbable heck, even if it last 5 mins while subbed it would definetly Boost /DRG subjob.(you anyways cant have 2 pets out, so there should be no problems or imbalances).

Really though imagine if DRG was finally an actually good sub that people woulnt over look(D D's who would sub DRG= MNK WAR DRK THF NIN SAM). I currently use it only for ballista...but really wish it could have more stuff to compete with the better Melee subs for real badass Exping...

(So far /DRG sub now will have 3 things that will sit pointlessly in my Ability menu: Call wyvern(no use), Spirit link(no use), Ancient Circle(.....) yep...)

But anyways Hurray for DRG Main!!

Now if they fixed abit RNG main Acc.(i was partiying with one...good they got Owned with the Nerf) and gave things to MNK....perhaps like the RSE we dont have...and more gear...PLEASE! Sick of wearing(or not..in my case lol) the same Overpriced gear.

I think it's about time, that SE realized why so many few DRGs exist;its for that simple fact!when Wyverns die....<godamn...again!?>the 2hour to call Wyvern back isjust way too long!i'm really glad they're about to shorten it,we all know that "in heated Battles"Wyverns do die and DRGs feel almost powerless!A DRG without his pet is as good as an Ordinary Job;in melee class anyways...sad to say but true!maybe more folk will turn to the Aerial Powers of the Dragoon Class to guide them through their Journeys. It is an Awesome job,Powerful WS and pet helping out is an awesome force to reckon with...if he only survives a few more battles...THX SE;it looks like you're finally heeding our calls for improving this game and making it more enjoyable!

I appologize in advance for the length of this post but I feel a little education is in order. Flame me if you want.
Ok. Let us take a closer look at DRG as subjob. Everybody's 1st reason for this is because you can't use Call Wyvern(currently DRG 2HR). Big deal. You can't use any other subjobs 2HRs either. Now lets look at the abilities/job traits you can use. (I will assume that ppl know what the following abilities/traits do but if not then chk out this website for descriptions)

DRG has:
Jump (lvl 10)
Attack Bonus (lvl 10)
Accuracy Bonus (lvl 30)

Thinking strictly in terms of a DD, the main job u sub DRG with will, at lvl 20, get an extra attack ability(Jump) and trait(Attack Bonus). Now, discounting the small increases in STR, DEX, etc. you can receive from various subs, no other sub gives you 2 reliable abilities/traits at this lvl. Main job at 20 gets the following from other more commonly used subs:
-MNK sub adds Boost and Counter(having used sub MNK myself, Counter doesn't trigger as much w/o the higher lvl gear that increases this ability).
-SAM adds Store TP.
-RNG adds Sharp Shooter and Accuracy Up. Good sub if you plan on using ranged attacks more but if not then Accuracy is all that is usefull.
-DRK adds Physical Attack Up and a few low lvl spells(but not enough MP to make good use of them).

For a main job of 30:
-THF adds Sneak Attack(but it really works best for THF main).
-WAR adds Berserk.
-DRK adds Last Resort.

For a main of 50:
-WAR adds Double Attack.
-MNK adds Focus.

When main hits 60, subs start adding better abilities/traits:
-DRG adds Accuracy Bonus.
-WAR adds Physical Attack Up(finally).
-DRK adds Physical Attack Up II and Soul Eater.
-RNG adds Barrage(but again only good if using ranged attacks) and Accuracy Up II.
-SAM adds Meditate(damn TP machines).
-THF adds Trick Attack(SaTa good but when subbing THF its best when used with a WS).

So DRG while being a great main job, can be a good subjob too. Especially during the earlier lvls. But as with all players, subs are a matter of preference. So game on and try stuff out for yourself.

I've wanted to level DRG for a long time as sort of a side hobby for my PLD, but I know that to do that I'd give up invincible (Which I used less than the DRG 2hr but when I needed it I needed it) and found myself in a problem. I cant even get a pt at lvl 10. You heard me right: 10! I waited for a week and no pt, and soloing was just sort of a joke. I've said since I found out what the 2hr was that it needed a revamp, and they needed more active traits. If they fix one half, the other cant hurt much.

I'll hope to see a mass of DRGs coming back to the job, cause at the level where my PLD is, I certainly could use someone who can spam damage. Penta-Thrust is GO!

Implications
# Nov 23 2005 at 7:38 PM Rating: Decent
It's good that Drg may no longer be looked at as particularly useless with these changes...but having a wyvern out longer, might not make them look all that much better in the eyes of most players. I wonder if the Wyvern will also be given stronger attacks, because that could help a great deal. I think, for Drg 2 hr, the wyvern should let loose some huge breath blast that does dmg equivilant to Astral Flow, but only used once.
RE: Implications
# Nov 23 2005 at 8:55 PM Rating: Decent
Why copy another job's 2hr? Really they should make their 2hr something like a barrage of dragons attack the mob, but that could also be the BST's 2hr. Or another DRG 2hr could be a uber husky jump attack that is embedded with a dragon around the PC that stregthens the attack dramatically.

BST 2 hour is fine. It allows you to charm an IT+++++++++ mob for 30 minutes. That is very usefull, not to mention a life savor if things go wrong, Charm 2 hour then zone. Or just grab an IT and kill low level stuff if yoru trying to get some kind of drop.

and i cant wait to see how this affects the game, some of my best friends have but dragoon on hold due to neverending waits for pt invites. all this trouble because bradyguides said "drk > j00" =/

Some of you are missing the point that SE makes about subbing DRG. You can't call wyvern if DRG is subbed!
While I think DRG do get the shaft in abilities and traits, I wouldnt say that I was gimped. I never had trouble keeping my wyvern alive unless we fought gobs that spammed bombs. However, it would be pretty dumb for me to use 2hr to summon wyvern and 2 hours later not be able to use 2hr again cuz wyvern was still alive. I disagree with Muerte that the wyvern is kind of weak. If you compare hit for hit against another melee player in your party, my wyvern usually does comparable damage. I'm not saying they outdamage them, because SATA, Double Attack, Triple Attack, etc put them way ahead. But my wyvern can hit for just as much as a player using sword or axe. Plus their breath attacks can out do some WS, and you cant beat Healing Breath 3 for 200 HP at a cost of a Dia or Poison.
This kinda makes Spirit Link not as important IMO. I'm not going to worry too much about sacrificing my HP to save it if I can summon it again in less then 20 minutes. I feel bad for anyone who spent merits on it.
Don't get me wrong, I think this change has been a long time coming, but I just hope it doesnt ***** up the job. I always thought if SE could program a sub 2hr that could be used when you have wyvern out, that would be better. What I mean is since I can keep my wyvern alive for weeks on end (as long as I dont chocobo) then my 2hr is constantly up. I have my wyvern out and my 2hr is back up, then we could use it to do some kind of joint attack with wyvern. But since Jumps are other main part of being drg, we'll see how this works out.

Thank you for finally pointing taht out.. some ppl were prolly readin it to fast to get it into their head.. if you sub /DRG your NOT allowed to summmon the Wyvern.. only when you make DRG your main..

besides as the stupid ppl didn't pay attention.. try subing BST with SMN.. if you have a Avatar out, when you try and Charm your not allowed.. you'll get a Message sayin "You already have a pet out" so duh........ just like if you sub BST with DRG.. you wont be able to summon your wyvern and wont be able to use Charm...

So before we get another stupid post.. sayin "i cant wait cause i want to Summon Wyvern as PLD!"..

Plz read the entire Message thank you!!

Nothing. They have their magic and they are good as they are. As far as job abilities, I personally don't think that they need them. A better 2H would be good, but beyond that, I can't see much they need.
