March 10th Patch Notes

Here are the notes from today's patch: March 10th, 2004 ------------------------ Headlines ------------------------ Combines work again! Melee Part II! A new story has been added to your storybook! The grammar police have invaded EQ and they have made many minor spell, item and quest text fixes that are too numerous to list here. We'd like to thank all of the players that took time to provide feedback regarding the melee changes. We'd also like to send a special thanks to all of the players that helped us test the additions on the Test and Beta servers. All of the input we received helped to shape the improvements you've seen in the melee classes. Please continue to give your feedback on the melee system or anything else that you feel requires attention. It does make a difference. Over the last several months there have been several new additions to EverQuest aimed at increasing the desirability and relative power of pure melee classes. - Discipline timers were revamped, allowing greater freedom and frequency of use. - Endurance bar was added as a limited resource to power melee abilities and disciplines. - Warriors received an innate 5 percent increase in their ability to absorb damage. - Warriors received the Incite line of abilities, giving them a new tool for aggro management. - Monks received the Phantom Call line of abilities, giving them a new tool for pulling. - Several new disciplines were introduced for all three classes. The endurance system and the separation of the discipline timers have provided us with new tools to add interesting and powerful abilities in the future for melee classes. You can count on seeing new disciplines and abilities as the game progresses and as situations arise that require new abilities to effectively balance class power. We will continue to evaluate the melee system for both balance and enjoyment. We will also continue to review and make changes to each individual class as needed. Class balance is an important part of any multiplayer game and requires constant attention. Thanks for helping make EverQuest a great game. Items ------------------------ We have replaced the spell-like effects on items which produced the following effects: Attack, HP Regen, Mana Regen, Haste and Damage Shield with actual statistics. The effects on the item have not changed they are just set up in a new way that we hope will allow for more item functionality in the future. Several Gates smithed weapons have had their damage and delay adjusted to be more in line with the difficulty in crafting them. The Copper Hammer of Striking will no longer proc for wielders below level 50. The Wailing Coral Staff is now two handed blunt. Bolas are now one-handed projectile rather than ammo. Bola ranges have been adjusted slightly. All bolas that can proc will now do so. All items that had the "Cleave" series of effects removed, have had them returned. The drop rate for the following Epic Quest items has been increased slightly: - Essence of a Vampire - Decrepit Hide - Staff of Elemental Mastery (earth) Expedition zones ------------------------- You will now have to wait 5 minutes before you are able to accept another expedition zone. Tradeskills ------------------------- In order to correct many of the issues with the new tradeskill interface it was necessary to remove all learned and favorite recipes. However the system should now work better overall. The sell prices for Saltwater Tuna and Saltwater crab, as well as the price for any item made from them, have been reduced. Rainbow Trout should now be tradeable. If you are not a gnome, you should no longer be able to tinker with a deluxe toolkit kit. If you are a gnome, please tinker away. You should now be able to properly search for recipes. The trivial level for brewing Fish Wine has been adjusted. Berserkers ------------------------- Some berserker abilities have had their endurance cost changed. The duration of Confusing Strike has been reduced. Berserkers should no longer be told that they can bash at level 6. The berserker guildmaster in the Plane of Knowledge has been taught throwing and parry and is ready to train berserkers in their use. Spells ------------------------- Some Gates of Discord spells should now drop a little more often. Several heal spells for Gates of Discord have been modified slightly. The shadow knight Ancient Spell: Bite of Chaos should now work as intended. NPC's ------------------------- Hierophant Granix should now give the correct text in Cabilis. Trimdet Trueheart in Abysmal Sea is less of a snob and should now speak with you correctly. If you tell Brevik Kalaner in Abysmal what items you [need back], he will return to you any items you've just given him. Tribute ------------------------- A few items have had their tribute value adjusted. Gift of the Enchanters should now work correctly. You should no longer be able to donate containers with items inside for favor. Persistent Boon should now give the proper effect. Alternate Advancement ------------------------- Dire Charm will no longer reset after being resisted as the ability was successfully initiated. Dire Charm should now reset when used on an NPC that is too high in level. Miscellaneous ------------------------- Corrected a faction issue with the wizard epic. The monk "Phantom" line of abilities should no longer be resisted in the level 65 "hard" LDoN Adventures. The rogue's "Assassin's Strike" skill line ability will be re-introduced with the next update. The Shining Bloodstone will now be restricted to 2-handed weapons. Any who have placed this augmentation in a 1-handed weapon will find the augmentation on their cursor when they log in. If you find that you have no practical use for the 2-handed augmentation, please petition and a suitable 1-handed replacement will be made available to you. - The EverQuest Team

