Exclusive Interview and Screens of The Berserker

We sat down with executive producer Brian Knox and story consultant and class expert Scott James Magner for part one of ZAM's exclusive look at TERA's most terrifying class: the Berserker.

In-Depth TERA Interview with Brian Knox

You voted on our Zam poll and overwhelmingly chose TERA as your most anticipated MMO for E3. So we tracked down Brian Knox, Executive Producer at En Masse Entertainment and asked him our toughest questions, many of which we got from your own forum comments. Here's our pre-E3, sneak peek into the much anticipated world of TERA.

Guild Wars 2: Examining the Combat System

As we have mentioned in our last two Guild Wars 2 stories, we had the incredible opportunity to take a trip to the ArenaNet studios, where the development team is hard at work on the sequel to one of the bestselling MMO (and PC) games of all time, Guild Wars. In this interview, we sit down with designers Isaiah Cartwright and Jon Peters to discuss how the combat system has been developed for the sequel.

Guild Wars 2: Reinventing Tyria - Part Two

As the ZAM staff discussed a few days ago, we had the incredible opportunity to take a trip to the ArenaNet studios, where the development team is hard at work on the sequel to one of the bestselling MMO (and PC) games of all time, Guild Wars. While at the offices, we sat down with two of the foremost Guild Wars lore experts at the studio, Bobby Stein and Ree Soesbee, who were kind enough to answer our questions about the story and setting surrounding Guild Wars 2.

In the first part of our interview, we discussed some of the general concepts people will find in the storytelling in GW2, and in this part of the interview we opted to go even more in-depth and really get the low down on the Sylvari and what it takes to really be a solid voice over artist. So keep reading to find out more, but make sure you check out part one of our “Reinventing Tyria” series to make sure you haven’t missed anything!

The Future of DDO: An Interview with Fernando Paiz

Last year, Dungeons and Dragons Online turned the MMO world on its head by not only announcing that they were going to a hybrid free-to-play business model, but also by demonstrating that a free-to-play game, even one that started as a subscription title, can be extremely successful. At this year’s LOGIN conference, the ZAM staff caught up with the game’s Executive Producer, Fernando Paiz, to talk about the future of DDO both in the short term with Update 5 and in the much longer term, going over subjects like additional races, classes, and – in a surprising move – a new type of content that’s going to be added to the game.

Many things are hinted at in this conversation, and obviously plans at Turbine can change, but if you’re interested in the future of Dungeons and Dragons Online and where the team is headed, make sure you give this article a read!

Guild Wars 2 Interview: Reinventing Tyria

It seems like the folks at Guild Wars 2 have set a blistering pace for the release of game information over the past month. With the unveiling of the Elementalist and the corresponding gameplay associated with this epic spellcaster and beyond, we’ve learned more about the game than we had garnered throughout the past few years since the title’s unveiling. From skills to dynamic events to combat, we’re starting to really see what kind of systems we might expect in the game.

However, one of the areas that we’re still trying to learn more about is the actual world that exists in Guild Wars 2. We do know a few key facts regarding elder dragons and chronology, but the GW2 designers and storytellers have remained fairly hush-hush on everything regarding the newest race – the Sylvari – and some of the more in-depth, character-based interactions that players will be experiencing while playing their new avatars.

So while the ZAM team was in Seattle for the LOGIN 2010 conference, we took a trip out to the ArenaNet studios to find out exactly what’s going on in the latest iteration of Tyria. We definitely learned some new tidbits… so much that we had to split our interview into two different articles! We were lucky enough to sit down with the "lore gurus" Bobby Stein and Ree Soesbee, so they had plenty to say about the different ways they've gone about building their expanded world. Additionally, we’ll be releasing another interview on combat and gameplay soon, so stay tuned folks; we have a whole GW2 blowout on the way!

Star Trek Online: "Season One and Beyond"

The last time ZAM spoke with Star Trek Online executive producer Craig Zinkievich, in early February, the MMO had just launched and thousands of fans throughout North America were finally getting their first glimpse of the new persistent-world 'Trek universe. After our initial previews of STO's ship and avatar gameplay, ZAM's last Q&A with Zinkievich dealt with many of the community-related issues raised by fans on STO's own forums. In addition, he provided a few clues about new content, some of which culminated in last month's "Season One" patch update.

It's been almost three months since Star Trek Online's official launch and we've seen a variety of new features, updates and fixes introduced since then. Special Task Force missions are released every few weeks and "Season One" marked the MMO's first major content update. Several other new features, like the "Tribble" public test server, is helping STO overcome many of the post-launch issues it originally faced.

In today's Q&A, ZAM goes back to Zinkievich to learn more about "Season One" and beyond. What insights did Cryptic's development team glean from the recent content update and Special Task Force missions? What's in store for future "Season" updates, and what can max-rank players look forward to until then? We also ask about the upcoming "death penalty" and "difficulty slider" features that players requested, and learn that the developers are working on a new mini-game based on "Dabo" (the casino-like game referenced many times in the TV series). Check out the full Q&A after the jump for these details and more.

ZAM talks with Burda:ic about Land of Chaos Online

When it comes to our world of MMORPGs, it can be quite difficult to stand out amongst so many competing faces. Some MMOs differentiate themselves via flashy colours and impressive skills, while others seek to claim attention by promising fantastical additions that turn out to be standard concepts upon further examination. Either way, our MMO industry is in dire need of some new innovation, and one of those MMORPGs that may be leading the pack is "Land of Chaos Online."

Currently in development for a 2010 release, Land of Chaos Online promises to be an action-packed game with thirty unique characters and a gameplay style unlike any other MMORPG currently on the North American market. As well, LOCO will feature "DotA" style gameplay, with players given the opportunity to fight against other players in small arena settings and other maps.

Ultimately, we were intrigued by this interesting combination of, what we consider to be, some great new concepts, so we decided to reach out to talk with Burda:ic, the publishers of LOCO, about their upcoming game and some of their expectations of what this new, innovative MMORPG will bring to the industry.

League of Legends: Twisted Treeline Dev Q&A, Pt. 1

Last September, in our original League of Legends closed-beta preview, we praised the MMORTS hybrid as a particularly bright shining star in the burgeoning MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game genre. Influenced by the cult-classic DotA (Defense of the Ancients) gameplay, the free-to-play League of Legends is still maintaining its post-launch momentum, as we explained in our retrospective "Growing Up All On Its Own" feature story. Since then, the developers at Riot Games finally unveiled the long-awaited "Twisted Treeline" map, which introduced 3v3 teaming and facilitates new gameplay strategies.

Lately, players could only access the Twisted Treeline map in "Practice" mode, but as you're about to discover in our following Q&A with Richard Hough, Associate Technical Director at Riot Games, the wait is finally over…the new map, for "Matchmaking" mode, was released just yesterday! In our Q&A, we ask Hough about the new gameplay and Champion strategies that Twisted Treeline brings to the table, and the ongoing "balancing act" to maintain it. We also sneak in a few commonly-asked questions raised by the player community about future maps, additional game modes and extra Rune/Mastery pages. In this special two-part feature, we decided to play a few Twisted Treeline matches to get a first-hand impression of the new 3v3 gameplay. Click past the jump to read our Q&A with Hough, and check back tomorrow for ZAM's Twisted Treeline gameplay preview.
