SOE Downtime - May 2, 2011

All Sony Online Entertainment services, games, forums and web sites are currently offline. This downtime relates to the recent Playstation Network intrusion. No ETA is available at this time. Here is the notice from Station.com:

Dear valued SOE Customers,

We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

UPDATE: A press release was posted on SOE's web site around 3:40pm PDT.

This is bs!!!!! Big freaking company thinks they own us because we love the game they put out, and that they can just do this crap and not keep us informed... I am freaking sick of it this game is what I have to look forward to when my daughter goes down for a nap!!!!! After working and gardening and chasing a 3 year old around all day, its what my bf and I do instead of watching TV at night!!!! Well you know what I am sick of waiting by the dam computer to see if the servers are up! They never keep us informed!!!! I'm going to let my bf switch back to freaking WOW Took me a freaking YEAR to convince him to try eq2!!!!!!! Im going back to Crocheting and my long lost XBOX360!!!!!!!!!!! I want a 10x xp week if they are gunna get me back.....

It's bad enough that they've hacked into the PSN and, worse yet, opensourced the code that may ultimately destroy any trust in PSN and make it a place where cheaters and hackers abound. Sony will experience significant revenue damage when users leave in droves because their competitive gaming experience has been destroyed by the proliferation of cheats and cheaters (similar to what happened to Diablo).

But what's worse is that Sony didn't bother to encrypt all user and private information "at rest" as the PCI/DSS standard clearly calls for them to do. If all the information had been encrypted in place (i.e. in databases, files, anywhere it's persisted) then the hackers would not have gotten anything usable.

I know I probably will be play when it comes back up too..... but I am upset.
:( your right! This is just so stressful.. identity theft... and I just paid $75 for a game that might be down for a month..... I have been playing this game for 5 years and I would think that they would have some respect for us!
Services rendered for payment collected?
# May 02 2011 at 8:12 AM Rating: Decent
Not that $15 is a huge amount of money, but I have a family of 7 which makes leisure time and, especially, leisure money scarce in my household. I cannot afford for Sony to be collecting my money and maybe, eventually getting around to rendering to me the service I have paid for. You wouldn't be OK with the guy at McDonalds sliding 2/3 of a Big Mac across the counter to you 90 minutes after you ordered, would you? Now imagine him asking you to pay the full price for it as well. Somewhere along the line, principle has been thrown to the wind.

Shame on you SOE for giving us nothing but generic rhetoric as explanations. I've been feeding you money for over 10 years now =( Shame on me, I guess......

It's now just past 7am PDT and I haven't seen any updates yet. I'm guessing the SOE folks are just heading into work so hopefully something will crop up soon.

I'll update here and the news post if anything new comes up.

I'd suggest checking out our Rift forums, some good information on how it compares to other games there: http://rift.zam.com/forum.html?forum=222

We wanted to update you on the status of our examination of the SOE system intrusion we announced last week. We have been conducting a thorough investigation and, to the best of our knowledge, no customer personal information got out to any unauthorized person or persons. We are continuing that investigation and monitoring the situation carefully; should the situation change, we will -- of course – promptly notify you.

Either their definition of promptly varies greatly from mine OR your data is safe with nothing to worry about and they're typing up some code to patch a previously indentified hole that hasn't been discovered as of yet... being too busy typing code to type an update to us. Option 3: They're lying, your data is screwed, and they're taking steps on covering their butts in liability lawsuits (even if you are forbidden from suing), legal lawsuits, and how to white wash this from their hands without actually caring about their customers. Given SOE's past behaviour, which of these is most plausible? (Rhetorical question for you to consider to yourselves; Sony's CS doesn't suck as much as some people believe, though it's not the best, granted).
this sucks

SOE is probably going to be down for an extended period of time (days/weeks) I am DEEPLY concerned about identity theft.... Not only that but with all the down time recently, they need to credit people for lack of access. Cant charge me a monthly fee for access if I cant gain access

First it was PSN, which forced me to get a new debit card just in case. And now it is this, after I just bought station cash for the double cash day. If I find one cent missing I will end up deleting the game from my system.

They have had over a week and a half to discover loopholes and you would think Sony would check all of their properties. I think Sony takes us for granted and thinks we will let things slide as long as our games come back.

In this case I tend to think otherwise...

Unfortunately these days corporations are more concerned with damage control and their image with the stockholder than with actually solving problems.
SoE's not the only one with problems

SoE isn't the only company suffering severe problems with internal security. Late last autumn one of my friends I played WoW with passed away suddenly. The man was religious about updating his anti-virus software and being very cautious with his account data; in March his (permanently closed) account got hacked. Initially Blizzard denied anything was wrong then suddenly switched tactics and claimed he must have done something to pick up spyware which led to the hack. Though the threat of having the entire population of a major guild spread the word and then cancel their accounts finally got an actual person to respond and take (rather limited) action to lock out the account, Blizzard still refuses to admit responsibility for the deactivated account of a dead man being used for days without responding. Either Blizzard is having similar issues as Sony with espionage-level hacking, or someone on the inside is running a scam to sell customer data.

well everyone should get time credited for however long its down. But this is what gets me, If they new about the "holes" and they just let EQ double xp/double station cash how many put their credit card numbers in for station cash. Why did they let the whole event continue without warning their customers.

You wrote week instead of year. Probably a typo on your part.

Dear Sony,

This is unacceptable. How are you going to redress this serious problem? Please supply an answer soon.

Your friend,

Baeddon

What a bad year for Sony.

If this has anything to do with the PSN breach then SoE and Sony have a lot more explaining to do. A bow and apology will simply not do if more information was stolen than we were previously led to believe.

"The question is--are they down closing up security holes or does this mean EQ2 and other games got hacked like PSN and our info has been stolen?

I hope SoE lets us know which ASAP"

i very much agree

as an aside .... we should also bear in mind that at least some of our personal data is in perpetual circulation around the world at the best of times - like it or not, law or no law - if its online, by the very nature of the medium, its out there ... somewhere ... we don't want it online, we go back from the 21st century

Sony really need to remove digit to clear this up matter PRONTO

I just wish they would keep us customers informed by using the network status pages when doing something.

It took sometime before we knew anything, yet many of us spent a great deal of time trying to log in.

Even general updates they could post it a few days before doing it so we can make other arrangements.

Very poor management I think!

trying to do something about it. Nothing is safe any more. Internet, your bank, your home, your car, nothing. It's your risk to put your info out there. Companies do the best they can to protect it. Security is only as good as the person writing the program. There is always someone else out there trying to see if they can break into something. Whether it's your account or your house. Someone will always see if they can do just to see if they can...

Have patience and a little faith that Sony will do what they need to do. They've always done good by me, even if it was an answer I didn't want to hear. Just one old woman's opinion.

Safe journey...

Based on their response to the PSN break in, how slow they were to admit anything and notify us, the fact that they still don't know if credit card information was taken (from the PSN break in) and the PSN is still down after almost 2 weeks, I'm not sure Sony is equipped to handle this.
Security fix or Security breach?

What's going on?
# May 02 2011 at 5:59 AM Rating: Decent

This is rather sudden and cryptic. Does this mean there was ongoing intrusions, or is this from the original? Is my personal data safe? If this was from the original, why didn't they find out until now? If this is ongoing, why didn't they drastically improve security based on the previous?

Lots of questions. I hope they start coming with answers.
