I am new to everquest and need some help picking a good class. My friends that play are level 40 and up... I want a class that could catch up to them fairly quickly but still have fun doing so..any suggestions on a good first eq character?
Try a mixed class, like a shaman, that can bust heads AND cast spells, (and even get a pet, but not for a while).

Don't pick a character just to catch up to your friends. Play a character that looks fun to you. Check out the descriptions and such on this site (great job on stats, desc, etc. here) and pick one that appeals to you.
You will find that in the end, you'll get MUCH more enjoyment out of the character than you would if you "just catch up".
I started playing and have friends in the mid 30's to low 60's and they still come by to say hi, help out and just have fun. You'll get there, just have fun with it.
Again, just my opinion.

I myself would start up a Beastlord (and I have). They are very fun to play, somewhat due to the fact that they are pretty much balanced, unlike a great many other classes (under and over). They provide an excellent set of utilities (melee, slow, haste, pet, stat buffs, regen, mana regen, sow, heals, efficient hybrid 1:3 ratio direct damage spells, dots, etc.). They are not entirely reliable on getting groups, but they will be gladdly welcome in most groups when they want to get one. They are good soloers and can do so all the way up to 65.
I would say that you could quickly level a beastlord up to 40 if you know where to hunt and have some help at it. Most fun class I have played in my 3.5 year period playing EverQuest.

What classes are your friends? If they're all grouping together, you might want to pick a class that could compliment them.
