Sony Online Entertainment's games have been offline for almost two weeks following a recent attack by hackers, and we're all anxiously awaiting any news regarding the status of the company's services. While it doesn't give an estimated date for when the games will be live, SOE's latest update outlines its "Make Good" program and unveils its complimentary Debix “AllClear ID PLUS” identity theft protection program in the United States.

As previously announced, all impacted players will receive 30 days of game time added to the end of the current billing cycle in addition to one day for each day the system is down. Players will also receive the following items once services resume:

DC Universe Online: Batman and Two-Face Inspired Masks and 30 Marks of Distinction
Free Realms: Free daily items (7 to collect)
Clone Wars Adventures: Count Dooku v2 Outfit
EverQuest: A series of events, including Double XP, Double Rare Mob Spawns and Double Faction Gains
EverQuest II and EverQuest II Extended: A series of events, including Double XP, Double Guild XP, Loot Bonanza, and City Festivals
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes: A series of Double XP events
Star Wars Galaxies: Bounty Hunter Statue, a miniature model of Boba Fett's ship, the Slave I
Magic: The Gathering - Tactics: Four of each of these spells: "Ivory Mask", "Duress" and "Angelheart Vial", plus 500 Station Cash
PoxNora: Limited edition Carrionling, Welcome Back 5K Gold Award Tournaments and two Draft Tournaments, plus 500 Station Cash

In addition to the above items, lifetime subscribers will receive 20,000 coins for Free Realms, 7,500 Galactic Credits for Clone Wars Adventures and 10 Marks of Distinction for DC Universe Online. Station Access subscribers will also receive 500 Station Cash.

Sony's Identify Protection Offer

Has Sony sent any details on the identity protection insurance for 1 year that has been discussed and posted on the EQ client login screen news? I've received zero emails from Sony regarding this protection offer for any of my SOE accounts.

Regarding subscriptions and "free" 30 day extensions, be aware that even long term subscriptions now auto-renew. There was a time when any subscription over six months required players to manually renew. I've been a long term renewal subscriber for years, having being formally addicted in 1999 and making a decision each year that I'd likely still be playing for another one (or two) years with my accounts. The cost savings were significant over time.

Reviewing my account info a few months ago I noted they were all set to auto-renew for 1 year upon expiration. I didn't want that so cancelled all and re-subscribed for a monthly subscription (which won't take effect until the current subs run out this fall). I will re-evaluate at that time. So just a warning to folks with long term subscriptions who may NOT want them renewed for another long term autmoatically.

OK, I understand that what happened, happened. I can't change history. I've been playing EQ from 1999 to date. I have 5 accounts but I consider myself a very casual player. Saying that, I need my gaming fix. I've tried WOW and it's OK for my playing style but not really what I'm looking for.

I've started playing Rift and it's looking great! I miss my EQ but with this game, a little less and less each day. Maybe after 28 days of no EQ, I'll have my EQ habit kicked. We'll see Smiley: nod

Disclaimer: This is not an apologist post for Sony.

I was thinking though.

Game is 12+ years old.

Trillions of bits of information stored server side for every single 'toon currently existing, active or not.

Every item you ever destroyed, sold, bought,traded or stored.
Every key/flag your 'toon ever acquired.
Every faction hit, good or bad.
Quests you have done or partially done.
Every AA ever earned and what it permits a "toon" to do.
Plus, I don't know what all else (My "nerd" quotient never exceeded 45% much to my embarrassment),but think about it a second.

Anyone who actually thinks Sony (SoE in particular) could possibly manage to have ALL the trillions and trillions and trillions of bits of information accurately reloaded on new servers in 30 days or less has GOT to be smokin' some good stuff! That includes the poor "lackeys" that Sony has posting "updates" on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

How much info do they have to reload?

Every time they do a major patch they take the game down. Reloading the game is not a problem. It is the network security they are working on.

when the game goes down they are only making changes to existing information , not transferring all data from server to server

try fulling up your 1 tera ( 1000gig ) HD and transferring it to another one in a timely manner.

Then do it once for every zone in EQ
Then repeat process for every server
now a few more times for instanced zones
now a few more times for characters.

That what Adani is driving at.

so whats the latest update? im not a facebook fan will never touch the site. is soe back online? why did duesex get theres back up in few hours? soe site says same thing for 2 days now. wifey honing her kos for me! hurry please soe

if you're KoS.. then here's a few suggestions:

dress up as a mob and let her beat on your for a while

make up a quest(maybe leave a trail of her favourite chocolates to start), make sure it will keep her frazzled, yearning for more, and occupied for hours, but a glow of satisfaction at the end(if i have to explain you're a bad hubby period!)

take over the current daily boring tasks.. you know the farming type ones we all do in our daily games, just use other inventive names like dishes, and laundry for them...

dress up as a mob and let her beat on you a while.. oh wait already said that one...

i'm sure others could make a few suggestions

Clearly, we're in a whole new world of security breach threat and the immediate burden companies will have to incur to stand up to it.

EQ gripe: I am max on aa's, levels and have all the factions I need. -as do so many that play. What good is a double-xp, double-faction period for us that have no need?

I'm in the same boat. I was really hoping for station cash to spend on my house, but I'll be happy just to have my game back. And happy for my friends that can use the xp.

Mazeron, you are right. It's the enjoyment of playing. Most of my fun these days comes from helping people and enjoying their excitement when they get something cool. So double xp and spawns is fun still, but something enjoyable for my own toon would be really nice too.

Two great links Adani. What concerns me most from the letter is:

â€¢ adding additional automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks;

â€¢ enhanced levels of data protection and encryption, as well as additional penetration and vulnerability testing;

â€¢ enhanced capabilities to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns;

â€¢ implementation of additional firewalls;

â€¢ expediting a planned move of the system to a new data center in a different location with enhanced security; and

This from a company that has trouble patching a 12 year old game lol.

I can easily see a week or three of "The system is coming down for a security patch" once they go live with this.

servers arnt up yet i just tried to log in. it took a minute to tell me they werent upinstead of just saying disconnected. but they are NOT up yet as of 301 pm PC time but i am remotly happy with the make good plan. i like double rare spawns.

Lol. Stop playing SoE games, every SOE game I've played - it seems that the vast majority of customers are super unhappy with SOE, compared to other major game companies - they seem to be the most hated by their own subscribers.

Clearly there is something to be learned from this: Playing an SoE game ultimately will make you unhappy. Just stop.
