Do you have any computer magazine cover CDs.
Or a friend might have some. Quite often there will be a copy of what you are after on them.
Do not throw them away either, you never know when you might need a file, again!!

Once again, another incident which involves PAYING and not RECIEVING.... I am a former EQ player who like most of you, had to buy a new system to play Luclin- but I can't play Luclin-yet. Seems alot of people are having this problem. It is the mysterious D3D8.DLL file. Where is it? Why was it not on the CD that cost me 30 bones? And why is this have to be MY setback after buying a new system just to hold Luclin? Nobody seems to have any quick solutions. If I could just find the file on the net, couldn't I throw it into the EQ folder and have it run good? If anyone knows the solution to the D3D8.DLL besides tearing all your hair out, cussing out the customer service line, clearing your savings account for a useless game, or stapling your head to the rear tire of the beater outback and having your friend slam the gas in reverse, you can email a polite letter to jcpdairy@topdog-is.com

Ok i have been surfing around on the net, trying this thing to make my direct3d work by disabling direct 3d then exiting it, then going back in and enabling and i run Everquest and it still doesn't work. I have tried so many fetching combinations and i can't seem to find something that works, when i look on the net with someone who has the exact same card, and it works for them! I have a Rage IIC AGP card. And my error is Running Direct3D test and getting error on step 5. I'll be greatful if anyone can help me :)

Last night while installing Luclin on my pii 450 with 384MB and a Tnt 16 it's my third pc, not upgraded), I ran into the Direct3d problem after installing directx 8.1.

I tried a lot of things, and then in desperation, clicked the enable / disable buttons of each option in Display.

Lo and behold, the second button down (direct3d) SAID enabled but when I clicked to toggle it ENABLED. I ran diag...all good.

I think the toggle either doesn't work or is labeled enabled for both options (enabled or disabled).

Try it. Crazier things have happened.

Thank you thank you - It worked for me on my fairly new 1.7GHz system with all the bells and whistles.

Just click the enable/disable button a few times and hey presto - magic.

What a blinder.

Subject was: Why won't Direct3D work. Getting GetDeviceCaps error on Directx version whatever. I have an NVIDIA graphics card (just out of interest)

are you serious? to play EQ anymore you have to have a luclin-compatible video card, regardless if you play the expansion or not? thats bull sh*t, i quit EQ over a year ago, and was going to start playing again, so i went to install kunark/velious off of my CDs, and got a sh*tload of errors about dlls and 3d devices after patching. so i came here to see if i could find anything out, and thats what i read. my computer is good enough to run EQ, its the same one i played on before. but since they came out with the expansion they are trying to force me to upgrade, thats a load. f*ck verant, no wonder why i quit playing EQ, they do whatever they want and dont give a sh*t about the players, they figure they got you hooked so they tell you to jump and you ask "how high". well sorry, they can suck me. guess i wont be playing afterall.

It's important that you all realize(as I did), what this game can do to your mental state. I started playing this six months ago, and everything has changed for me since. But I mean this not in a good way! Until now I'v been afraid to even talk about it for fear of the consequences to the Everquest community. But I know now that NO MATTER WHAT I must inform all of you that playing EQ has taken it's toll on my mind and I fear I am going insane. Yes, really insane; I mean raving mad; it was just two weeks ago that I had to be dragged away(and was almost arrested) after I tried to cast a spell of fire(and gasoline) in my local K-mart. And what happened last week I won't even say.
I'm asking you all with greatest sincerity: Don't end up like me! Think of your future! Stop playing Everquest now!

I just installed eq:ruins of kunark for the first time, it did a little patching before it would let me get into the game...after the patching was complete i clicked on the eq icon. then an error came up: d3d8.dll file missing, so i downloaded it from somewher. plus another dll file it was missing. now its coming up with: The d3d8.dll file is linked to missing export: GDI32.dll
if anyone knows what to do please help me!!!! i want to get into everquest real bad!!!

I've only porblems w/ installing this game. First I needed DirectX8 or higher. So I installed DirectX8.1. Now I want to upgrade my ATI 3D RAGE PRO for DirectX8.1. I downloaded all the possible drivers for my ATI 3D RAGE PRO. Nothing worked out. They keep saying that it is impossible to unpack. By the way I don't know where my ATI card is installed because there's not a ATI file(e.g. c:\ATI). Then I tried dxdiag. My Direct3D works on DirectX7 but NOT on DirectX8. They keep saying: Failure at step 5(GetDeviceCaps):- - (3D is not available). That's why Everquest is not working. If you know how to fix this, please help me.

Your ATI is probably on your motherboard, like mine is. That is why you can't find a seperate card.

Most likely u will need to buy a new graphics card just to make it easir, The best card to get for a bargain price is the geforce 4 mx 400 which ships with all the other geforce4 cards u can read the review on the geforce 4 mx cards they beat the ati radeon 7500 in almost every benchmark along with the geforce 4 ti kills the radeon 8500 by almost 35-75fps depending on the benchmarks and condition

Whenever I go try to go on a everquest server my screen goes whtie then at the character selection screen the graphics are all all screwed up. Anyone know how to fix this?

