Producer's Letter - May 19, 2006

Here is a producer's letter, as seen on EQLive, regarding the upcoming progression server: ================================================================= Hello Everybody, The big news these days seems to be the progression server officially named The Combine. First off, I am overwhelmed by the interest and although I know it won't satisfy everyone's desires it does look like the idea is appealing to a large number of people. It is great to see the excitement out there and not just with our active players but hearing a lot of people talking about reforming old guilds and coming back to the game. The response has also, quite honestly, got us a bit worried. We are working on taking a few steps to make sure we can handle the possible load. Primarily we are going to cap the maximum online population. We consider this a much better solution than the inevitable zone crashes that would begin when we start to hit higher loads. The last thing we want to do is limit the amount of players that can participate but we have to make sure we maintain a good play experience as well. Over the past few years the servers have stayed very stable so they can handle some pretty big populations so the server will still be plenty full. We understand that there are many players that have become attached to their character name. In an effort to allow people to reserve their name before the launch of the server we are going to set up a limited version that will allow you to log on and create a character. You will not be able to enter the game world itself but you will be able to pre-create your character and reserve your name. Having the name you want is even more important when you consider that this server will be freshly tracking all item discoveries and leaderboards on our EQPlayers service. Who will be first to discover the highly sought after Fire Beetle Eye!? There will be a lot more to talk about as we get into our beta and closer to the launch of The Combine server. Chris "Raghnell" Lena EQ Producer

Hopefully, with the new server. There will be no bazaar, like in the old EQ the common's was great. Everyone traded with everyone ... ONE on ONE. This will save space on server no Bazaar where everone leaves there player online to sell thier items.

Personally I want the older game and expansions to last as long as possible and am going to be doing everything in my power to slow down overall progression. The sooner the newer expansions get released then the sooner all of the old problems are going to resurface and then it'll just be a big mess just like the real game is now. I can't speak for everyone but one of the reasons I want to go to this server is so I can just take my time and not worry about "grinding" or anything like that. I think Sony should be looking at ways to slow down the progression part of the server as much as possible like putting all the old penalties for death back in and setting the boats back up to limit travel. Maybe even locking levels at first would be good idea. Like make the original level cap 10 for the first month and then slowly increasing it to allow everyone to keep up. So far the biggest threats to the new server are the two boxers (and three and four and five and six and seven boxers) and the guilds that are threatening to unlock it all as fast as possible which would ruin everything. Finally if they're that worried about overpopulation I guess we need 2 combine servers huh? I'm not too worried though because if they do this right and make the game as hard as it was in the beginning alot of people that are expecting to fly through the whole game in a week are going to end up quiting pretty fast

If you think the biggest threat to the server are 2-boxers, you sadly have a limited field of vision. If this is because you fear not being able to get a group if everybody is two-boxing?
Guilds threatening to unlock it as fast as possible? Whats wrong with a group of friends wanting to be the first to take down Vox or Nagafen?
Why do you say you are going to do everything in your power to slow down overall progression? Does that mean that you are going to intentionally start trains in Guk, Permafrost, and Sol A/B for the purpose of derailing ppl's attempts to conduct raids there? That doesnt sound like someone who wants to just enjoy the old days, and to take their time and not worry about grinding. If you play that way, it makes sense to me that you would be getting less and less group invites as people wouldnt want you around. On Seventh Hammer there was a guy that was weird like that. Linvarwen. Five years ago I knew him and still wont group with him today.

If you dont want to go to Kunark then just dont go there. There are plenty of 'legacy' zones you can exp in. Kedge for example is usually a vacant zone and still is plenty of fun to swim around in and see the sights. If you dont want to do something then just dont do it. Have fun playing EQ the way you want to and dont begrudge others for choosing to exp or grind or play two characters in a different zone than you do. This is a fun game and this new server is a fun way of allowing newer and veteran ppl the opportunity of reliving the old days.
Adding one amazingly huge quest of unlocking the zones is the keystone of it.

haha , ya thats the way they kept the little man down. train and cause mahem so you guys never would make it to the raid zones. I guess you guys never realized, those trouble makers were there intentionally, so the end guilds didn't have you guys in the way.
Raids

The cap will probably be the biggest problem, once we get to this point, that when it gets to be evening in the U.S. time zones and everyone comes out for raids, people may experience diffuculty logging on because of the big population increase during the raiding hours. Not only because of raids, but also, the evening is when most people get home from work and log on even if it is just to experience. I see logging on in the evening as a potential problem.

I tried playing eq in 2003 but didn't have the pc for it so couldn't actually play it until last august and I found out why this game was affectionately referred to as 'evercrack'. Over 1000 hours later i'm down with the sickness of it all and really hoped they would do something like this for the vets to relive their glory days, and us newer folks to see what made this world so special, so i'm psyched. And FINALLY I don't have to hear the vets go on about the stupid BOATS, they're BAAACK!
won't be the same

I am a skeptic myself. I don't think your gonna be able to re-create the "magic" that was the original release. Most everyone who joins this server is gonna be a seasoned veteran player with know how, internet walk-throughs, internet guides, maps and most importantly previous experience. If you are truly a newb (like we all were once), then this will be fun, otherwise I think everyone will just be jonessing for better gear, newer experiences and what not. my 2cp

Just wait

Just wait a couple of weeks... when the blush wears off, and the "thrill" of no PoK, no Bazaar, and etc. wears on, you'll have plenty of space.

Not that I'm a cynic.....

I agree the afk/not logging off will create some issues. I have also heard that some of the uber guilds are looking at this server as a way to go head to head to see who can unlock stuff the fastest. Should be interesting, but since we are all starting on a even field should be fun, no level 70 to pl and bazaar to buy items in.

Trades will be important....to mention can I get a sow, and a gate. WOW no PoK books. Everyone will be boxing druids lol.

See you all there.

OK. So, if there's going to be a character cap, how about this? Anybody going AFK gets kicked off after, say, 48 hours. Let the people interested in playing actually be able to. I know the Oldies know all the tricks, and will ***** things up in favor of their toons. This server is what we Newbies have been waiting for. So, if you're there just to get around the rules, please stay on the old servers. If you're there to re-live memories and have fun, Welcome.

Other games use a 30 minute AFK timer. Hasn't hurt those games. If you are just sitting around, log out. It saves your buff timers...
CAP
# May 20 2006 at 3:55 PM Rating: Good
I think this new server is a fantastic idea even though it does have its drawbacks. While capping the server is a must, you will find it will discourage many people from playing. I speak from a personal view. I, as I previously stated, am a supporter of The Combine Server but I can honestly say that I probably wont play on it if I find myself getting locked out due to capacity issues.

I may be mistaken, but if you apply a population cap, there's the possibility of many people just going 'afk' and not leaving the server at all just so they will always be able to play when they wish...anyway, that's how I understand how it's going to end up.

For once, I am glad I live in a non-US timezone. Population cap sounds like some folks will be unhappy.

Well, with it being school / university holidays when the server goes live, you really think that not being in the US is going to make such a huge difference? Let's wait and see...
