Escape to Erebor

There are many glorious battles throughout the Lord of the Rings. In the closing chapters of Tolkien’s epic saga, the monumental struggles at Minas Tirith and the Black Gate of Morannon marked a shift in the tide against Sauron’s dark shadow.

But as that Third Age drew to a close, similar conflicts were unfolding across Middle Earth. It’s these skirmishes and sieges that are the focus of the tenth update for Lord of the Rings Online. Concluding the Riders of Rohan instance pack, Turbine takes us on a journey from Dale to the Lonely Mountain.

EVE Online Passes 500,000 Subscribers

CCP Games today announced that EVE Online has grown to include over 500,000 subscribers, marking ten years of consecutive growth for the spacefaring sandbox MMO. The news comes after recently launching Retribution, the game’s 18th free expansion, and re-launching in China with partner TianCity.

After working on the game for some 13 years, CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson is justly proud of the achievement. “For me, this is a true testament that EVE can live on forever, as long as we do right by her. We have not come to this point alone; millions of players have helped push us to this milestone. I now know in my mind what I previously only believed in my heart: that EVE will outlive us all.”

Featured Guide: Harvesting

Harvesting is how crafters in EverQuest II get most of the materials to ply their trades.  Whether you're a crafter on a mission for a cute kid on the Isle of Mara or an adventurer looking to make a little coin you might find this guide handy.

Our Harvesting Guide explains how harvesting works, how rare rare materials are, and what you can do to improve your luck.  Along the way it mentions harvesting quests and will tell you where specific resources are found. If you've ever wondered where to go to harvest at a particular skill level, we've got that too.  Have a look at A Harvester's Guide.

Land of the Giants

There are many tales in Dungeons and Dragons Online. In Return to Gianthold, the 17th expansion for Turbine’s veteran MMO, it starts with a betrayal between two powerful races.

Long ago, a dragon leader known as The Truthful One slew the Stormreaver, leader of the giants. Seizing the moment, he transformed himself into an undead dracolich, sundering the giants’ civilization. Though several ages have passed, the Stormreaver has returned, thirsting for vengeance on The Truthful one and seeking adventurers to lend their aid.

Many of us at ZAM have been quite flagrant in our anticipation for WildStar. One of the things that makes the game stand out is how it bristles with unabashed personality; an identity quite unlike any other AAA MMO on the market.

One of the biggest driving forces behind the humor and identity of the game is Chad “Pappy” Moore, Lead Narrative Designer and therefore caretaker of all things story in WildStar. It was my distinct pleasure to chat with Chad about the importance of the various forces that will define the game for players from the first moment and throughout their play experience.

In this, the first part of our conversation, I will cover Chad’s insights into WildStar’s story, The Dominion in general and specifically the Cassians.

FireFall: From the Clouds

Over the last few years, cloud computing has become a marvel of the business world. By being able to order computing power on demand, IT departments have been able to eliminate the costs associated with commissioning servers and kitting out data centers. It also provides flexibility, supporting firms like Netflix, Spotify and Pinterest as their user base grows.

Can cloud computing support a full-fledged MMO while still providing a stable, low latency experience to gamers? The developer behind sci-fi shooter MMO FireFall believed that it could, going on to convincingly prove it during an evolving, long-term beta that started earlier in 2012. You can even judge the fruits of their endeavour yourself this weekend, as Red 5 Studios are holding an open beta from February 22nd to 25th.