SOE nerfed Permafrost big time! you no longer can get Permafrost crystals, words, Runes, pages, or Ore off goblins now. they turned all that stuff in to cloth caps. (sells for less then 2 gold) I was getting some exp and making good money off the Permafrost crystals at 150pp in bazaar.

but if they fix it the goblins will be light blue or green and no longer worth the time.

Befallen was a good spot for necros to get bone chips untill they added the horse quest. all the skellys in there ecpt the "Elf skelly" don't drop "Bone Chips" I think it has been like clost to a year sence they did so and you still don't get bone chips.

Yea Casual players really can not enjoy the full game anymore. I mean back in the old days of Kunark and Velious Even the casual players could enjoy some of the higher end zones such as old world planes, Temple of Veeshan, etc. Sure there was always the hardcore zones like Veeshans Peak, Sleepers Tomb, but 1 or 2 zones per expansion was never a big deal. Then comes along Planes of Power where you have to do insanely difficult tasks just to be aloud to enter most of the zones. Plane of Time of course will never be viewed by the casual player, in fact many of us probably won't ever see the elemental planes. Its not that we are not good enough to take the stuff in these zones, its only cause #1 your high end guilds only want people who live to play the game, and #2 your average guild just can't get enough support to do these quests/tasks.

Now as if that wasn't bad enough, now we got Gates of Discord where 95% of the zones are meant for Plane of Time equiped guilds. This expansion was the biggest waste of money, and far as I am concerned falsely advertised. Lets see a level 50 to 59 enojy more then 1 or 2 of the new zones in GOD. Of course when you complain to SOE about wanting money back they stick there TOS in your face and say forget it your money is ours.

I know it was the designers intentions of haveing those weapons to use the rec level, but how long did they leave it to where they didn't? People, especially casual players, Have spent alot of plat buying up weapons such as Weighty Polearms, CHOS, Stained Axe of the Scions, etc etc for there charactors now to find they are absolutely worthless. Problem is almost every weapon out there with a rec level on it is pretty much junk if your high enough to use it. If there going to nerf that, they could have at least lowered the rec levels on them to a more fair level. Like the Weighty Polearm outta have about a rec level of 30 or 35 on it, Whens the last time you seen a level 50 use a Weighty Polearm for anything other then practicing there 2h slash?

I am just realyl sick of them making expansions that you can't use. I mean Planes of Power I hunt about 4 zones (POI, PON, BOT, POV) Thats about it. Gates of Discord I hunt 1 zone, Natimbi... and only reason I can hunt it is cause my main is a druid, I have never actually gotten a group in this zone.

In any case I finnally learned my lesson. Assumeing anymore expansions comes out I refuse to buy any of them. Im sick of spending $30 for a expansion only to find a couple of new zones huntable. And no way I will ever play another game that involves SOE or VERENT after Im done with Everquest. If I didn't have so much time and effort put into EQ Id probably move on to another game.

what about LDoN? that's geared to all lvls and all types of players in fact i know a good number of casual players that absolutely love it becuase now they can just hop into an adv and know that they'll only be on 90 mins at latest.

and dont forget LoY that was strictly for lower lvls (the zones anyways) i have not even set foot into it i only bought it for maps and dyes and bank space

even PoP was a good thing for all lvls, below 46 can use it for travel and 46+ for uber exp.

EQ is NOT only for the hardcore player, yes higher end PoP and GoD zones are but if you're not willing to put the time into the game as people in my guild and other high end guilds do then i guess you'll haveta settle for looking at the screenshots

I understand that a previous poster upset you and all caps is the equivalent of shouting, but did you think the rest of us need/want to wade thru an entire meesage -SHOUTED- at?

