Expert rifts are level 52 rifts designed for a group of five or more ascended. They have near the same difficulty as a tier one expert level dungeon. As of 1.3 there are six total expert rifts, one for each rift element. Abbess Katia for the Guardians and Raj Tahleed for the Defiants each offer a daily quest to complete one of the six expert rifts.
In order to open an expert rift you must obtain the a lure. Lures can be obtained in three ways. First at level 50 the weekly quest Taking the Fight becomes available. The Planar Coalesence will provide a random expert rift lure upon opening.
The second way to obtain a lure is to purchase a husk from one of the faction vendors. These husks (example: Husk: Revenge of the Icewatch) can be combined with five Malformed Soul to create the lure. These souls can be found in expert dungeons and the husks cost 250 planarite.
The third way to obtain lures is to simply purchase them from their faction vendor for 1750 planarite. You must be at Decorated notoriety level to purchase these directly.
Plane | Defiant Faction/Quest | Guardian Faction/Quest | Expert Rift Lure |
---|---|---|---|
Water | Mercurial Savants | Order of Purity | Lure: Revenge of the Icewatch |
Air | Zephyrian Collective | The Storm Inquisition | Lure: Storm Legion Elite |
Earth | The Shale Collegiate | Mendicant Order | Lure: Auricore Forerunners |
Life | Students of the Vale | Order of Life Serene | Lure: Primal Evolution |
Death | The Grim Disciples | Order of the Death Serpent | Lure: Redemption of Perdeen |
Fire | Ember Scholars | Order of the Flame | Lure: Explosive Tendencies |
To open an expert rift the lure must be taken to the appropriate zone and then used within range of an unopened minor or major rift tear. The group that opens a rift will be the only ones who can loot the chests that are spawned during the rift.
Each expert rift will have at least one, but likely more, timed phases. There are no penalties for bringing more than five ascended and doing so can make the encounter much easier.
The standard group configuration of one tank, one healer, and three DPS usually work well for these encounters. If the group has experience with tier one or tier two expert dungeons then they should be able to handle the expert rifts without too much trouble.

During the encounters the group has a chance to collect from two separate treasure chests. The first will spawn at the end of phase three of the rift and contain a random tier one level blue essence.
The second chest will spawn after the final stage of the rift has been completed and it will contain a random tier one blue essence and a random piece of tier one quality gear. All timed stages must have been completed before the timer ran out to get this chest. This second chest will also contain four Crystal Soucestones.
