Combine Tongue is for caster research, as is stated in a book or two on languages in-game found in Paineel and maybe Erudin.. Maybe other places, not completely sure on where else it could be found.

I have always heard the biggest problem there is the wyvren adds and the named dragons.

Yes. This zone is really. I usually suggest that people go in around Lvl 7, but at 6, if you can team with a Cleric you should do very well.