Your rebuttal would be taken more seriously if handled in a more mature manner than lock the cap lock and pound out your thoughts :-)

Casual players are HATED by sony. Sony wants indpeth computer geeks, and computer geeks in denial (like me) to pay them 13 a month.
RE: yea
# Mar 15 2004 at 6:44 AM Rating: Default
Are you nuts? Sony *loves* casual players, they receive the same fee from them as they do from hardcore geeks, and use less computer time serving them. But it's the hardcore players that make all the noise, so of course they get all the attention. Sony spends just enough time working on stuff for the casual player to keep them around, then focusses the rest of it's resources on keeping their hardcore fans happy. What's wrong with that?

if you would take the time to read the whole post and not just the first few lines you may see his point. he is not saying the game does not offer anything for the casual player his complaint is about sony creating expansions that are mainly for the people who live to play the game. he hit the nail on the head with what he said about the GOD expansion pack about the only thing GOD offered to the casual player was being able to fish for pp and they only left that their long enough to boost the sales of their latest pander to the uber guilds expansion pack.

You know time after time SOE has nerfed one aspect or another of the game that seriously effects the way casual players make make any real money. Tradskills have always been and should be a decent way to make some cash. On many of the servers the prices you see in the bazaar or what people are asking for items are overinflated to the point of idiocy. The Casual player has to just be in the right place right time to be able to upgrade unless they can generate a decent cashflow. From my point of view I am foiled at every turn when trying to make enough to upgrade my +55 Wizard. First PoP comes out kills all the porters ability to make cash when they introduced the books. As a wizard this becomes compounded since many people dont even offer to donate when asking for a TL. Translocate to many locations still has a spell component cost.

Thing is SoE doesn't want casual players they want players who will spend every bit of available time playing their game, so they make it nearly impossible to compete with the players that do.

Here came fishing I was already close to max when GoD came out (183 or something like that) Ansnd I happened across the selling part on my own the second or third day after I got the expansion. I saw the nerf to the key coming After my first round (it was easy once I got to 200 skill to have caught 5 or 6 keys in an hour thats close to 350 plat an hour just with turning in the keys and selling the potion. I didn't complain it was broke and needed fixing. I figured The fish sell back would get Nerfed as well but not at the level they did. I camped the night before the patch with several backpacks that would have brought between 500 and 600 plat. Total Platnium I received after the patch 1pp 5g whoa can't SoE do anything in moderation. Heck they refuse to clean up their netcode or their system resource usage. But spend so much time "fixing" things in the name of "it's not how the designers intended". Yeah they dont intend for casual players to be able to compete in their broken overinflated economy. Oh they'll have things so you can play but You'll never have they Top of the line best gear unless you do little else but play everquest.

Will I stop playing eq No I enjoy meeting people and Have many people I enjoy playing eq with. Which is the only redeaming factor left in Everquest if you ask me.

AS to putting recomended level on everything wouldn't do much good it's like the many pieces that have effects you will never benifit from at the level it requires to get them. To many to list to where there is "insertFocuseffecthere"1 drops off level 30, 40 and even 50th level creatures and the effect is only good for spells under 20th level give me a break. It should drop off creatures in that level range, the NPC should be no more than 24th level.

SoE will continue to keep dangling carrots out there for us to chase until something better comes along and I doubt that will be eq2 either.

RE: /Disagree with SOE
# Mar 24 2004 at 2:36 PM Rating: Decent
I have to disagree with the theory that SOE wants you to play for 40-50 hours a week. If anything, they'd ideally have as many subscribers as possible who play the LEAST amount of time so they would have to dedicate less bandwidth and processing power and manpower to the game. This would reduce costs and keep the same amount of revenue, thereby maximizing profits. No matter how much you play, 1 hour or a hundred hours a month, they still get the $13 you paid. If you had the internet way back when you could pay with it by hour or pay a monthly fee, you would better grasp this concept. If you intended to play this game casually, then it may or may not be worth your $13 to keep playing if you could be more entertained by something else for an equal or lesser price, but if you are hardcore and that $13 seems like you should be paying $50 for the entertainment you get out of it, then you can truly appreciate its worth. Also, I don't know what people are talking about when they say that the game is losing appeal and that making money has become harder for chars who dont have a beefy alt. I farmed spider silks and zombie skins for the first 16 levels of my character, and after that looted jewels from unrest skellies and sought mammoths, which almost always yield 18pp a pop after selling for about a minutes work. Sorry for the disjointed structure, but it came to me in that order, so I phrased it that way.

