SOE Downtime - May 2, 2011

All Sony Online Entertainment services, games, forums and web sites are currently offline. This downtime relates to the recent Playstation Network intrusion. No ETA is available at this time. Here is the notice from Station.com:

Dear valued SOE Customers,

We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

UPDATE: A press release was posted on SOE's web site around 3:40pm PDT.

I am not upset with Sony...I am ticked that some fookin hackers have done this. I care not if it was for fun or profit, a thief is a thief is a thief! No point in raking Sony over the coals over this..every bank, cc company, online store is as vulnerable as the next to this sort of attack.
I figured it out!

Now that osama is sleeping with the fishes, this sort of stuff will be over fast! GO SEALS! God Bless America!

A status update from SOE would be appreciated, as would an estimate of the total downtime.

That seems to be information about the Sony attack from 2 weeks ago, not what's going on now.

This is all related to the hack from 2 weeks ago. Whatever caused them to bring everything down is a direct result of their investigation into that issue.

Whilst I share the frustration of many, I don't think Sony would risk losing so much of its customer base by a negligent shut down. I am sure the reason is necessary and that they are working hard to get back on line. I often think that those who are most vocal are better off just stopping their account as I am sure Sony would listen harder if, rather than just moan, you stopped paying for something that you don't like? Or is your financial mis-management Sony's fault as well?

I can agree with that. They need to do whatever it takes to fix whatever the problem is and it will be down as long as it's down. What I really want is some information about what's going on, how long it will take and if any of my personal data was compromised (and if so, what are they doing about it.)

SOE does have a history, though, of dumping something on us and then going silent. That cannot happen here. Even if they are not ready to release any information, it's better for them to say that than to say nothing at all.

Let them do their job & fix it..jeese
# May 02 2011 at 9:38 AM Rating: Good
Just let them get on with their job, seriously even if its down for days which yes is inconvenient, so what..if it means its getting sorted then thats a good thing & its not their fault this has happened, even the best of security can get hacked, we dont know the ins & outs of it, im sure they will let us know in due time, for now stop moaning at them and think about the jerk or jerks who did this to us all, not Sony.
Besides id rather they didnt rush the job just so we can play our games..besides im sure if it was our personal data/cards in crisis they would certainly be contacting people to stop their cards etc..until you recieve such a message id hold off freaking out so much & im sure we will get some kind of XP bonus again soon :)

My turn to have a bleat,

I have been very patient - I have been playing this since close to Day One. Over those years I have thoroughly enjoyed all that SOE have provided - I have looked forward to every expansion eagerly, but now I feel so annoyed when I log on to have my peak playing time regularly interrupted on a Tuesday, Thursday and now even a Friday evening. Yes, there have been some short and some very long Hot fixes included, which I appreciate would be necessary to periodically update and ensure the integrity of the game. However, additional to the above are all these extra downtimes which are absolutely driving me mad. I pay my subscription promptly every 3 months and I have now got to the point where I have to question the value for money that I am receiving. I am dismayed to find myself at the point where I am thinking about cancelling my subs and losing my huge investment - to go off and try to find something to replace this.
I am not sure which way to jump - I've heard all the stories about WoW, from guildies who let their accounts lapse - only to return. I've never been slightly interested in playing anything else, until now. (The original 6 WoW discs, that were gifted to me are still on the shelf, where I threw them.) Hmm nearly time to dust them off, I think. I guess one has to cut their losses somehow. Good Luck SOE - I hope you finally sort out all the dramas you are experiencing. Once you have done that and can give me some sort of guarantee that I will have LONG periods of uninterrupted game play - send me an email, tempting me with a huge discount and maybe I can return.
IT'S NEARLY TIME TO MOVE ON.

Well, clearly you should move on. Good luck finding another game that's going to give you so much to do as EQ2. There's no other company out there that does what SOE does for it's customers. The downtime is to protect us, I would be more upset if they kept everything up at this point. You might find instant gratification in some of the other games but long term fun and a constant flow of things to do...I think not.

Well, someone at SoE has some smarts. They took down the link to their Free Realms trailer that appeared on the page explaining that SoE has been hacked. It did seem in poor taste to suggest we go look at another Sony product while trying to get information about Everquest.

i love how everyone is pissed at sony. lets face it if @#$%^^$#5 did not do something illegal then sony would not have to shut down today. if eq is down for a day wow like any other patch day( we should be used to that by now) if they are down for a week or month and do nothing to comp us then we can *****, but rem its not just sony's fault. its the @#^%^*$%%^# that hack fualt too. how often does windows come out with new patch to keep ppl out. 2x a week how would u like an eq patch that often? i think sony is doing an ok job so far and will wait till its 'fixed' before i complain about what could be a 12 hour down time.

Lets put it this way....

Sony Playstation Networks got hacked like this and went down on April 20th. My calendar says it is May 2nd. PSN is still down and part of it will be rolled back online "later this week" according to Sony and that was all before this latest attack hit SOE....

My guess is SOE will be down for much more than just a day

Maybe you haven't been playing much (or trying to play much, lately) but this isn't some new phenomenon that people are complaining about. In fact, we just had a big outage a few days ago......
Energy might be better spent letting Sony know that a multi-billion dollar company DOES have the resources and WILL be expected to use them to prevent inconveniences to their paying customers rather than chastising working Joes for wanting to get what they pay for =P

I actually wouldnt mind a 2 times a week security patch. if it keeps my things safe then they can go for it i will applaud them.

I have no problem with waiting for patches if it protects me, And If it stops this from happening then its a goood thing!

Sony is working on a solution to the problem. We just need to be patient. They don't want this to happen anymore than we do. For those inquiring about Rift, it's awesome! And regarding Sony, a double XP week would be lovely =)

this is kinda crappy.. I thought as i was climbing out of bed this a.m I would be able to sit on my bum drink a coffee watch the rain in a warm dry house and play some eq before heading into work. Nope not happening. I just came back to eq and now I'm rethinking my choice of letting my 360 membership expire. I wanted to say much more but after reading the other posts... most have said it all and i really dont feel the need to retype the same statements. Sony needs to wake up alot of us have had problems in the past regarding our accounts, payments, sc and its getting so old.

I just started playing the game 5 days ago when the PSN went down thats why i decided to play EQ......So far i liek the game its fun But geeesh I wanna play im off work and i look forward to games on my computer come on Sony
Speculation
# May 02 2011 at 8:29 AM Rating: Decent
Yup, this is not a good situation.. a few days ago I read in eq2 forums. that Sony and or SOE offshore something to the effect of their payment processor... not sure if that is true... then I read they laid off 205 people. mind you that 205 employees do not count contractors or temps nor interns. Seemed shortly thereafter the Sony sites and PS networks went down. Here is my point, trying to save money and reduce cost, may have had a negative impact on their customer base, as well as The bottum line. According to financial news outlets this intrusion could cost Sony / SOE little over a $1 billion and cost banks around $300 million. The way they handling this with their customers.. will cost them Alot more.

My second point is hey guys look Internally. You either handed our Information to another company because it was cheaper.. a really upset exemployee aware of the systems planted something or had access to disrupted areas. or some outside hacker group/person is sticking their keyboards where they dont belong.
rift
