Gunthak?Follow

#1 Dec 31 2003 at 11:00 PM Rating: Good
Why is Gunthak empty. I recently took my 35 Warrior to gunthak to PL him on the beach. I was shocked to see how good the XP was. Why is this zone not utilized? Any Ideas?

The main reason I think so little people hunt in Gunthak is that it is out of the way. The other reason is that it has a bit of a worse ZEM than Dawnshroud Peaks (the current hot 30 - 40 spot), not by much, maybe just a 5% difference, but there is one (I think the natural zem is 85% for all zones, plus the bonus some zones have). I also think that there are a great deal less players that own LoY than Luclin as well. I remember some classes (monk in particular) doing boycotts on it.

Another reason why this zone is underused is that it is a small bit more difficult than Dawnshroud Peaks or another mid level hunting ground. The mobs here hit slightly harder and have a bit more hp than in DSP (by no definition hard though), and there placement is a bit more troublesome than a zone with wanderers.

Despite all this, I came here in the 30's. Nice non-crowded zone, good variety, nice cash drops, and better than average zem. I would recommend it.

I agree with the above.

Gunthak is a great place for the 30-40s crowd, but is a bit too remote. Hell, Stonebrunt itself was almost perpetually barren beforehand. It's mostly populated by higher levels in transit, or people questing for spells.

Gunthak is a great zone for the appropriate levels.

Dawnshroud Peaks may have a slightly better experience rate, but there's one big advantage to Gunthak nobody mentioned:

Loot.

Dawnshroud offers very little at your level. One can make a tidy sum off the loot in Gunthak. Gems drop fairly regularly (among other things). When you're done with Gunthak, head over to Dulak. This is also a great place for exp and loot until your mid 50s.

The merchants and banker are just a short swim from the beach so even monks can loot!

Some players will only hunt in the zone that gives them the absolute fastest experience. That results in many very good exp/loot zones that are underutilized. Maybe it's just me, but it also makes the game culture seem a bit stagnant.

Call me a n00b, but...what is ZEM?
#7 Jan 02 2004 at 5:38 PM Rating: Decent
ZEM is yet another EQ acronym, it stands for Zone Experience Modifier.

The ZEM is used in two ways:
Certain zones have higher ZEMs to make them more attractive as a way of balancing annoyance factors - out of the way locations, underwater, more difficult mobs etc. (Kedge Keep, Grieg's End, Acrylia Caverns, Veksar). Other zones have really high ZEMs because they are newbie zones - Befallen, Crushbone, Paludal Caverns, Kurn's Tower and The Warrens.

The ZEMs aren't static, not too long ago they announced that they were increased the XP modifier in some zones as an attempt to make them more popular.

What might be of note is that both The Grey and Lake of Ill Omen at least used to have negative ZEMs as the only zones...so if you're leveling up a new character you might want to skip LOIO.

Just checked, the normal zone experience modifier is 75%. Luclin and Ykesha have natural bonuses of 10%. So Gunthak has an 85% zem, DSP has a 95% zem (from 10% bonus on top of natural SoL bonus), North Karana, being an old world zone, has a zem of 75%, and Paludal (this is why all the newbies flock here) has a zem of, get this, 185%.

Actually your numbers are a bit off there, Psyo.

The standard ZEM is 75 - not 75%, just 75. Your numbers would imply that XP in Paludal is almost 2.5 times as fast as it would be in North Karana, when in fact it's "only" 85% faster.
