A Day with SE

SURPRISE!

We have just arrived back at the hotel room after an amazing day touring the Los Angeles Square-Enix office location! Most of the visit consisted of "oooo"s and "aaaaah"s as we were floored with the all of the visuals and inner workings of the founders of the game we've all grown to love.

We will provide a full write up of the trip after we return home, but we were too excited to wait to tell you all of the juiceir portions of the meeting, particularly a special announcement made by Sage Sundi at the conclusion of the meeting.

They plan to make the PC version of Final Fantasy 11
windowable. Yes. You heard it here first!

The windowed version has been approved by the higher ups. Soon enough, we shall hear a formal announement and receive more information regarding this feature! For now, we speculate that this will be done via a future patch update.

Also, we mentioned to them how the drop rate for certain end-game items are particularly difficult. The whole team seemed very interested in our feedback (well, your feedback!) regarding this. Sage Sundi himself mentioning that we should expect a change in drop rate in the future as they evaluate that which was discussed. (More details and pictures later!)

Let them know that if the continue to add good features as such like window mode and larger macro paletes a quest that allows you to view others TP the less ground the third party tool mind set will have to stand on.

Items that can be crafted that allow you to see the distance of monsters.. (kind of odd but it might be interesting)

being able to veiw all cool down timers of spells job abilities on the screen built into the standard UI...

the more that features like this are added the less people will feel the need to justify windower.

I don't know if anyone suggested mentioning this to SE while you're on your visit but I have a very good idea which I can't see many people complaining about.

Monsters that drop RA/EX items should have more pop frequency and higher drop rates. For example Leaping Lizzy. Friends of mine have camped her for over 8 hours with no compitition only to be 0/5. All for some boots that are RA/EX. I think it's just a bit too much work.

We already have a Windower. SE is f*cking pitiful.

What part of "more details later" did you miss from my post?

Add to that, after witnessing everything GM and Customer Service goes through and their process, I officially become cranky at the mention of anybody saying "GM and Customer Support do nothing."

I'll get into that in the FULL write up.

Just let me get home. Sheesh.

<sarcasm>Yeah I'm so wrong that the MAJOR concern of the playerbase is why SE will not ban the blatently obvious RMT who have been around for years. The disgusting wait times and support service offered when calling in are MUCH less important than windowed play when players have already taken that into their own hands. EVERYONE is quite happy with the current claim system and MPK patch. SE provides TONS of ways for players to voice concerns and get back more than a form mail while nothing gets done. I should just wait patiently and not get angry, or hey I could quit the game I've been playing for years because the developer has **** poor customer service :)</sarcasm>

You can go into as many details as you'd like, it doesn't mean SE will follow through. People have been voicing their complaints over this crap forever, and SE has occasionally stated they are "interested" or "looking into" addressing the concerns, and they have never materialized. As far as windowed mode goes, SE told BG forums last month about it, so zam is hardly the first to have this information. >.>

We use to explain the reason why we didn't support windower...but, we

looking in to the possibility (seriously)

So yes, people do have every right to moan about this kinda junk, SE has blowing smoke up people's asses for a long time, so there's no reason for anyone to believe them now. Windowed mode? Ya, I'm sure they'll finally implement it. Anything else? I'll believe it when I see it.

Well as long as I've got a post here

The windowing is nice, I'm with others in wanting fullscreen alt-tab.

What I'm most interested in is the drop rate changes. I'm staying hopeful, mostly because Pikko and Exodus can suggest game changes and know that they'll be heard. Looking forward to the rest of the reports.

By the way, picture = good

What's with the general ********** in the thread? People have cried out for ffxi to be able to be minimized for ages, and finally SE listened. What's even better, having a legit windower will enable all the people who use windower to cheat through third party plugins to be sol.

This is an awesome change and great news.
Alright!!

Problem with all these glorius changes.... to little, to late. People know about FFXI. They have heard the complaints and the grudges.

It doesn't matter what a few people say is great about the game, people really remember the complaints and there are many of them out there.

Maybe if SE actually put effort into the game instead of just using it as a cashcow. You know, the wonders an official forum would do. Heck, even free MMO's like MU Online has official forums. People have been complaining about a windowed mode for YEARS now, and they just now changed their minds? People have been complaining about drop rates for YEARS and they are just now changing their minds?

Seems to me the populations are finally getting low enough where SE is trying to save the sinking ship.

Go play WoW and then tell me who has bad service. Then again, based on the all-caps typing, it looks like you're a WoW veteran. Could it be that you have a bad opinion of GM's because you were shouting like this in Whitegate and a GM threw you in jail?

An SE windowed version of the game will be nice, but I wonder if SE is going to add a process to the windowed version that will monitor for 3rd party tools... that will be very interesting to see.

I fail to see how that would be illegal.

SE could attach a process to the windower that monitors windower itself. Any information that is sent through the game that doesn't originate from within the game itself (i.e outside tools 3rd party tools) would red flag you. This process wouldn't scan your computer, it would just scan windower. Don't see how that would result in a lawsuit.

While a windowed mode will be nice, as others have noted, the options 3rd party tools can utilize are often just as wanted, if not moreso.

In any event, perhaps the most desired tool after the ability to alt+tab would be the expansion of macros. I can understand why in the beginning, particularly when Fishing was as non-interactive as it was, that line space was limited. However, I would suggest you offer the option of "Equipment Sets" that can be pulled from macros or typed strings to further take the allure from third party tools.

If you're not sure what I mean by that, it would be an additional setting in macros that lets you determine what is equipped in all body slots when the set is accessed via one line as opposed to 16. A "specific macro within a macro" may be a more roundabout explaination, but not to be confused with endless looping of macros that incite fears of botting.

From there, a chat option to let us filter "Equipment Changed." messages or have the game squish them all into one message so we maintain some semblence of a chatlog.

Beyond that, things like seeing other party members' TP, alliance MP, or distances would just be bonus stuff. They can be lived without, but macro swaps have pretty much come to stay. The only counter alternative would be to not allow us to swap while engaged with a mob, but I don't think that would be popular.

Can you please ask about possibility that when backing up a macro via the 4 slots available, that atleast one of there saves to server, so that you could transfer from ps2 to pc to xbox without having to re-write all your macros.

Hopefully I won't be Auto-Disconnecting from FFXI when I accidently Alt+Tab during Besieged. It's happened to me twice where I alt+tab only seconds before besieged ends. Only once where I alt+tab near the end and find I get kicked from the zone and warped to Whitegate when I log back in because the zone is full again.

I hope it is fullscreen-windowed mode as well. I don't want to see the blue bar at the top and the start menu on the bottom of my screen.

I'd say SE's HQ is a cool place, but the working conditions aren't as good as they used to be back when I used to work there. Purged a few good friends for the sake of saving money last year, and there's too many inner cliques to brown-nose to try and move up for my tastes. But that's just the bitter, jaded ex-employee in me. I'm happier at my current job (which, incidentally, is a much larger game company down the street).

Anyway, as for windowed mode, I couldn't care less as long as alt-tab in fullscreen mode is supported. Drop rate adjustments? It'd better be slightly up than lowered or shifting it to an entirely new mob altogether (you know it's a possibility). I hope you've got more (good) news coming, Pikko. I haven't had reason to log into FFXI for several weeks now, and it's gonna take some big things to pry me off of my warlock and back into Vana'diel.

Wouldn't it be something if getting it windowed required an extra payment of one dollar? I would sooo do that if I were Square Enix. So many players would pay, meaning extra bucks!