I am 100% behind what you say here. I was exploring Abysmal Sea and found the Fishing Tradeskill more or less by accident. After trying it and finding you could make just under 5gp per pound I decided to do some fishing. While doing this I increased not 1 but 3 of my tradeskills to very good or master level. Also I met and chatted with several people that were there doing the same thing I was.
I knew we were in TROUBLE with the prices the minute I heard another patch was coming out. But, like everyone else I did not know how much trouble we were in for.
Several of my guild mates wanted to know why I was fishing and YES, I told them. Where else could you make several 100pp in about 2 hours and not have to risk your death or rely on a group of people who you do not know and will probably never see again. I turned down several requests to do LDoN because of the money. Speaking of LDoN it has been NERFED as well, the money and the AUGS are not equal or even close to what they were when it first came out.
YES, I will freely admit I am a casual player, I am on EQ on the average of 10 hrs a week. I do realize that SOE wants us to be on more like 40-50hrs a week. Sorry but, I do have a life outside of EQ.
As far as quitting EQ in the near future I may when my subscription runs out UNLESS, something happens to improve what has been going on recently.

Amen to everything you just said brother, I couldn't have put it any better myself. Sure some people won't understand why everyone is getting upset over this, but most of the people who don't understand are either in uber guilds, people with endless hours to go farm, or classes such as enchanters who can make thousands of plat an hour just selling KEI.

For the rest of us though, the fish was a nice way to make some money. Sure we all knew it would probally get toned down, I said that the instant I sold my first fish but... damn. From 4-5gp per pound to 1 CP?!?! Even when made into new recipes those don't sell for much either, but the damn cups of sugar you need to make those recipes for baking still costs 10pp per stack.

Those of us though who work in real life/have kids/don't have the time to dedicate hours on top of hours every night to the game have little to no ways of making some extra plat. This was a convient and easy way to make some plat, and if nothing else they could've just made the fish sell for half of what they do now. But this is the thing that kills me. Don't think Sony didn't plan this and do it on purpose. Do you really think fish selling for tons of PP just happened to slip by the developer's noses? Hell no it didn't. Sony knows that the GoD expansion doesn't offer something for everyone, in fact most of the zones are only for time flagged guilds. That's why the fish sold for so much, they knew we'd find out how much they cost, tell all of our friends, and then everyone would want to buy GoD to make some money. There have been several patches since GoD came out, if the fish price was really an accident they'd have caught it long ago, there wern't 40+ people per server all fishing in Natimbi at once for nothing. So now that time passes and SoE figures they won't be selling much more copies of GoD it's time to hit the zone with the magic nerf wand and make sure that none of us "common folk" are able to compete with their hardcore players.

Don't get me wrong, SoE made a very very smart business decision. "Hey, I know a way to get the normal players to buy Gates... Listen up Charlie." ...Nothing against the players who play all the time, if that's what you guys want to do then good for you, but it just sucks that SoE doesn't pay more attention to the rest of their community. Last time I checked, we paid the same amount per month as everyone else.

WTF!? There was little enough point in tradeskilling ever since they made EVERYTHING sell back to merchants for less than you paid to make them, now they make fishing impractical, honestly, what is the point of looking for a good way to spend time OTHER than fighting endless battles? When you find it, they will just take it away again...
Glad they finally nerfed that friggin hammer though, made it WAY to easy to twink, gave richer (or dishonest) players a huge advantage early in the game over newcomers, who are a good part of the game, who else is going to buy banded armor and forged weapons? everyone else has enough to buy far better equipment.

Just curious, as several of my warriors guild mates noticed the same thing when using two handed weapons.

