Alganon Q&A Talks About Altitis, Grinding Rep

The Alganon team has posted its newest Community Roundtable segment, which answers questions submitted by fans. This Q&A focuses on the fact that Alganon "is a living game" designed to "expand and grow."

In response to a question regarding the pain of leveling alts, the team said it hopes that the dual role system, which allows characters to perform two different combat roles, will elminate the need to roll an alt. That said, the team also plans to continue expanding content for all levels, so alts will have new content to explore.

There will be bind on pickup items, but there will also be a token system in place so players can acquire loot through different means. You will have to raise your reputation with various factions, but there will be numerous ways to accomplish this task.

You can read the full Q&A below.

Community Roundtable No. 15

Topics for this week's community Q&A include: character advancement, binding of items to a character, exotic and dangerous gameplay environments, and factions.

We've collected all the previous roundtables and added them to our Articles section. Check the forums to participate in the next round! We select questions directly from those posted by community members.

Q. In other MMOs it is pretty much a pain to level Alt's as you have to do the same boring quests over and over again. How will Alganon handle this "pain"?

A. We are hoping that the dual role system greatly eliminates the need to roll an alternate character without eliminating the fun of playing a second character. Since your main character can perform two different combat roles, it is much less likely that you will be forced to roll an alt in order to find a place in the game.

For those players who enjoy playing alts, they will be excited to know that Alganon is a living game, and is designed to keep expanding at all levels, not just at the endgame.

Q. Could you give us a little detail on how binding of items will work? In a previous roundtable you stated that crafting recipes won't be bind on pickup (huzzah!), but what about boss drops, quest reward weapons, general higher quality items, etc.?

A. Many objects in the game will be bind on pickup (BoP), as this allows us to award these items only to players who actually took part in the event.

However, one of our core design philosophies is to provide alternative means of advancement - we word it as "A player shouldn't be forced to do something they hate in order to do something they love." This philosophy has led us to a design that utilizes a token system to allow players to earn the same quality of loot by many different means. Even crafting recipes fall under this area - some crafting recipes may be BoP, but there will be more ways to obtain the recipe than just by adventuring.

Q. Will there be playable dangerous environment areas like under water, vacuum, in a volcano, where just being there would kill you if not for some spell, device, or ability?

A. The launch content for Alganon is meant to be a basic introduction to the world that allows us to get players into the game, and allows them to communicate to us (through their actions), what elements of the game draws their attention most. If we see players drawn towards more hostile environmental factors, we can then work more dangerous environments into the design.

Alganon was designed to expand and grow - ideas such of these could very likely be a later part of the game. However, they will not be available at launch.

Q. Will there be differing factions that a character will have to improve standing with, in order to obtain certain items (crafting recipes, special armor & weapons, etc)?

A. There are numerous social groups in Alganon, such as the Peacemantle and the HUD, who will not give their prized possessions away to just anyone. Players will need to build faction with these groups in order to obtain the specialized items they offer.

However, like all of Alganon, this element of the game is affected by our design philosophy of alternate advancement. Often, there will be multiple ways to gain faction with these groups, as well as multiple ways to gain equivalent items.
