E3 Demonstration of DC Universe Online

One of the many exciting things about DC Universe Online is the fact that the game will be available for play the PC and the Playstation 3. We've been dying to see how the game looks (and more importantly plays) on the PS3 and at long last, our waiting has come to fruition. For the first time, we're able to bring you a live PS3 gameplay demo from Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming Super Hero MMORPG, DC Universe Online! The video in it's entirety is available after the jump.

Enter Wally West

While it's been obvious for some time that the Flash was going to be making an appearance in DC Universe Online, Sony Online Entertainment made it official today with this months character spotlight. Wally West was originally known as the first "Kid Flash" who grew up to be a time-honored member of the Justice League. He can run at the speed of sound and even vibrate molecules so fast that he can travel through solid objects.

While SOE hasn't announced many of the "Rogues" that will directly oppose this hero of speed; it doesn't take much research to find a full list of potential villains. Make sure to check out our DC Universe Online media gallery and stay tuned for more information about Flash (Wally West) after the jump.

SOE Reveals Doomsday in DC Universe Online

While the DC Universe Online team gave us our first glimpse of Doomsday in a video posted back in February, Sony Online Entertainment officially revealed Doomsday today in a press release.

Whether you're a DC Comics fan or not, chances are you know who Doomsday is. He's the villain who killed Superman back in 1992, and the death of the icon was covered by the national and international media. So it seems only fitting Doomsday would be a part of this MMORPG.

Doomsday was born on the planet Krypton, just like Superman. He is power and strength personified, but he can also think and reason. And of course Lex Luthor is obsessed with capturing him to turn him into the ultimate minion. So will you be fighting against Doomsday alongside Superman, or will you be helping Luthor battle the heroes to nab Doomsday and turn him into a soldier of destruction?

Meet Brian Stevens, DCUO Lead Environment Artist

Brian Stevens, the lead environment artist for DC Universe Online, has posted a blog entry and video on the game's official Myspace page to introduce himself to fans and discuss how various teams are bringing the environments in the MMO to life.

In the video, he focuses mainly on Metropolis and Gotham City to showcase the differences between the two cities. Metropolis is rich in color, while Gotham is dark and grungy. Stevens has been in the gaming industry for 11 years and actually started his career as a comic book colorist, so his enthusiasm in moving these environments from the page to the virtual world is apparent.

In case you were wondering, his favorite comic character is Batman and if he could choose to have any power, he'd pick flight.

Introducing Solomon Grundy

Sony Online Entertainment has given us the rare opportunity to introduce a new villain that has at long last been added into DC Universe Online. Solomon Grundy, or as I call him "Zombie Hulk", has found his way from the swamp to the city and if the media we've been sent is any indication, he's ready to kick some Superhero butt.

Solomon Grundy™ is part zombie and part plant, a bizarre, centuries-old half-human life form filled with confused anger.  At times he is a rampaging monster, at others a calculating and coldblooded villain.

His enhanced strength makes him a threat even to the DC Universe's strongest heroes.  As an immortal, massive blows or injuries can't kill or hurt him -  afterwards, he simply regenerates to rise again.

Recently, he's been seen skulking in swamps, sewers, and abandoned buildings in both Metropolis and Gotham City. Denizens of these cities beware the low growl of "Solomon Grundy, born on a Monday…"

Check out our exclusive screenshots. If you'd like a closer look, we're also hosting Concept Art and Renders.

New DCUO Video Focuses on Character Customization

DC Universe Online Art Director Jared Carr has posted a new video of screenshots on the game's Myspace site showcasing the level of detail that will be available in the character creation process. In addition to numerous close-up shots of costumes, the video shows us "a few new locations in Metropolis, some Lexcorp Shocktroopers and vehicles, and the S.T.A.R. Labs Defense Team characters."

Comic book artist Jim Lee, along with his Wildstorm team, designed a series of costumes for the game, and Carr wanted to show them off as a prototype of the customization system for eager fans. "While we’re not ready to show the full system yet, these shots should give you an idea of just a few of the many themes and options we want to provide our players," he said in a blog entry.

Carr and Lee were part of the DCUO panel at the New York Comic Con last month. In case you missed it, we have a recap of the entire panel. You can also read Carr's entire Myspace post after the jump.

NYCC: Interview with Marv Wolfman on DCUO

Earlier in the week Sony Online Entertainment announced that famed comic book writer Marv Wolfman was joining the DC Universe Online team as the third major talent from the comic book industry. Fortunately for you, we were in New York for Comic Con and had the chance to ambush an unsuspecting Marv, talking him into sitting down with us and even answering a few questions. During the interview we discovered how much of a gamer Marv really is. Calico Vision for the win my friends!

Tamat : To start, welcome to the DCUO team. It's a cool project to be on, I'm sure.

Marv Wolfman : Yeah, I've been waiting for it to happen, because I've known about it for a while. But, now it's finally at the stage that I can come in.

Togikagi : To start off, how long ago were you approached with this?

NYCC: DCUO Panel Answers Fans' Questions

The DC Universe Online team held a panel on Saturday at the New York Comic Con to discuss the game with fans and introduce legendary comic writer Marv Wolfman to the fold. Wes Yanagi, the senior producer for DCUO, welcomed the members of the panel before jumping into questions. As Yanagi pointed out, DCUO executive creative director and famed artist Jim Lee, writer Geoff Johns and Wolfman needed no introduction for the crowd of comic book fans. Creative Director Jens Andersen, Art Director Jared Carr and Studio Creative Director Chris Cao filled out the table to answer numerous questions regarding the upcoming MMO.

Yanagi began the session by asking Lee to talk a little bit about the challenges of turning two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional images for the game.  “When I draw my characters, they’re not necessary meant to be turned around in 3D,” Lee said, noting it was “rude awakening” he learned to quickly overcome. The artist said he envisions the ideal version of the DC universe as he oversees the creation of concept art. For example, he said the Metropolis in the game will be a composite of all other versions. Even smaller details, such as the size of Batman’s ears or the design of his belt, have to be taken into account.

NYCC: Prepare to Fight in the DC Universe

I’m here at the New York Comic Con with the rest of the Allakhazam crew and I am excited to report that I was able to get a first-hand look at open PvP in DC Universe Online, courtesy of Jens Andersen, the game’s creative director. As a huge comic book fan, I realize how much pressure DCUO is under to appeal to both hardcore DC Comics aficionados, as well as gamers who are only familiar with the names Superman and Batman. Well, I can personally say at this stage in the design process that PvP in DCUO will make every gamer feel like they’re locked in an epic battle between heroes and villains that actually follows comic book rules. For example, people with super powers are generally really hard to knock completely out of the fight.

Sony Online Entertainment’s DCUO booth was flooded with convention-goers throughout the first day who were eager to catch a glimpse of the game, and Jens was just as excited to show off open PvP in the heart of Metropolis. Before we get into the PvP action, it’s worth noting that Metropolis is huge. As our premade character soared into the sky and buildings vanished into the distance, Jens noted that we were looking at only 1/8 of the city. It really is massive to see, and the art direction of Jim Lee can really be seen in the architecture. And once more pedestrians are added and traffic begins to move through the streets, it will honestly feel like a living, breathing city.