WTF is it with SOE... they add in a feature that makes people actually want to use trade skills, and then they hose it. Probably in the name of preventing abuse, but here's what SOE doesn't get: unless you put a limit on how many hours per day you can trade-skill, macro-users and pro plat farmers will always be orders of magnitude more profitable than the rest of us. So, don't hurt ALL OF US just because a few abusers exist out there. Find them, ban them or tweek it so that what THEY do doesn't work as well and move on.

Is there any GOOD reason to do trade-skills more than 5 hours per day? I know that kind of nerf would have left me a lot happier than the "oh, you can't BENEFIT from being a master [insert trade skill]!"

How hard would it be to keep a counter for every combine or time you cast your line and give the player a "your hands are tired" failure if they've crossed the number they could have done in 5 hours? I could probably go all day with such a limitation, since I still need to get drinks, go the to bathroom, type in various channels, get raw ingredients, etc. Only the exploiters are going to be hitting that limit.

Naw... that would have made the game fun for those of us that actually play it... nevermind.

Dunno about the macroing.

As to sitting there making a few hundred plat fishing while chatting with friends. Then turning around and sinking that cash into BUYING materials to improve my tradeskills.
This is what they hurt.
Adjusting the sell price by 50-75% would have been much more reasonable. It would take somebody like me a bit more time to gather working cash but not to a painful level.
It would on the other hand make fishing less attractive to the plat hounds.

Sitting there macroing your fishing button to make thousands of plat a day is not tradeskilling.

Doing it to make hundreds of plat a day isn't tradeskilling either, but at least it doesn't hose the economy for the rest of us. The number of people sitting there fishing on the shores of Natimbi was pretty much ridiculous, and it was only a matter of time until the vendor prices of those fish got changed.

Who knows, maybe now people will use those fish for actual food.

I agree that the ones that were using fishing for plat runs ruined it for all of us. I, for one, loved the idea of making good money on fish, but the main reason I did it was to build up my fishing skills. I think putting it down to coppers instead of plat was a little drastic though. Make it silver or gold and it would still allow us to make some money on the fish and still make it enjoyable to build up the fishing skill.

They adjusted those to a better lvl. Why should a lvl 1 char get a wep with that kind of proc? I personaly belive that proc should be equal to the level needed to get full benifits from it. If you can't get everything the weap offers stat wise how should you be able to control it? If enough people continue to complain about the proc "nerfs" SOE will just make alot more items NO DROP. I mean give them credit, I saw a lvl 1 cleric with the Orb of Forgetten Magic, the orcs in CB couldn't stand up to the proc. But it had to have been a 1 dmg wep, who uses a 1 dmg wep?

Well enough of my ranting, i'll go somewhere else and rant now.
And feel free to flame, as i know you will.
RE: Twas only a matter of time!
# Mar 10 2004 at 4:33 PM Rating: Decent
I agree, I think they need to spend some time and put recommended levels on almost every item, and make it so if not at the level you get less stats and no effect at all. Would be good for more items to have a required level as well. Something along the lines of requierd level 50 recommended level 65.

Also think they should put a tribute value on no drop items, nothing like watching a decent no drop item rot because no one is right class to use it or has better already. Atleast it could then be turned into useful effect for someone via tribute points.
RE: Twas only a matter of time!

actually it would've been full damage orb. Any weapon is still bugged to hit for full damage even if there is a recommended level. I know this because my rogue uses bile drenched main gauche and it is like recommended level 56. My rogue is 11 and hits for 26-30 constantly which he couldnt do if it was the 3-4 damage wep it says it is.

That will probably be fixed in the next couple patches as well though, so you will have a lowered damage weapon then. Til then make the most of it.

I wasn't looking to complain since I was lvl 1 im 42. 42 isn't too far below the lvl 50 they changed it to. My point was they moved it from lvl 1 proc to 35. That was fine by me. When I had the hammer before lvl 35 I was doing way too much damage with it, I freely admit. However at 42 in an LDON I can't even hold agro with it. Therefore, it doesn't appear to be that far out of whack from what i can be doing with other weapons of my lvl with the proc in effect.

That is just my two cp.
Thanks for listening and posting.
