Jim Lee Reflects on DC Universe Online's Launch

Jim Lee is a legend in the world of comics. He's earned many titles throughout his career: artist for Marvel Comics, co-founder of Image Comics, founder of WildStorm and currently co-publisher of DC Comics. He's also the executive creative director for DC Universe Online, which just launched three weeks ago after five years in development.

Editor-in-Chief Darryl "Togikagi" Gangloff got the chance to sit down with Lee to reflect on the game's release and why he enjoys interacting with players. Lee also hints that lucky players may get the opportunity to have their characters featured in the pages of the upcoming DC Universe Online Legends bi-weekly comic, which comes out in early February. While it's not a confirmed plan, he hopes to make it a reality.

Smedley: DCUO is SOE's Fastest Selling Game

Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley announced on Twitter over the weekend that DC Universe Online is the fastest selling game in the history of the company:

"Working on out-of-stock problems for DCUO. It's our fastest selling game ever. Should have more inventory in Monday."

The tweet actually contained a minor typo since Smedley sent it from his iPhone, but he quickly quickly pointed out his mistake. He also mentioned that DC Universe Online was #1 in sales on Steam last week.

UPDATE: Massively noticed another Smedley tweet: "People are asking what the PS3 / PC split is on sales. It's 52% PS3 and 48% PC." It looks like console players are leading the pack.

DC Universe Online launched on Jan. 11. To see the game in action, check out episode 53 of the BFF Report.

BFF Report Ep. 53: DC Universe Online (Part 2)

This week's episode of the BFF Report has quite the story behind it. Mike B. aka Fony first attempted to check out DC Universe Online back in episode 51 prior to the game's launch. A bug involving teleporting enemies kept Fony from completely covering the game, which resulted in a very short episode.

In response, Sony Online Entertainment contacted Fony and attempted to pinpoint the cause of the bug. In the process, Fony and SOE President John Smedley became best friends forever. The bug was ultimately fixed and the live version of the game now works on Fony's computer.

That brings us to BFF Report episode 53. Fony is finally able to take a real look at DC Universe Online, so check out the video after the jump to hear his thoughts on questing, PvP, co-op instances and more!

SOE Opens Four More DC Universe Online Servers

A quick look at the recent status messages on DC Universe Online's Facebook page will show that game has been suffering from bouts of server issues and downtime. Due to increased demand, Sony Online Entertainment has opened four new servers:

PS3

  • Relentless (PvE)  US
  • Justice for All (PvE)  EU
  • Absolute Power (PvP)  EU

PC

  • Last Laugh (PvE)  US

According to a recent tweet by SOE President John Smedley, the existing PlayStation 3 servers were literally filled to capacity earlier this week. He then tweeted again last night to announce these four new servers and revealed that SOE is preparing to add even more servers in the future.

SOE President Helps Squash Fony's DCUO Bug

As you may remember, Mike B. aka Fony ran into some technical difficulties while playing the DC Universe Online beta for BFF Report episode 51. A bug involving teleporting enemies kept Fony from completely covering the game, which resulted in a very short episode. This bug ultimately allowed Fony and Sony Online Entertainment President john Smedley to become best friends forever... at least that's how Fony puts it in the latest episode of This Week in MMO over at GameBreaker.TV.

Fony recently received a conference call from SOE tech support in an attempt to sqaush the bug, and he was surprised to discover that Smedley was on the other end of the line. The call lasted about an hour, and SOE decided to build an exact replica of Fony's machine to find out what was causing the error.

Upon further investigation, SOE was able to implement a fix for the teleporting mobs bug. Fony has confirmed that the live version of DC Universe Online works on his computer, and he will be featuring the game in a future episode of the BFF Report.

For more details on Fony's interaction with SOE tech support and Smedley, check out the first 15 minutes of TWIMMO episode 31 after the jump. Keep watching for discussions on League of Legends, Lord of the Rings Online, Champions Online and more!
