Review: Razer Naga Hex

I’ve been itching to try out the Razer Naga Hex for some time. With six mechanical buttons on the side, Razer claimed it was ideally suited for MOBAs and Action RPGs. But I had a sneaking suspicion it would also be fantastic in more recent MMOs such as Guild Wars 2, where the game’s limited action set would lend itself to the reduced number of buttons.

I shouldn’t be surprised, but the Naga Hex worked flawlessly with every game I threw at it. MOBAs, limited-action MMOs, shooters and RPGs were all ably assisted by those larger, more responsive and more tactile buttons. Available in Razer Green, Wraith Red (reviewed), and now a League of Legends Collector’s Edition, there’s a version to suit most desktops.

Holly Speaks on Game Update 66

Today Holly "Windstalker" Longdale, EverQuest II Producer, published SOE's plans for Game Update 66 which includes the legacy zones of Cobalt Scar and Sirens Grotto.

Named Scars of the Awakened, Game Update 66 promises new content in Velious for crafters, questers, and raiders. and teases "the Ages End Prophecy looms with its promise to see Kerafyrm - Norrath's most evil, powerful dragon - bring a violent end to the world."

GU66 is expected on Test on April 2, and is slated for launch on April 30, 2013.  Read the entire EQII Producer's Letter on the official forums.

Review: Razer Taipan

The Razer Taipan is an unusual mouse for ZAM to review. It’s not specifically designed for MMOs; the precision sensors and solid grip make it more suitable for first person shooters. But if you’re a left-handed gamer that’s been left out in the cold, or the mass of macro buttons on the Naga don’t appeal, the Taipan is one weapon you’ll want to wield.

EQ & EQII: Many F2P Restrictions to Be Lifted

A big announcement from SOE today: many of the free-to-play restrictions will be lifted soon on EverQuest and EverQuest II Free and Silver membership accounts. Here's a look at the changes F2P players can soon enjoy.

As of mid-next week, we're going to be removing the following free-to-play restrictions in EverQuest and EverQuest II. Free and Silver players will now have access to all of the following options:

  • We are opening up ALL CLASSES.*
  • We are opening up ALL RACES. **
  • All bag slots are unlocked.
  • All players can now use the shared bank slots.
  • The quest journal restrictions are lifted entirely. Quest away!
  • Additionally, EverQuest is allowing all players to send delivery parcels! (This change is for a game-specific change in EQ, so it doesn't happen in EQII.)

* "All free classes" exception for EQII only: Beastlord is still only accessible via the "Age of Discovery" expansion pack.
** "All free races" exception for EQII only: The Freeblood race is still an SC-only marketplace option.

Head over to EverQuest II's site to read the full article on these changes.

Player Event: Ribbitribbit Day (Guk Server)

Almost one year ago players from all over the EverQuest II community got together to build a special playground for a young child who had terminal cancer. Today (Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 1pm Eastern on the Guk server) is a day to celebrate the memory of Ribbitribbit as well as the community who invested so much into making his day special. Here is the text from the player event posting:

Last year on March 10, and in the week before that date, Norrathians made gaming history. Over 600 unique accounts came together from servers across Norrath for one purpose. To give a very special little Froglok some wonderful playgrounds and a very special party in his honor.

For those of you who weren't involved, we started a guild and leveled it to 70 for a t3 guild hall in less than 70 hours. We not only decorated Ribbitribbitt's TT island retreat but 3 other prestige houses were donated and the t3 hall still looks spectacular.

So many of you told me stories in the days and months that followed of fellow adventurers that you had lost and of whom you had fond memories. I myself have lost a few friends along the way.

This year we want to remember the feeling of community that we gained that day. We want to celebrate not only Ribbitribbitt, but all the friends we have lost along our adventures. And we want to celebrate the friendships we have made that are still going strong. Myrose, Ribbitribbitt's mother, and I would like to invite you to this celebration.

It will be held SATURDAY MARCH 9 at 1 eastern

Raise Your Steins to Brewday!

Brewday kicks off on March 7th and your faithful ZAM staff has been working hard to bring you all the help you need. While drunkenly stumbling through the Bar of Brell we were guided to this year's new quest by Tellar Blackswell and discovered that Jimmy is more volatile in his drinking habits. In the Butcherblock Mountains the pesky goblins trying to ruin the local Brewday festivities can once again be gleefully knocked over by carpets made of clovers. The event also features a new crafting scroll, Brewday Accoutrements to Craft IV, and a few new achievements.

Back by popular demand we also offer you our updated Brewday Quest Tracker! Happy drinking!

Exclusive Q&A: Kekai Kotaki

If you're into video game art, then it's likely the subject of our Q&A is already well-know to you. Indeed, Kekai Kotaki has spent most of his professional career making sure the games we love to play look as amazing as they possibly can.

Kotaki began at ArenaNet, seeing to it that amazing visuals became a part of the Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 legacy. He departed ArenaNet just before the release of Guild Wars 2, which raised an eyebrow or two. But as he explains, it was all just a part of following his dream. After leaving the only game studio he had ever known, he spent some time with a little company called Bungie working on a game called, let's see...  Destiny, I think it was. Even though he's no longer with Bungie, with any luck, we just may see some of his artwork represented in the game.

His style is unmistakeable, and his talent is immense. Yet he's a great, down to earth guy who just loves what he does and was happy to share some of that enthusiasm with us!
