I think it’s the duty of the child to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.

Also the people who publish open-source research software must get some sadistic joy out of knowing anyone who wants to replicate their work is going to have to download 20 different random programs that are all required to make their software run, and somehow try to get them all to work together. Well now you have me curious what type Open-Source software you downloaded? I've used a lot of Open-source software programs, because I can't afford Adobe and Autodesk's stranglehold they have. haha

Well it's this stuff: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.jproteome.6b00028

Basically it's quality control software for a mass spectrometer. It runs in python, and has about 15 or so different packages you need to make it work. I had about 3 of those installed. My installation was getting pretty out of date anyway so I downloaded Canopy which gave me the majority of the packages. At that point I spent the hour or so downloading the remaining packages until I could run the main program on the test data they provided.

Once that was done it was a matter of seeing what it would take to get our data into a format the program could read to see if it would work for us. It turns out the imput it takes is generated by another open-source software package written in R. I spent some time downloading and looking into the program to see if we could get it to run here.

About this point I just gave up though. Problem was even if I got it to work the people that operate the instrument are biologists. Getting them to run an R package to generate something they would use a python package on without any sort of user-friendly GUI wasn't happening. I have no urge to write a GUI for someone else's software, so it all died out about then. On the plus side though I have some cool new tools on my desktop. Smiley: grin

Also, apparently Eve had another "biggest battle in online history" last night. 4,300+ nerds in a single system taxing the new hardware they just installed. People are going nuts in there at the moment. Smiley: lol

At least they're having stress tests. Better than when a game goes live and spends the next few days dealing with constant crashes.

No worries they still have those too. Smiley: wink

Though from what I've picked up on you can have more people fighting before it slows to the soul-crushing 10% speed. These big fights still seem to be enough to grind the game to a halt, which is fascinating (well, to me at least) because of the very low quantity of data that the game uses.

Pretty pictures and German words.

I'm proud to say I followed most of what you said, I don't have a job in IT, but I do have friends that do, I also dabble in it, I kinda feel like everyone needs to learn IT skills if they hope to protect their computers. I'll definitely be doing some extra reading though, thanks for the link! I was looking for a new thing to learn about today.

Eve is insane, I swear people could write movies based on the stuff going on in there. Have there been fan movies or book written yet? haha

God, that Supergirl series is super cringy. They say it gets drastically better (as in: someone must have fired the writer) after the first 5-6 episodes, but damn, I'm not sure I'll make it. So far it's been a cardboard copy of all the other "coming of age" superhero series that probably started with Smallville, most notably Arrow and The Flash (created by the same guys).

You've got the mysterious boss who seems to have his own sinister reasons for helping out the hero. You've got the hot sidekick and the funny sidekick who know the hero's secret and help out with logistics and communications. There's a love triangle between the girl, the nerdy soul mate, and the mature hot guy. The villain is of course someone from the hero's past. Bunch of 30-year-old supermodels posing as 20-year-old social outcasts.

Also, this is now James "Jimmy" Olsen. I'm all for diversity on TV, but they turned a ginger nerd into a black jock. That grinds my gears. And he can't act to save his life, so it all smells like affirmative action.

I guess I'll give it a few more chances. I'll admit, I'm interested in seeing how they supposedly dig this one out of the grave mid-season. Also, Melissa Benoist wears either skintight jeans or skirts in every episode. It... intrigues me.

It gets less cringy, though I'm not sure if that's because it actually gets less cringy or because you build a tolerance. Not particularly better, and it doesn't really stop being preachy either. There's a Flash / Supergirl crossover, and it's kind of cute. Maximum Awkward Geekiness between Barry and Kara. Really, the only thing I enjoy about Supergirl are the little Easter Eggs it offers to geeks, like the whole Red Kryptonite episode is full of 'em.

Yeah but who has ever heard of a Charlie in the Box?

I mean, besides my weird uncle who was in Vietnam.

I was just coming back here to say "Remember when I said "Is there a history book yet?"
I stumbled across that same video on PC Gamer! It's really dramatic. :D

CCP is riding a good wave right now. This big war slowly heating up over the last month or so (the fact that the catalyst for it was in-game theft just makes it all the more interesting), the book coming out, citadel expansion here shortly, their new VR game, will have more of an audience for their "fanfest" thing which is soon too.

Sure there's a money fight or two going on right now.

Also, in the proud tradition as the BDT doubling as my own personal twitter, I taught the oldest to play Monopoly last night. Went over the basic rules, and then mostly kicked back and watched her kick my butt. Went in thinking I would need to hold her hand through the whole thing, and was reduced in the end to reminding her she could buy more houses if she wanted to. Smiley: lol

It was her idea. Smiley: lol

It was my night to watch them while the Mrs. worked. The requests to play started early and did not relent until I finally got the 40 year old box out of the closet and gave it a go. There's already been requests to play again... Smiley: rolleyes

I'd say you kid is weird if I didn't know that kids are all weird. Mine has gone from having a cat-like hatred of baths to making it impossible to remove her from the tub.

Yeah, she's just weird, won't ask just going along with it.

Baths are awesome though, once they get to that age they can hold their head up. They're in an enclosed space, they want to stay there because it's cold outside the bath, the sound is muffled, they have toys to play with. Bath time makes for a happy dad.

Yeah, no. The last time bathtime was quiet we almost lost the toilet.

Someone who totally wasn't me nuh uh no way thought it was a good idea to tell her that her cloth dolls couldn't take baths with her because the bathtub was for big people and she deduced that since the toilet was smaller than the tub and similarly had water in it that spun and disappeared ...
