EVE Guide Ship Class Hierarchy

Ship Class Hierarchy

So, you want to know what the biggest, baddest ship in Eve is? The short answer is "it depends". The purpose of this guide isn't to give you a clear path from start to finish to become an all powerful podpilot. It is to help new players understand the differences between the ship types. Discussion of Tech2 ships is not in the scope of this guide as it would only make the hierarchy confusing and T2 ships aren't something that new players need to worry about for a while.

Frigates

The first ship you ever use is a Frigate. They don't have a lot of fitting slots. They don't have a lot of shields and armor either. But, they are the fastest and nimblest ship class. Frigates fit small sized weapons.

Destoyers

Not necessarily the next ship class you'll use, but the next in the list is the Destroyer. These sub-class of frigates have many more high slots for fitting more guns. Their drawback is that they have a bigger signature radius. This makes them much easier to hit, although they don't have more armor and shields than a frigate. Their main function is frigate killing, and it is a bit of a specialized role. Destroyers fit small sized weapons.

Cruisers

Most players skip the destroyer and move into a Cruiser. They are midway between the frigate and a battleship. Cruisers can fit medium sized weapons. They're quite helpful for Level 2 agent missions as they can take and repair damage much better than a frigate. Just realize that with their increased signature radius they'll be hit a lot more often too.

Battlecruisers

Battlecruisers are kind of like Destroyers. They're half way between two classes. Battlecruisers have an increased signature radius again, closer to that of a Battleship. They also have more high slots used for fitting weapons. Battlecruisers have something else going for them as well, they are able to equip Gang Warfare Modules. The only other ships that are able to are capital ships.

Battleships

Last, but not least in this guide is the Battleship. This is the largest class of ship that most players will use. Anything larger cannot use jump gates. Battleships fit large weapon types. They have many more slots for fitting modules of all kinds. They also have much more armor and shields than any of the previous classes. Battleships are slow to turn, slow to move and slow to warp. You will find them very useful for Level 3 and 4 missions.