Make sure that you are running 16 bit color (EQ cant even run on anything higher that 16 bit,such as if you have it set on 32 bit graphics are ***** up)and make sure that you antialiasing is all the way down,this is sure to work...as it did for me. GOOD LUCK!

Alas, I also have the same problem as many others. The evil little box telling me there is no 3d. I have tried all the so called fixes on the internet and none have worked. I have 2 computers at my home, and my older P1 is not getting the no 3d message and my newer computer is. I just want people to know that there are lots of people having this problem. If I stumble across the answer I will post more. Good luck all with directx.

I don't think it is fair to us that have been playing EQ, since it came out on shelf a few years back, to change the requirements on computer so much that oldtimers have to buy new a computer to get to play game anymore. I was one of the 1st to buy the game & now I have to try & upgrade or replace computer to play it, that is not fair to me or anyone else like me. You should care about the old customers a little more than that. I want to be able to play the new version too. I have a Compaq Pesario 5152 & can't play game anymore because it is too difficuct to move even, let alone Zone or look at spells. I am very disappointed in Sony for not thinking of this problem before they upgraded the game. I know there are others out ther with the same problems as I have. I hope Sony will think of us the next time it goes to upgrade & put out game expantion that we can't even use.

Bye bye everyone! Me and my ATI-rage card, 233 MH pentium II chip, and 128 MB RAM have been left behind while everyone else plows ahead with the game.
I Only get to play every weekend due to my work schedule, so it really isn't worth upgrading my entire system, but I was still paying the same amount that the 24/7 51st level addicts pay.
I, like many of the others who have posted, am extremely disappointed and a little infuriated at Sony for this lack of foresight. I didn't need better graphics; Just access to the server and something more than a white screen to look at as I travelled across Norrath.
This falls in line with the rest of the Customer Service experiences I have had, (such as having my account killed because my 9 year old daughter snuck on and used my account; "Password security is your responsibility" Yeah, whatever. Aside from Me, the only others to use my computer were my wife and daughter. I trusted that she wouldn't have the gall to break rules. So much for understanding.)
I bought a new account and change my password frequently now, only to have this upgrade occur 3 months later. I've ranted enough.

Turning off the emotes (the gestures your character makes when he bows or salutes or waves etc) was instrumental in speeding up my frame rate. I noticed that topic wasnt covered anywhere on here and felt that it was important to mention. All the emotes are overrated anyway and once you've seen a few, they loose their charm. Hopes this helps some of U out.

40 Rainja here from Australia. I got a 4mb Voodoo 1 Video Card, 64 Mb SDRAM with a AMD K6 II 350 and I am playing more than some of you poor people with trumped up pc's. Sure I have to pull the detail level down to barely rock bottom but hey! I am still gaining xp without killing me or my group. Only real problem I have is lag, but what would you expect when you play on the Bertox server when you are loc'd in Australia? Admittedly I am going to pay a crapload of money to get a better pc just to play the latest online RPG's, that will mean an AMD Athlon 1.6Ghz proc., 512 Mb RAM and a 64 Mb Geforce 2, but if you love the games like I do, it's worth the time it takes to save up enough money and auction your old pc on ebay just to afford the Luclin expansion. To all of the unfortunate people who cannot afford the luxury of a new PC, I am truly sorry. Who knows, I will prolly still get major lag, but at least the 10 fps will look prettier!!!

i'm running on a 1984 Amiga sprint, a 12mghz demon with 2mb of ram and a 30mb hard drive. AND it runs awsome, even luclin, with all the goodies turned up. go buy an amiga, it was made for this game. cheerio

Just a newsflash. I run with 512 megs of RAM (I have over 600 megs, but Verant suggests if you use Windows 98, to turn it DOWN (LOL!) to 512 (or risk crashing). I have a 32 meg Nvidia graphics card. An Athlon 700mhz computer. DirectX 8.1. A lightning-fast cable connection.

And much of Luclin is still in super slow motion.

So by all means upgrade UPGRADE!

But I'm feeling sorry for people who are investing literally hundreds of dollars into their computers for ONE game. Just keep in mind it might behave EXACTLY the same as it does on your current system.

As for all those babies out there I am so sorry that you all DONT have the money to get a new Video card. I am low on cash but if I really want to play EQ Ill go out and get a stupid card. Cost me $89.00 for the card #45.00 to have it installed
I have 256 Ram plays kind a slow but its works.
Since I only have a 350Mhz computer I didnt load sol becouse its to slow.

well, i didnt install the luclin exp yet. i have 128 ram, getting more sunday. my problem is when i click to my persona screen or when looting my screen flashes and then stops when i hit done, or it goes all black. i hit f 10 and i correct it. but everytime i go to that screen it %$#@@ flashes or goes black. why!!!!!! i have 16mb video card, 128 ram. what the hell do i need to do. i also went ld last night like 4 times in a half hour, that has never happened to me before.
logged in about 10 minutes ago and my screen went black, i camped and even my character screen went black, after that i couldnt log back on to eq. it said try again shortly. i couldnt even get into the everquest.com website. plz tell me what to do with this stupid persona screen blacking out and flashing problem.
